Inside Sarah Michelle Gellar's grueling diet and fitness regime after stunning fans on the red carpet

Daily Mail20 hours ago
It's been over 25 years since I Know What You Did Last Summer was released - and Sarah Michelle Gellar is looking better than ever.
The 47-year-old actress wowed fans while attending the premiere of the reboot of the famous slasher film, looking toned and fresh faced as she posed on the red carpet.
The Hollywood star looked glamorous as she stepped out with husband Freddie Prinze Jr., showing off her toned physique in a strapless Oscar de la Renta butterfly-embroidered mini dress.
The screen star added orange pumps and a matching boxy clutch purse that picked up the orange hue in her fancy frock.
Geller and Prinze, 49, met on the set of 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer. They tied the knot with in 2002, and share daughter Charlotte, 14, and son Rocky, 12.
Gellar, whose character was killed off in the original 90s flick, did not return for the new film.
But the actress, who also starred as the titular role on the supernatural drama series Buffy the Vampire Slayer which aired from 1997 until 2003, is set to reprise her role in the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
Below, FEMAIL dives into Gellar's fitness routine and diet as she continues to dazzle with her age-defying looks.
Sarah Michelle Gellar regularly works out at the gym
Gellar does not shy away from a good sweat session at the gym, often seen working out with weights.
In an interview with Parade, she shared recent changes to her exercise routine, explaining she has added lifting to her routine - something she usually avoided.
'You play these characters and you can't be shredded, and you have to look a certain way. As you get older, you realize, as a female, you have to focus on bone density,' she told the publication.
The actress added that she works with a trainer 'once or twice a week' for real strength training, and also love Pilates.
In February, celebrity trainer Brach Gould, who is a strength and conditioning coach, shared a video, showing off one of Gellar's grueling workouts.
Her session consisted of:
Half Kneeling High Cable Pulls: Works the shoulders and back
Single Arm Kettle Bell Farmers Walks with High Knee: Improves balance, core, and posture
Single Arm Dumbbell Lunges: Works the legs while improving balance
Stability Ball Planks: Engages core muscles for sexy abs and stability
Plate Weighed Side Steps: Improves hip mobility
Side-to-side Medicine Ball Slams: Engages all the important muscles
Assault Bike to end
The actress added that she works with a trainer 'once or twice a week' for real strength training, and also love Pilates
'I've been working with Sarah for over six months now and all I can say is how impressive her progress has been!' the personal trainer captioned a short clip shared online.
He added: 'She's become stronger, fitter and more mobile by just sticking to a program and working on the fundamentals.'
Gellar has also said in the past she doesn't let a trip away from home get in the way of getting her workout in.
'When I'm travelling, I always pack my resistance bands,' she told Women's Health.
'There's so much you can do with them,' she gushed. 'I had my trainer make a hotel exercise program for me on days when I just can't make it out to the gym.'
She added: 'My bands are key, but I'll often use hotel hand towels as sliders, too.'
The actress makes her own food to take with her on set
Gellar has previously stated she enjoys making her own food, and follows a balanced meal plan.
The mom-of-two told Women's Health she always makes sure to look at food 'holistically.'
'It's not just about the food I ate today, but the food I ate this week or this month. Because as you get older, you realize it's about the whole picture,' she shared.
Gellar is known for bringing her own food most places she goes, including to set and while traveling.
'I bring my own food to set a lot of the time so I can eat the food I want to eat when I need it, versus when they break for lunch,' she explained. 'We don't get the ability to be like, "Oh I'm hungry now, let me eat."
The actress added that she's a 'dedicated meal planner.'
'Everyone at work makes fun of me because I'm always walking around with a lunch bag,' she laughed. 'Even on the airplane yesterday, everyone was laughing at me because I had to get extra ice for my lunchbox.'
The Buffy actress added she 'always' makes sure to eat a balanced meal.
'You need your protein, your carbohydrates. You need to figure out what gives you energy and what works for you,' she continued. 'I bring my lunchbox on the airplane so I can eat when I need to.'
Gellar is also a big fan of meal prepping, and says she uses the app My Fitness Pal to help her tick all of her nutrition goals, sharing a regular 'day on her plate' to the food-tracking apps blog.
A typical breakfast is usually overnight oats with almond milk, chia seeds, blueberries, and almonds, and will male a salad, wrap, a Buddha bowl with brown rice, edamame, snap peas, chicken breast, and a soy-vinegar dressing for lunch.

As a fitness writer I think Jessica Biel's workout is great – but it comes with a caveat

You might be familiar with the phrase 'comparison is the thief of joy'. This expression is particularly applicable to celebrity workouts. Yes, we can use the exercise regimes of our favourite actors and influencers as inspiration for our own efforts to stay in shape. But the two should never be put side by side, as Jessica Biel has highlighted in a recent Instagram post. After earning an avalanche of admiring comments for her strong physique in new Prime Video series The Better Sister, the 43-year-old pointed out that the 'peak shape' she was in while filming 'is not maintainable unless you are living the strictest, most rigid lifestyle with your nutrition and with your fitness, which I cannot do'. The caveat with celebrity workouts As a fitness writer, Biel's transparency is refreshing to see. Actors achieving an optimised physique for a role has become ever-more commonplace in the post-Avengers age, but it's important for viewers to note that recreating what they see on screen is rarely a viable option. Case in point: Zac Efron has been open about the impacts of his training for Iron Claw – 'Your life goes out the window during prep'. His intense efforts and diuretic use before filming Baywatch also led him to 'fall into a pretty bad depression' and 'develop insomnia', he tells Men's Health. Meanwhile, Chris Hemsworth's long-time trainer Luke Zocchi previously told me the pair approach top-off scenes in films like preparing for a bodybuilding show. They will know the exact date for filming months in advance, then fine-tune many factors to optimise his look for those few seconds of screen time. As a fitness fan, he's in great shape year round, but even Hemsworth doesn't look like Thor for all 12 months of the year. In summary, not even the actors themselves can maintain their on-screen physique for the long haul, so viewers shouldn't expect to either. After shining a spotlight on this on via Instagram, Biel goes on to share a workout from 'her plan to get a little bit back towards that [The Better Sister] shape' – and it's solid stuff for celebrities and the rest of us alike. Jessica Biel's workout Exercise Sets Reps Rest Dumbbell hip thrust 4 10 60 seconds after each set Dumbbell Romanian deadlift 4 10 60 seconds after each set Tempo Swiss ball hamstring curl (three second negative, or lowering phase) 3 10-12 60 seconds after each set Kettlebell goblet step-through lunge 3 6-8 each side 60 seconds after each set Resistance band kickback 2 10-12 each side 60 seconds after each set Kettlebell dead bug 2 12 60 seconds after each set This is a strength training workout. The targeted muscles are overcoming resistance – whether that's provided by a dumbbell, kettlebell, resistance band or your own bodyweight – to perform a movement. In the case of this particular session, the main working muscles are those of the glutes (backside), quads (front of the thigh), hamstrings (back of the thigh) and core (a collection of mid-body muscles responsible for supporting the spine, aiding balance and many more functions). The target number of sets and reps per exercise are geared towards building and maintaining muscle. If you want to try this workout for yourself, Biel has helpfully demonstrated the exercises in the video below. You can also substitute the Swiss ball hamstring curls for prone resistance band hamstring curls, and swap the kettlebell for dumbbells during the lunges and dead bugs, if you only have a couple of dumbbells and bands handy. Benefits of Jessica Biel's workout The body adheres to the SAID principle, which stands for specific adaptations to imposed demands. As a result, if we apply a resistance that challenges us during each of these exercises, and progress this resistance over time as our fitness improves, the body will build muscle and become stronger. Put simply, it's adapting to get better at the specific thing we keep asking it to do. It's not just the muscles that benefit either; strength training will bolster your bones, tendons, ligaments and more. This reduces your risk of injury and improves physical capacity, often increasing quality of life as a result. It can also boost balance, coordination and mobility by working your joints through a wide range of motion under load – if you can comfortably sit in a squat and lift objects overhead, chances are your hips, knees and shoulders are in pretty good nick. Another perk Biel highlights is the benefits of strength training as you grow older. 'My body's not 20 years old anymore, so I am adjusting my workout to what I need to do,' she says. The video then cuts to the actor in what appears to be the splits. 'You've got to build muscle, so that is a key part of my particular routine – [that] and a ton of flexibility,' she continues. '…Let's get older and stronger together.' As she alludes to here, strength training can counter a condition called sarcopenia: the age-related loss of strength and muscle. This process can start as early as your 30s, with an article from Harvard Health Publishing reporting that people can lose 'as much as three to five per cent [of muscle] per decade'. 'As you move through midlife and into your 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond, age-related muscle and strength loss – sarcopenia and dynapenia – become more significant concerns,' Ollie Thompson, an experienced personal trainer specialising in longevity, tells me. 'However, if you've built greater reserves earlier in life, you'll be in a stronger position to maintain muscle mass and physical function as you age. 'For someone who has dabbled in fitness during their younger years but hasn't prioritised staying fit through midlife, I recommend a minimum effective dose of two full-body resistance training sessions per week, along with approximately 150 minutes of cardiovascular exercise,' he continues. 'This approach helps slow muscle loss, maintain strength and support overall cardiovascular health.'

Gwyneth Paltrow slammed as 'insufferable' after admission about how she educated Brad Pitt during their relationship

Gwyneth Paltrow has been slated for her 'classist' admission about how she would educate Brad Pitt during their relationship. The 52-year-old actress and Goop founder dated the F1: The Movie actor, 61, from 1994 until they called off their engagement in 1997. In the new biography about her life, Gwyneth: The Biography by Amy Odell, one chapter reveals how Gwyneth started to question her relationship with Brad during the filming of the Jane Austen adaptation Emma in 1996. According to People magazine, she expressed her doubts to one crew member and admitted that she had a crush on Hugh Grant instead. As per the publication, 'Brad and I had very different upbringings,' she told an interviewer. 'So when we go to restaurants and order caviar, I have to say to Brad, 'This is beluga and this is osetra.'' Social media users on Reddit have hit out at her remarks about her time with Brad, with one branding her as 'insufferable.' 'Classic classist snob with no taste, no humor,' another said. 'Please educate us more on the differences between caviar and keep preaching about how to not eat.' A third agreed and added: 'She is exhausting.' But others weren't totally put off as one admitted: 'I'd actually read this book lol.' Nepo baby Gwyneth is the daughter of movie producer Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner. Gwyneth and Brad never publicly explained the exact reason for their 1997 breakup. However, Odell's sources recalled rumors that it might have been linked to Gwyneth's alleged fling with her Sliding Doors co-star John Hannah. Reflecting on the split in a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, she admitted: 'I wasn't ready, and he was too good for me.' Following her relationship with Brad, she went on to date Ben Affleck. She would eventually go on to wed Coldplay front man, Chris Martin, whom she married in 2003. The pair, who split in 2016, are parents to daughter, Apple, born in May 2004, and a son, Moses, born in April 2006. In March, Gwyneth spoke highly of her romance with Brad, whom she worked with on the film Seven. 'He's a very intriguing character,' she said, before comparing him to a royal. 'It's like having dated, I don't know, Prince William or something. That's always going to come up.' Brad is now dating jewelry executive Ines de Ramon after divorcing Angelina Jolie, while Gwyneth is married to producer Brad Falchuk.
