Teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi's astonishing batting skills have captured the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who on Sunday hailed the 'son of Bihar' for working immensely hard on his craft which helped him play fearless cricket on the big stage.
Modi mentioned Vaibhav's batting exploits in his video address during the inauguration of the Khelo India Youth Games in Bihar.
The 14-year-old Suryavanshi, who hails from Bihar's Samastipur, became a toast of cricketing world when he hit a stunning 35-ball hundred for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans recently in the IPL.
'I have seen in the IPL, the son of Bihar, Vaibhav Suryavanshi's spectacular performance. At such a young age, Vaibhav has set such a great record. There is a lot of hard work behind Vaibhav's performance," Modi said in his address.
'To bring his talent to the forefront, he has played many matches at different levels. The more you play, the more you will shine. Competing in matches and competitions as much as possible is very important. The NDA government has always given it the highest priority in its policies.
'The government's focus is on giving our athletes the opportunity to play new sports. That is why the Khelo India Youth Games included Gatka, Kho-kho, Malkhambh and Yogasana. In recent days, our athletes have performed very well in many new sports like Wushu, Lawn Balls, Roller Skating."
Modi said sports holds a significant place in his government's policy making.
'There is a new national education policy, in which we have made sports a part of mainstream education. The aim of this policy is to create excellent sports professionals along with good players in the country.
'My young friends, we know that sportsmanship plays a very important role in every aspect of life. We learn team spirit in the field of sports. We learn to move forward together," he said.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a meeting of the BJP-led NDA's parliamentary party meeting. The NDA meeting comes just days before the filing of nominations for the Vice-President's election on August 7. After the Monsoon Session ends on August 21, the election will be held on September 9. The meeting comes in the middle of a session that has been all but a washout so far, except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, due to a united Opposition's ceaseless protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar by the Election Commission. Modi is expected to speak on a host of current issues as the Opposition has been raising the heat over the poll body's alleged partisan conduct favouring the government, and the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The meeting also comes amid rumours that the Centre may reinstate Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. Tuesday will mark six years since the abrogation of Article 370 with the J&K Congress observing it as a 'black day' and sitting on a dharna to press for the restoration of statehood. Meanwhile, the government is expected to push through some legislative business on Tuesday, amid the Opposition's continuing protests, said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. In the Lok Sabha, at least four Bills will be considered for passage – The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024; The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024; The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025; and The National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025. In the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to move a resolution for the continuation of President's Rule in Manipur for another six months with effect on August 13. The Lok Sabha has already passed this resolution. The Upper House will also consider for passage The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025. The mortal remains of veteran tribal leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) patriarch Shibu Soren reached state capital Ranchi on Monday evening, with thousands of people waiting outside the airport and lining the streets to pay their final respects to the former CM, affectionately known as Dishom Guru. Soren, 81, who was undergoing treatment at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for over a month for kidney-related problems, passed away on Monday morning. Party workers led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy are expected to participate in a three-day protest beginning on Tuesday. Article 370 abrogation's anniversary today: Amid buzz, Omar trusts his ‘gut feeling', Mehbooba wary
A day before the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 that granted Jammu and Kashmir's special Constitutional status, the Union Territory's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said 'nothing bad will happen' on Tuesday. His comments came amid a flurry of high-level meetings in Delhi that set the rumour mills abuzz. 'I've heard every possible permutation & combination about what to expect in J&K tomorrow, so let me stick my neck out and say nothing will happen tomorrow — fortunately nothing bad will happen but unfortunately nothing positive will happen either. I'm still optimistic about something positive for J&K in this monsoon session of Parliament but not tomorrow,' Omar posted on X. The CM said this was his 'gut feeling'. 'And no, I haven't had any meetings or conversations with people in Delhi. This is just a gut feeling. Let's see this time tomorrow,' he added. Differing with Omar, former CM and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said she expects 'something worse will happen'. 'I have my apprehensions, you know, something like what they did in 2019. They broke up, dismembered the state, they broke it into parts, you know, dispossessed us. Their main target was Muslims, especially Kashmiris. So, I feel something worse may be in the offing to disempower us further, dismember us,' she told The Indian Express when asked if she expects Jammu Kashmir to get back its statehood. A day after both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah met President Droupadi Murmu separately, Shah on Monday met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Intelligence Bureau director Tapan Deka, and Home Secretary Govind Mohan in his office in Parliament House. The speculation gained momentum recently after the government suspended the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage on August 1, citing 'maintenance works of urgent nature' on both routes to the cave shrine in south Kashmir because of heavy rains. On Tuesday, Modi is expected to address the NDA parliamentary party meeting. This meeting of the ruling alliance's MPs comes a couple of days before the window to nominate a candidate for the Vice-Presidential election opens. The NDA candidate's election is a near certainty due to the alliance's majority in the electoral last day to file the nomination is August 21, which is also when the Monsoon Session concludes. The PM is expected to counter the Opposition on a host of issues that it has been raising, including the Election Commission's (EC) alleged partisan role and the ongoing electoral roll verification in Bihar.
