Team Abu Dhabi gears up to defend UIM F2 World Championship title in Lithuania
ABU DHABI (WAM)Team Abu Dhabi will take part in the second round of the UIM F2 World Championship hosted by the city of Klaipėda, Lithuania, on July 18 and 19. The event will see fierce competition among an elite lineup of the world's top powerboat racers.The team will be represented in this round by boat No. 1, driven by reigning world champion Rashed Al Qemzi, alongside boat No. 35, piloted by Mansoor Al Mansoori. Both will be aiming to defend the championship title secured last season and continue Team Abu Dhabi's remarkable record in the competition.Defending champion Rashed Al Qemzi and teammate Mansoor Al Mansoori are preparing for this critical round in Lithuania, especially after the setbacks they faced in the opening round of the season held in Brindisi, Italy, last June. Al Qemzi suffered a technical failure that forced him out of contention, while Al Mansoori's boat capsized in the final laps of the race.Team Abu Dhabi is determined to bounce back strongly and secure a positive result in Lithuania to reestablish themselves in the title race for the 2025 season, which includes four more rounds—continuing in Italy and concluding with the final two rounds in Portugal this October.The opening round of the championship saw Britain's Matthew Palfreyman clinch victory, with France's Peter Morin finishing second and Sweden's Wilmer Wiberg in third.Al Qemzi remains one of the top contenders for this year's crown, boasting an impressive record of five world titles, making him the most decorated and favoured driver among the competitors.Head of the Team Abu Dhabi delegation, Nasser Al Dhaheri, emphasised the importance of the upcoming round as a pivotal stage in their quest to retain the world title.
'We are fully aware of the level of competition in a championship of this magnitude and history. Our goal is to maintain the title and perform in a way that honours the UAE's name,' he said.

UAE: Abu Dhabi to host Open Masters Games in February; residents' fees at Dh275
UAE residents aged 30 and above can now sign up for the Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026, the first event of its kind in the Middle East, taking place from February 6 to February 16. The event features 33 various sports and is expected to gather more than 25,000 participants from over 100 nationalities. Competitions will be hosted across 18 major venues, including Zayed Sports City, Hudayriyat Island, Al Ain Adventure, ADNEC, and Abu Dhabi Falconers Club. Registration is now open via the Open Masters Games official website, with entry fees set at Dh275 for UAE residents and Dh550 for international athletes. Participants aged 25 years old and above can join in swimming, while rugby is only open to those aged 27+. Special rates of Dh100 are available for People of Determination and senior citizens. Registration will close on December 31. Spots per sport category are limited, organisers clarified. A celebration of sport 'We're always on the lookout for new experiences for our team,' said Perry Gardiner, co-founder of Calibre Masters swimming club. 'With swimmers from across the UAE and visitors from abroad, it's shaping up to be a fun and competitive event.' The Calibre Masters Swimming Club, based in Dubai, offers swimming classes for adults and has built a community of competitive swimmers. 'We'd love to see as many of our swimmers as possible enjoying the experience, swimming fast and making the most of it,' Gardiner added. 'To have the chance to do all of that on such a big stage is a real privilege.' Andy Fordham, Project Director at Zayed Sports City, who will compete in the cycling events of the games, told Khaleej Times: 'With 33 sports and more than 20,000 participants, I expect a true celebration of sport, diversity, and resilience across generations.' The New Zealand director saw the games happening in his home country in 2017 and is now looking forward to participating and competing. 'I happened to be in my home country, New Zealand, during the 2017 Games held in Auckland. Although I wasn't a participant back then, I vividly remember the energy of it. Years later, I finally get to experience it as an athlete,' said Fordham. 'As for preparations, I've been balancing my training around work, focusing on both endurance riding and building up stamina for race day.' For those willing to contribute to organising the games, volunteer applications are open via the Emirates Foundation, with opportunities in logistics, athlete support, and hospitality. Roles are available for students, professionals, and community volunteers. 'Volunteering in the Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026 is more than just a contribution of time — it is a message of passion and belonging,' said Ahmed Taleb Al Shamsi, CEO of Emirates Foundation. UAE Jiu Jitsu community mourns loss of revered coach to cancer
The UAE Jiu Jitsu community mourned the untimely death of British athlete Oliver Geddes. The grappler died on Wednesday after a battle with cancer. 'We are devastated,' said Asya Pamukcu, who worked extensively with Oliver at the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP) events across the world. 'He was the head of European referees and coordinated all the referees for AJP events in many countries. He was very professional and an amazing human being.' One of UK's most prolific Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) competitors, 41-year-old Oliver received his fourth-degree black belt from decorated martial artist Roger Gracie just two weeks ago. He has had podium finishes at some of the most prestigious BJJ competitions across the world and has been an active competitor, coach and referee. Asya added that Oliver was active in every field of Jiu Jitsu. 'He was a coach, he was a referee, he was organising events, and he was competing in different federations,' she said. 'His impact was felt in every aspect of BJJ and the sport meant everything to him.' AJP posted on their social media account about Oliver, describing him as a 'true martial arts gentleman' and as someone who worked with 'unwavering integrity, fairness, and passion' for the sport. 'His dedication to the sport and the community left a mark far beyond the arena. His presence, his voice, and his spirit will never be forgotten,' the heartfelt note concluded. 'Oliver came to the UAE very often and was very pleased to work for an organisation that tried to and were able to put Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on the mat with professional tournaments,' she said. 'He always enjoyed going to Abu Dhabi and working the events there. Back in his younger days, he would compete at the main event and later he would coordinate it.' She added that for the last few years, his main focus was coaching his students at his London gym. 'His commitment to his students and the number of details he was able to give made him so loved by his students,' she said. 'He loved spending time on the mat and contributing to everyone's journey. The overwhelming responses that we have had since he got sick shows how much everyone loves his character and the way he treats people.' Battle with cancer It was in May that Oliver took to social media to announce that he had been diagnosed with cancer and that it was likely to be terminal. 'I have maybe days, maybe weeks to live,' he wrote in his note. 'I'm going to try chemo, but my liver is basically nonfunctional at the moment and chemo with a non-functioning liver could kill me. On Monday, Nadine posted on social media that the chemotherapy had failed and that Oliver had been moved to a hospice. Two days later, she shared the news about his death.
