Indonesia's poverty rate hits 20-year low amid reforms, but rural gap persists, says stats agency
According to the Central Statistics Agency, there were roughly 23.85 million Indonesians living in poverty as of March this year — representing 8.47 per cent of the country's total population of 280 million.
BPS categorises people living off Rp 609,160 a month, about US$37 (RM156), as poor.
'The poverty line figure for 2025 is the lowest for the past two decades,' the agency's senior official, Ateng Hartono, told a press conference.
However, the agency noted the significant gap between big cities and rural areas, with villages still seeing a higher poverty rate.

Jakarta last week struck a trade deal with the United States that will see Indonesian goods hit with a 19 per cent tariff — lower than the threatened rate of 32 per cent.
According to Washington, nearly all US goods will be able to enter Indonesia tariff-free.
Indonesia's Coordinating Minister of Economics Airlangga Hartarto said earlier this week that if Washington had insisted on the 32 per cent tariff, around one million Indonesians could lose their jobs and the poverty rate could increase. — AFP

US tariff rate has no impact on nation's commodities market, says Johari
Plantation and commodities minister Johari Ghani said the tariff rate for commodities is still fair, even if it remains at 19%. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The 19% tariff imposed by the US on Malaysian goods will not affect the competitiveness of Malaysia's commodities in the global market, says plantation and commodities minister Johari Ghani. He said this was because the tariff remains competitive compared with other Asean nations, including Indonesia, which also faces the same tariff rate, Bernama reported. 'We're almost on par with the lowest rates in Asean. For example, Indonesia is the world's top producer of palm oil, and we're number two. 'It is also subject to the 19% rate. So for us, 19% is fair. It's not a problem,' he was quoted as saying, after attending the Pasir Gudang Umno delegates' meeting today. Yesterday, the US announced the imposition of a 19% reciprocal tariff on imports from Malaysia, effective Aug 8, a reduction from the previously proposed 25%. In response, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said Malaysia will advocate for 0% tariffs on commodities such as cocoa, rubber and palm oil, similar to the 0% rate enjoyed by the semiconductor and pharmaceutical sectors.

13MP to strengthen Perlis, Kedah as major cross-border trade hubs
KANGAR: The 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13) is expected to reinforce Perlis and Kedah's position as major industrial and logistics hubs linking cross-border trade between Malaysia and Thailand. Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) chief executive Datuk Mohamad Haris Kader Sultan said the logistics infrastructure projects announced under 13MP are essential to improving efficiency, reducing business operating costs and attracting more investment in export-oriented manufacturing within the Northern Region. "The Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) welcomes MP13's focus on logistics infrastructure development at the Perlis Inland Port (PIP) and the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah," he said in a statement to Bernama today. Mohamad Haris said this focus aligns with MP13's goal of strengthening the northern logistics corridor under the border development initiative through the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle, as well as boosting bilateral trade, particularly in high-technology products. He said that NCER is currently developing external infrastructure to support the PIP project, including the construction of the Bonded Road and the Railway Spurline and viaduct, under Packages 1 and 2, respectively. "The construction of Package 1, spanning 6.5km, has been fully completed, while Package 2 is 93.6 percent finished," he said. He said the PIP's location next to the Chuping Valley Industrial Area (CVIA) in Padang Besar would create strong industrial-logistics synergies. "NCIA will continue working with the state government and relevant agencies to attract more high-quality investments to CVIA, in line with MP13's goal of balancing regional economic growth and strengthening rural development," he said. Several infrastructure projects to strengthen cross-border connectivity and trade, including upgrades to the PIP and ICQS complex in Bukit Kayu Hitam, will proceed under MP13, which was unveiled yesterday by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. – Bernama

Sabah on right track to be leading regional MICE destination, says Liew
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is on the right track to become a leading destination for the Meeting, Incentive Travel, Convention & Exhibition (MICE) industry following aggressive measures undertaken by the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), says Datuk Seri Christina Liew ( pic ). The state Tourism, Culture and Environment said her ministry fully supported SICC organised events that helped drive domestic tourism, empower local entrepreneurs and elevate Sabah's profile in the regional economic landscape. She said this after being briefed by SICC chief executive officer Datuk Dr Rosmawati Lasuki on the SICC's BIGSABAH Sale 2025 event being held from Oct 31-Nov 2, this year. Liew said that Sabah through SICC is strengthening regional ties ahead of the event with expanded international participation. "I understand that the event will feature 500 booths, up from 300 in 2024, and is expected to attract 50,000 visitors," Liew said Liew observed that the BIGSABAH Sale 2025 aims to further strengthen Sabah's positioning as the gateway to East Asean and the Asia Pacific region. Towards this end, for the first time, a business-to-business (B2B) component will also be introduced for participants to create meaningful trade connections and unlock regional opportunities, she added. Rosmawati said the focus was on the 80 million population of the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area) region. "Sabah can serve as a platform for these countries and other regions to promote their products and services. "In this respect, we are stimulating growing international interest by extending invitations to other countries, including China, Singapore, and Taiwan, to take part in this year's event. "Thailand has confirmed participation with 20 booths," she said. Rosmawati said they conducted promotional visits to Brunei and Indonesia, along with outreach efforts across Penang, Kedah, Perlis, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur, to build regional participation and connect businesses to Sabah's growing marketplace. The BIGSABAH Sale will be themed under Gourmet & Home Living and Decor as well as Fashion & Lifestyle (Level 4), which will showcase culture, commerce, cuisine, fashion, and collaboration, Rosmawati added.
