Maresca looks at ease before the final

BBC News10 hours ago
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was so relaxed at the end of his press conference before the Club World Cup final that he ended it by speaking French.Already fluent in English, Spanish and - of course - his first language Italian, he tried to talk French. It was near perfect from Maresca but he ended his sentence laughing and speaking English. It was a confident performance in front of the world's media where he was also asked about the sale of Noni Madueke's departure to Arsenal, Moises Caicedo's fitness and the quality of PSG, who he labelled the "best in the world."The mood in the camp looks genuinely positive as Maresca has afforded players time off in the knowledge that they have extended their season due to this newly expanded summer tournament. That extends to directors who feel that this campaign is beginning to show the world that Chelsea should be regarded as smartly run - for all their innovations on extended long contracts - now the younger players are settling in.This game is now receiving global media attention now in New York and New Jersey with 100s of media in attendance. That will, of course, not mean anything when the match kicks off and everyone at Chelsea faces a challenge against a team that has destroyed both Real Madrid and Inter Milan in recent months.

White Sox great Konerko gets gift from Pope Leo XIV in honor of 2005 title

White Sox great Paul Konerko got a present from one No 14 to another in honor of the 20th anniversary of the 2005 World Series championship run – a jersey signed by noted Chicago fan Pope Leo XIV. Cardinal Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, presented Konerko a jersey with the new pontiff's signature on the back during a ceremony prior to the game against the Cleveland Guardians. It had the six-time All-Star's last name and 'Pope Leo' above the No 14. Robert Prevost became the first pope from the US in the history of the Catholic Church when he was elected on 8 May. The Chicago-born missionary, who took the name Leo XIV, is a White Sox fan. Prevost attended the 2005 World Series opener against Houston in Chicago. He watched from Section 140, Row 19, Seat 2 as the White Sox beat the Astros 5-3 on the way to a four-game sweep and their first title since 1917. In May, the team unveiled a graphic installation near the seat paying tribute to Pope Leo and that moment. The pillar artwork features a waving Pope Leo XIV, along with a picture from the TV broadcast of the future pope sitting with good friend Ed Schmit and his grandson, Eddie. Members of the 2005 team are in Chicago this weekend to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the championship run. The White Sox debuted uniform patches honoring late closer Bobby Jenks, who died last week in Portugal, where he was being treated for stomach cancer. On Friday, the team unveiled a statue of former ace Mark Buehrle.

EXCLUSIVE Travis Kelce strikes fan with wayward golf shot as boozy round with brother Jason takes chaotic turn at star-studded tournament

On the banks of Lake Tahoe, Nevada, the fairways of Edgewood Tahoe South golf club presented a scene of serenity. That was until the Kelce brothers took to the course. Jason and Travis Kelce returned to the sun-soaked holes of the Stateline golf course for Saturday's second round of the American Century Championship - a celebrity golf tournament that attracts some of the biggest A-Listers across sport and entertainment. While there was no Taylor Swift to be seen, the NFL brothers' SWAT officers were once again in tow. But perhaps the security would have been better utilized to protect the swarms of spectators from the Kelces, not the other way round. One spectator found himself in Travis's firing line - albeit through no fault of his own. After a day of chugging beers, the Kansas City Chiefs star struck a man on the back of the neck with an errant shot. The injured fan managed to laugh the incident off as the tight end signed an autograph and posed for a photo in compensation. 'I think so,' he answered, when Travis checked if he was okay. The fan may have escaped unscathed but it wasn't the first time either Kelce had flirted with disaster. To say their tournament descended into chaos would be an understatement. Playing alongside Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, the trio shotgunned beers, received ice cream deliveries and shook it off throughout their round - which almost ended in disaster. Football's most famous brothers have soaked up the attention in Tahoe all week, patiently signing autographs and taking photos with fans even during their rounds. 'I gotta figure out a way not to lose to my brother,' Travis quipped, while performing his autograph duties. Yet, for some spectators the siblings may have come a little too close for comfort. Both Kelces narrowly escaped leaving fans bloodied when they fired errant shots into the clamoring crowds on Saturday. Earlier in his round, Travis, sporting a pink polo from Tiger Woods' Sun Day Red apparel line, took a drastic detour on the 15th when he found the cart path. 'You guys signed a waiver right,' he asked the lurking spectators - hopefully in jest. At the next, his game unraveled further. The three-time Super Bowl winner fired his tee shot way left of the fairway, leaving his ball nestled up against the base of a tree. Someone in the crowd informed that the strike had actually hit someone. 'Oh s*** I did,' Travis responded when he was told the same. Two holes later he did it again. Meanwhile, Jason, sporting his signature straw hat, also took the scenic route around Edgewood, frequently missing the target. Also on the 15th, the Philadelphia Eagles legend hooked his second shot into the crowd, only to swing it back into the crowd on his rescue attempt. Three holes later, a cop car almost fell victim to the retired center's errant game. Jason, once again, failed to find the fairway with his ball coming to rest just behind the police vehicle. While their playing partner Mayfield avoided the same disaster as the Kelce brothers, the same couldn't be said for his scorecard. The signal caller was an accomplice in their antics, with the trio sinking more beers than putts. After beating the heat with a cocktail earlier in the round, Mayfield found himself embroiled in a beer chugging contest with a fan. Like the tournament, he lost that too. Yet that didn't dampen their spirits. They frolicked around the golf course, launching balls into the crowd and drop kicking them with Jason and Mayfield even practicing a snap or too. The Swifties who lined the fairways waiting, hoping, praying to catch a glimpse of Travis's pop sensation girlfriend Swift may have had their hopes dashed but the Grammy Award winner was there in spirit. The songstress's hit 'Shake It Off' belted out across the 17th to which Travis did just that. The three-time Super Bowl winner shimmied and shook his way down the hole as the pop anthem blared out. Their erratic play and frat bro antics were highly unsurprising given the wild bet they cooked up with each other on the eve of the tournament. Jason high-fives some young fans as he walks around the course in South Lake Tahoe Some time between wowing the crowds with their karaoke duet Thursday night and teeing off for Friday's opening round, the Kelces got to plotting. Jason revealed to Access Hollywood before their first round that they would be downing beers if they struggled on the greens. He said: 'Travis and I always have the side bets going for sure. 'I think right now, the bet today we talked about last night is every three putt, you got a shotgun a beer. 'So once you miss that first one, if you're left with a four or five footer, it's gonna be a little nerve wracking standing over that thing.' Despite being a fierce competitor during his NFL career, Jason also explained that he was just there 'for the vibes'. 'That's what it's all about,' he continued. 'That's why everybody is here. Everybody's here to just have a good time. All these people are here mostly to have a good time. There's a handful of guys that actually expect to win this thing, but we all know who they are, and that's great.
