The Ursid meteor shower is set to light up the night sky from December 17 to December 24, with its peak expected around December 23, marking the last major meteor display of 2024.
This annual event, first observed by British astronomer William F. Denning in the early 20th century, offers a chance to witness a celestial show as meteors streak across the sky.
Though the winter season's dense atmosphere and a partially lit moon—54% full—could affect visibility, there are simple ways to catch this natural spectacle in all its glory.
According to Robert Lunsford, fireball report coordinator for the American Meteor Society, the best time to observe the Ursids will be between 4 to 5 AM ET on December 23 (2 to 3 PM IST), when the shower peaks.
For those in North America, the prime viewing hours will be midnight to early morning, with up to 10 meteors visible per hour under clear skies. The good news is that no special equipment is required, as the meteors are visible to the naked eye.
To optimise your viewing experience, it's recommended to lie on a comfortable lounge chair and face north, with the moon behind you. Position your gaze halfway up in the sky so the horizon lies at the bottom of your field of view.
If nearby trees or obstacles block your line of sight, simply look higher in the sky where the atmosphere is thinner, and you are more likely to see active meteors.
It's important to allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness by spending at least an hour outside for the best experience.
If you miss this spectacular event due to cloudy weather or sleep, don't worry—the Quadrantid meteor shower is on its way, starting December 26 and peaking on January 3, with easier visibility due to a less intense full moon at just 11%.

Fireball over Georgia sparks meteorite investigation after debris damages home
A bright fireball that lit up the sky over Georgia and surrounding Southeastern states on June 26, 2025, is under investigation as officials examine whether it was caused by a meteorite. Pindi braces for monsoon flooding
With the onset of the pre-monsoon season, the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC), Rawalpindi District Council, cantonment boards, and the Evacuee Trust Property Board have issued final red noticessome for the second timeordering the evacuation of 285 multi-storey buildings across the district that are over 100 years old and prone to leaking during rainfall. Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Hasan Waqar Cheema has imposed a ban on dumping garbage, building material, and other waste into the 22-km-long Nullah Leh and 15 stormwater drains. Station House Officers (SHOs) of area police stations have been directed to register cases against violators. Following directives from the district administration, residents of low-lying areas along Nullah Leh have started moving valuablesjewelry, refrigerators, sofas, and other household itemsto safer locations. Some families have already begun temporary relocation. To deal with potential flooding, the Civil Defence Department, District Administration, and the 111 Brigade have decided to conduct joint full-dress rehearsals next week. These drills will be carried out in low-lying areas near Rawal Dam, including Nadeem Colony and Javed Colony, and will involve Civil Defence, police, and Rescue 1122. The Meteorological Department's forecast for pre-monsoon rains next week has caused concern among residents living near the stormwater channels. Fifteen temporary Civil Defence warden posts have been activated in these areas. Every year, heavy rains during the monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons cause widespread destruction in Rawalpindi, affecting about 70 per cent of the city's population and commercial areas. District Civil Defence Officer Talib Hussain confirmed preparations are complete for the full-dress rehearsal in Javed Colony and Nadeem Colony. The flood season in Rawalpindi has been officially declared from July 1 to September 15.
