Constitution should be credited for keeping country united during crises: CJI Gavai

The Hindu31-05-2025
Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai on Saturday (May 31, 2025) said that whenever the country has faced a crisis, it has remained united and strong, and that the Constitution should be credited for this.
The CJI was addressing a function after the inauguration of advocate chambers and a multi-level parking at the Allahabad High Court.
'When the Constitution was being made and its final draft was presented before the Constituent Assembly, at that time some people used to say that the Constitution is too federal, while some used to say that it is too unitary. Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar had replied that the Constitution is neither wholly federal nor wholly unitary. But one thing I can tell you is that we have given a Constitution which will keep India united and strong both in times of peace and war,' CJI Gavai said.
He said India has been on the path of development after independence due to the Constitution.
'Today we see what is the condition of our neighbouring countries. And India is making a journey towards development after independence. Whenever there has been a crisis in the country, it has remained united and strong. The credit for this should be given to the Constitution,' he said.
'It is our fundamental duty to reach out to the last citizen of this country who needs justice. Be it the legislature, the executive or the judiciary, everyone has to reach out to that citizen,' the CJI told the gathering.

Mafia rule in Haryana, says Cong.; allegations are baseless: BJP govt.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala on Sunday said that Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini, who is also the State Home Minister, is a 'complete failure' and should step down immediately, alleging that 'organised crime is the biggest industry in the State today'. Holding a press conference in Chandigarh on the law-and-order situation in the State, Mr. Surjewala said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has turned Haryana, the land of Bhagwat Gita, into the land of 'Gangs of Wasseypur', saying the State is now ruled by the 'mafias, guns, bullets and ransom' and not the Constitution. Dismissing the allegations, the Saini government termed the Opposition's assertion as 'misleading and factually baseless'. In a statement, the State government said that under its 'zero tolerance for crime' policy, it has taken significant and effective measures to strengthen the law and order in Haryana, adding that against previous years, the crime rate has witnessed a marked decline in the State. 'Bid to spread fear' It termed the Opposition's remarks as 'an attempt to spread fear among the public and misguide the citizens'.

RSS functionaries operating from inside CMO, influencing govt decisions: Rajasthan Cong chief

Elaborating on the allegation, Dotasra said, 'Works of elected representatives of public interest, regardless of their party affiliations, are not being done. The government only acts on the directions of the RSS, whose people are posted in the CM and ministers' offices.' The Congress leader also claimed that government agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) were being 'misused to target those who speak out against the RSS'. 'This is the real 'Gujarat Model', make the weakest person the chief minister, the weakest MLAs ministers, and then use bureaucrats to run a corrupt government,' he said at a 'Save the Constitution' rally in Chomu town near here. Jaipur, Jul 20 (PTI) Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra on Sunday alleged that RSS functionaries are operating from inside the Chief Minister's Office and other ministries, influencing all government decisions. 'If anyone dares to raise their voice against the RSS, they are targeted. I have spoken against the RSS, and the ED was sent to my home too. But we will continue to work for the people. We will not tolerate injustice,' he said. The Congress leader raised concerns over remarks around amending the Preamble of the Constitution. 'Why does the BJP want to remove the words 'secularism' and 'socialism' from the Constitution? These are foundational to India's democracy,' he said. 'If the Vice President of India starts echoing the language of the BJP and RSS, then nothing poses a greater threat to the Constitution,' Dotasra said while accusing the BJP and the RSS of seeking to impose authoritarian rule by amending the Constitution. 'They want to divide the country through hate, and then change the Constitution to create laws like in China or Russia to control the nation forever. But the Congress will never allow this to happen,' he asserted. Last month, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar asserted the preamble of a constitution is 'not changeable' but was changed in India during the Emergency, which signals a betrayal of the 'wisdom' of the framers of the Constitution. He also said the words inserted in the Preamble in 1976 during the period of Emergency, were a 'nasoor' (festering wound) and could cause upheaval. Dhankar's remarks came after the RSS called for reviewing the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble of the Constitution, saying they were included during the Emergency and were never part of the Constitution drafted by B R Ambedkar. The Congress and other opposition parties have slammed RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale's call for a national debate on whether the terms 'secular' and 'socialist' should remain in the Preamble, terming it 'political opportunism' and a 'deliberate assault' on the soul of the Constitution. AP Adivasi JAC demands jobs for only tribals in Agency areas

Andhra Pradesh Adivasi JAC on Sunday demanded that jobs in Agency (tribal) areas be given to tribal candidates only. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu should keep his promise of implementing 100% reservation in Scheduled Areas to STs, said JAC ASR district chairman Rama Rao Dora in a statement on Sunday. Only ST candidates should be appointed as teachers in the tribal areas in the recent DSC notification for teachers, he said. The JAC leader recalled that former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao had issued G.O. no. 275 to remove the inequalities being faced by the tribal people in social, education and employment sectors. Subsequently, Mr. Naidu as the Chief Minister brought out G.O. no. 3 to overcome legal challenges. The Constitution has made it clear that it was the responsibility of the governments to safeguard the job prospects of the tribal people living in the scheduled areas, he added. While welcoming the decision to hold review meetings with Tribal Welfare Director Pratibha Bharathi with all ITDAs on G.O. no. 3 and on other tribal welfare acts, Mr. Rama Rao sought that an IAS officer should be specially appointed to hear the views of the tribal people and take representations from them.
