ED releases Rs 3.82 cr assets to Karnataka State Waqf Board in money laundering case
According to the ED, it initiated investigation on the basis of an FIR filed against two Vijaya Bank officials and Syed Siraj Ahmed, a First Division Assistant with the Waqf Board.

In this case, the Waqf Board issued two cheques amounting to Rs 4,00,45,465/- to open Fixed Deposit accounts at Vijaya Bank. However, instead of opening the fixed deposits, the money was siphoned off by transferring to fictitious entities. Further, Rs 4 Crore was transferred to M/s. Verkeys Realities Pvt. Ltd., which spent Rs 1.10 Crore purchasing a Mercedes car from Ghatge Motors Pvt. Ltd. Further, Rs 2,72,74,444/- was transferred back to the account of M/s. Ajay Sharma Trading Corporation, the agency said.
The Enforcement Directorate said that upon uncovering these illicit financial transactions and a proper money trail of Proceeds of Crime (POC), ED issued a Provisional Attachment Order (PAO) totalling Rs 3,82,74,444/-. On March 31, 2017, ED filed a Prosecution Complaint (PC) before the Special PMLA Court in Bengaluru, against six individuals and entities, including M/s. Verkeys Realities Pvt. Ltd.
In line with the PMLA and its core objective of ensuring the restitution POC to the legitimate victims, the ED did not raise any objections when the Additional Sessions Judge considered the release of the funds to the Karnataka State Waqf Board, the rightful claimant in this case, the agency said.
On July 1, 2025, in a further demonstration of its commitment to justice, ED facilitated the release of the entire amount. A banker's cheque of Rs 3,82,74,444/- was handed over to Jeelani H. Mokashi, CEO (Additional Charge), of the Karnataka State Waqf Board. This marks a significant step forward in the ED's ongoing mission to restore the misappropriated funds to those who have been wronged, the ED said.
This release underscores the ED's commitment to ensuring justice for victims of financial crimes. ED remains resolute in its dedication to combating money laundering and ensuring that the Proceeds of Crime are returned to their rightful owners, the agency emphasised. (ANI)

Madras High Court summons Chennai corporation commissioner
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has summoned Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation on Thursday in connection with a contempt of court petition filed for action against him for disobeying the previous orders on taking action against building plan violations and deviations in Zone V and other zones. The first bench of Chief Justice K R Shriram and Justice Sunder Mohan issued the orders summoning the commissioner when Additional Advocate General J Ravindran mentioned about the previous day's order imposing Rs 1 lakh costs on the commissioner and requested to keep the order in abeyance. The bench questioned why the commissioner did not appear when the contempt case came up for hearing on Tuesday and asked whether the officer thinks he is above the court only because he is an IAS officer. The contempt petition was filed by N Rukmangathan, a former councillor, seeking action against the commissioner for wilful disobedience of an order passed in 2022.

Vadodara Bridge collapse: Death toll rises to 13, ‘exact reason' for accident to be probed
Death toll in the Vadodara Bridge collapse incident rose to 13, as two more bodies recovered from the site, Information Department, Vadodara, informed. A slab of the Gambhira bridge, located on Mahisagar river which connects central Gujarat to the Saurashtra region of the state, collapsed, due to which several vehicles fell into the river. The accident occurred on Wednesday morning. The bridge was located near Padra town in the district. Superintendent of Police (Vadodara rural) Rohan Anand said informed about 10 to 15 metres long slab of the bridge collapsed at around 7.30 am. Five vehicles -- two trucks, two vans and an autorickshaw -- fell into the river after the bridge collapsed. Two other vehicles that came dangerously close to falling were dragged away to a safer location, the collector said. A total of 13 persons died in the bridge collapse included a child, Padra police inspector Vijay Charan said. While Three persons on a two-wheeler, which fell into the river, managed to swim to safety. Five out of the nine rescued persons suffered injuries and were undergoing treatment at the SSG Hospital in Vadodara, but none of the injured persons are in a critical condition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed grief over the tragedy and announced ex gratia of ₹ 2 lakh and ₹ 4 lakh, respectively, to the next of kin of each deceased, and ₹ 50,000 as compensation to the injured. In a post on X, Patel said teams of the state roads and buildings department and private engineers specialising in bridge construction have been instructed to immediately reach the spot and conduct a preliminary investigation into the causes of the collapse and other technical matters, and submit a report. "The fire brigade team of the local municipality and Vadodara Municipal Corporation are working with boats and swimmers at the accident site as part of the rescue and relief operations. The NDRF team has also reached the scene and joined the rescue operation," the CM said. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM," the PMO said on X Gujarat minister Rushikesh Patel said the bridge was constructed in 1985, and its maintenance was carried out periodically as and when required. The exact reason behind the incident will be probed, he said. The nearly 900-metre-long Gambhira bridge has 23 piers and connects Vadodara and Anand districts of Gujarat. It was inaugurated in 1985.
