Al Zubair steers Oman to glory with Group N win in Rally Saudi Arabia
Fellow Omani driver Zakaria Al Amri also impressed, finishing third in the same category despite facing multiple challenges.
Driving his trusted Subaru Impreza alongside co-driver Taha Soomar, Al Zubair dominated the Group N field from the outset of the demanding two-day rally, which marked the third round of the MERC.
The event returned to the Middle East calendar after a long hiatus and was widely regarded as one of the most grueling legs of the championship due to rocky terrain, high temperatures, and multiple stage cancellations.
'First of all, thank God we succeeded in this rally,' Al Zubair said after the finish. 'My thanks to my co-driver Taha Soomar, the technical team and everyone who supported us. This race was really tiring – seven competitors were forced to retire. We set a clear strategy from the start, and our goal was to lead the category. Thankfully, we achieved it,' he added.
Despite tyre issues on several stages, Al Zubair not only maintained his lead throughout the rally but also recorded times that challenged cars from the faster Rally2 category.
The win marked his second major Group N victory of the season after topping the MERC2 class at the 28th Oman International Rally in Sohar, where he also secured a sixth-place overall finish.
'This rally was very nice, very fast,' Al Zubair added. 'It's been challenging – you really have to trust your pace notes here. I'm happy with the performance and we'll build on this momentum.'
Meanwhile, Zakaria Al Amri, also representing Oman in the same category, showed resilience after battling car issues and tyre blowouts that slowed his pace. Driving with co-driver Mohammed Al Marzui, Al Amri secured a valuable third place in Group N, which allowed him to retain his lead in the championship points table.
'The stages were difficult and resulted in many tyre punctures,' said Al Amri. 'I had hoped for a better pace, but I'm happy with the additional points and the third-place finish. I appreciate the team's support and look forward to improving in the next round in Jordan.'
Qatar's legendary driver Nasser Al Attiyah won the overall rally and extended his own dominant run in the MERC, having previously triumphed in Oman and Qatar.

We tested there in March so, hopefully, that plays into our hands a little. With the experience we have got with the car, we should hopefully aim for a positive weekend. 'As always, we aim for a podium. We know it won't be easy. But we need to secure some good points for the championship. Misano was a bit difficult after the first race to not score any points. Now we must focus on scoring points this weekend.' The Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours is located in central France, near the towns of Magny-Cours and Nevers. It staged the Formula One French Grand Prix between 1991 and 2008 and also hosts the Superbike World Championship. A 40-car field of GT World Challenge Europe competitors will share the 4.411km circuit this weekend with entrants in the FFSA French GT Championship, FFSA French Touring Car Championship and FFSA F4, the Alpine Elf Cup series and the Clio Cup series. Free practice for the GT World Challenge entrants starts at 1.20 pm on Friday and precedes pre-qualifying from 8.45 pm. Qualifying for the first of the one-hour Sprint races is scheduled for 2.15 pm on Saturday and race one will get the green light from 8.45 pm. Spectators will then be able to access the pit area from 10. pm The second qualifying session will take place from 09. am on Sunday and precedes another pit walk for spectators from 1.30 pm. The second of the one-hour races will fire into life at 3. pm.

Jaber named as head coach of Iraq's Air Force Club
MUSCAT, JULY 30 Oman's experienced coach Rasheed Jaber was named as head coach of Iraqi Premier League giants Al Quwa Al Jawiya Club (Air Force Club). The deal is for 2025-26 season and it is part of the Iraqi team's strategy to boost the technical performance following last season's fifth place finish in the league standings. Rasheed Jaber, one of Oman's most respected and experienced football coaches, replaced former Iraqi coach Ali Abdul Jabbar, who had taken over mid season after the departure of Qatari coach Wissam Rizq, as the results of the team were not to the desired target. The Iraqi club is counting now on the Omani tactician to revitalise the squad and mount a serious challenge for the league title and domestic competitions. Coach Rasheed, who hails from Salalah, will provide his wealth of managerial expertise to the Baghdad-based club. His most recent experience was with the Oman national team during the Asian qualifiers for 2026 Fifa World Cup. His previous coaching experience in Oman include stints with Dhofar, Seeb, Al Suwaiq and Oman Club. Another Oman coach Talal Khalfan is also currently in Iraq's league as he is serving as an assistant coach at Diyala Club. Attendance of both the Omani coaches in the Iraq's league reflect on the national coaches expertise besides the trust of Iraqi clubs on the foreign coaching talent to enhance competitiveness and tactical innovation. The other Arab and Gulf nationality coaches in Iraq's league are from Egypt, Syria and Jordan. Al Quwa Al Jawiya, a historically dominant force in Iraqi football and one of the most decorated clubs in the country, will look to return to top form under the guidance of Rasheed Jaber, aiming to reclaim league glory and perform strongly in upcoming regional tournaments. The fans and club officials will eye for a better show of Al Quwa Al Jawiya club in this season under technical guidance of Jaber. The club concluded the 2024-25 season in fifth place, trailing behind Al Shorta, Al Zawraa, Zakho and Al Talaba.
