Turkcell seeks extension of licences to 2045, media says

Reuters17-06-2025
ISTANBUL, June 17 (Reuters) - Turkish mobile phone operator Turkcell (TCELL.IS), opens new tab has requested that its current licences be extended until 2045 and expects a 5G tender to be held this year, its Chief Executive Ali Taha Koc was reported on Tuesday as telling journalists.
Koc was also cited as saying by the ekonomim.com news website that if Turkey's current fibre infrastructure were sold off, the estimated valuation was $2.5 billion.
"As Turkcell, we request that the current licences be extended until 2045 along with the 5G licence," he was quoted as saying, noting that 2G, 3G and 4G licences will expire in 2029.
Turk Telekom (TTKOM.IS), opens new tab owns and maintains 78% of Turkey's 577,000-kilometre (359,000-mile) national fibre network through a concession agreement that is set to expire in 2026.
Last November, a senior official told Reuters that Turkey was considering adopting a unified fibre optic telecoms entity to expand its network, signalling it could create a separate manager for the expensive infrastructure investments, though no decision on this has been announced.
"We need fibre optic cable infrastructure," Koc was reported as saying. "We have put bulk fibre infrastructure purchase as an option to move forward quickly, especially in 5G. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare the financing."
"If the fibre cable infrastructure of the operator in question is put out to tender, a value of $2.5 billion could be possible," he added.

Weekend closures announced for works on A140 Long Stratton bypass

A series of weekend and overnight closures have been announced for works on a new County Council said once complete, the works on the A140 at Long Stratton would cut congestion through the town and support the local economy. The bypass will join the A140, which is the main route between Norwich and Ipswich, via a new junction at Church Lane to the north of Long Stratton and at Oakside Farm to the project is expected to be completed by late 2025. The authority said the project was "priority infrastructure" in supporting the delivery of housing and employment growth in the area. It added that the cost estimate has increased to £46.9m because of delays in the planning process and impacts linked to inflation, including the Covid pandemic and the war in for the project comes from the Department for Transport's Major Road Network Fund and local contributions, including money from the Greater Norwich Growth Board. Ministers approved the 2.5 mile (3.9km) bypass in 2023 after motorists said the road had become a "pinch point" at Long Stratton. A full closure will be in place on the A140 between St Michael's Road and Brands Lane overnight from 20:00 BST on Thursday, 3 July to 06:00 on Friday, 4 July. There will also be weekend closures at this location from 20:00 on Friday, 4 July to 06:00 on Monday, 7 July, and from 20:00 on Friday, 25 July until 06:00 on Monday, 28 July. The authority said another weekend closure on the A140 near Oakside Farm is planned for the first weekend in August. Bus services will also be affected and diversions will be put in place for motorists. Once the works are complete, sections of the new bypass will be used to divert traffic around the existing A140 while works at Church Lane and Parkers Lane are carried out. Telecom Italia secures 750 mln euro state-backed loan, sources say

MILAN, July 3 (Reuters) - Telecom Italia (TIM) ( opens new tab is set to receive a 750-million euro ($884 million) syndicated loan backed by Italy's export credit agency SACE, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday. The five-year facility provided by a pool of banks will benefit from a 70% guarantee under SACE's Archimede scheme, the sources said, asking not to be named. It is expected to be finalised as early as this month. The Archimede programme is designed to support Italian companies investing in strategic sectors such as digital transformation and the green transition. It envisages a maximum exposure of 60 billion euros through 2029, of which 10 billion were already taken on by SACE last year, according to the Treasury's multi-year budget plan unveiled in April. Despite the phasing out of the state aid emergency programmes adopted in the wake of the COVID pandemic, Italy helps firms secure funding through several guarantee schemes worth more than 13% of gross domestic product (GDP), the latest government data showed. EU accounting rules state that public guarantees do not drive up the national debt until they are tapped by the banks which benefit. TIM will use the resources to fund ongoing infrastructure upgrades and boost its digital services, in line with national and EU digital goals. Spokespeople for Telecom Italia and SACE declined to comment. TIM, the heir to Italy's former phone monopoly and the country's largest telecoms group, last year sold its prized fixed-line network infrastructure for 18.8 billion euros to a consortium led by U.S fund KKR (KKR.N), opens new tab and including Italy's Treasury. The deal, aimed at slashing the company's debt pile and streamlining its operations, has helped TIM to improve its credit rating, which remains below investment grade territory. State-backed financial conglomerate Poste Italiane ( opens new tab has become TIM's single largest investor this year with a 24.8% stake, replacing France's Vivendi ( opens new tab.
