AI, power, and longevity to drive next decade of transformational innovation: UBS

Business Times2 days ago
[SINGAPORE] Investors should consider allocating part of their portfolios to transformational innovation as a way to diversify risks in an increasingly volatile world, said Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, chief investment officer for global equities in the chief investment office at UBS.
Among these opportunities, artificial intelligence (AI), power and resources, and longevity are structural growth ideas that can deliver attractive returns in the years ahead, noted Hoffmann-Burchardi at UBS' mid-year outlook conference in Singapore on Tuesday (Jul 1).
'The next US$10-trillion companies will most likely arise from one or more of these transformational opportunities,' she said.
AI – which Hoffmann-Burchardi said is 'underappreciated' – will boost productivity to levels unseen before, surpassing productivity in the Internet era.
The power and resources sector will likely be driven by the 'acute mismatch' in demand and supply, especially as more electricity is needed for AI data centres.
Meanwhile, the ageing population in many economies worldwide will drive sectors that boost longevity or support an older demographic.

Immediate benefactors include biotech, pharmaceuticals and medtech companies, while further opportunities lie in the wealth management, life insurance, real estate, and consumer and leisure sectors, she added.
Outlook for H2
For the second half of 2025, UBS expects investors to continue diversifying even as tariff and macroeconomic risks moderate.
Tan Min Lan, head of the chief investment office for Asia-Pacific at UBS, noted that global growth will likely slow in H2, especially as front-loading activities stop.
Tariffs will likely settle at around current levels – at 30 to 40 per cent for China and 10 to 15 per cent for the rest of the world, she said.
Global interest rates are also set to fall further, with the US Federal Reserve expected to cut rates by 100 basis points in the next 12 months from September, said Tan.
For investors under-allocated to broad equity markets, she recommends gradually increasing exposure to diversified global stocks or balanced portfolios to position for stronger potential returns in 2026 and beyond.
At times of low, or falling, cash interest rates, investors should also seek durable income, she added.
Furthermore, investors should lower their exposure to the greenback, as the US dollar will likely weaken over the next 12 months, and the currency's traditional role as a relative 'safe haven' during periods of market uncertainty is under question.
This makes gold a highly effective hedge against geopolitical risk, while alternatives – including hedge funds, private credit, value-oriented buyouts, and quality global real assets – will help deliver returns and enhance portfolio resilience.
Zooming in on Singapore, Tan views Singapore equities as attractive, as the market offers a defensive safe haven amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, backed by a stable currency, generous dividend yields, and a steady earnings outlook.

Oil prices jump 3% as Iran suspends cooperation with UN nuclear watchdog

NEW YORK :Oil prices rose 3 per cent on Wednesday as Iran suspended cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog and the U.S. and Vietnam reached a trade deal, but a surprise build in U.S. crude supplies limited price gains somewhat. Brent crude settled $2.00 higher, or 3 per cent, to $69.11 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained $2.00, or 3.1 per cent, to $67.45 a barrel. Brent has traded between a high of $69.21 a barrel and low of $66.34 since June 25, as concerns of supply disruptions in the Middle East have ebbed following a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Iran enacted a law stipulating any future inspection of its nuclear sites by the International Atomic Energy Agency will need approval by Tehran's Supreme National Security Council. The country has accused the agency of siding with Western countries and providing a justification for Israel's air strikes. "The market is pricing in some geopolitical risk premium from Iran's move on the IAEA," said Giovanni Staunovo, a commodity analyst at UBS. "But this is about sentiment, there are no disruptions to oil." Prices also gained after President Donald Trump and Vietnamese state media said the U.S. and Vietnam had struck a trade agreement that sets 20 per cent tariffs on many of the Southeast Asian country's exports following last-minute negotiations. "Risk appetite appears emboldened by an apparent tariff deal between the U.S. and Vietnam today," analysts at energy advisory firm Ritterbusch and Associates said in a note. Prices pared gains earlier in the session after the U.S. Energy Information Administration said domestic crude inventories rose by 3.8 million barrels to 419 million barrels last week. Analysts in a Reuters poll had expected a drawdown of 1.8 million barrels. Gasoline demand dropped to 8.6 million barrels per day, prompting concerns about consumption in the peak summer driving season. "During summer time, 9 million (bpd) is basically the line in the sand to define a healthy market," said Bob Yawger, director of energy futures at Mizuho. "We're now well below that. That's not a good sign." Meanwhile, planned supply increases by OPEC+, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies including Russia, appeared priced in and were unlikely to catch markets off-guard again imminently, said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at brokerage Phillip Nova. Four OPEC+ sources told Reuters last week the group plans to raise output by 411,000 bpd next month when it meets on July 6, a similar amount to the hikes agreed for May, June and July. Saudi Arabia lifted shipments in June by 450,000 bpd from May, according to data from Kpler, its biggest increase in more than a year. However, overall OPEC+ exports are relatively flat to slightly down since March, Staunovo said. He expects this trend to persist over the summer as hot weather drives higher energy demand. The release of the key U.S. monthly employment report on Thursday will shape expectations around the depth and timing of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in the second half of this year, said Tony Sycamore, an analyst at IG. Lower interest rates could spur economic activity, which would in turn boost oil demand.

IOI starts previews for 683-unit W Residences Marina View luxury project

[SINGAPORE] IOI Properties Group, which began marketing its luxury-branded residences project W Residences Marina View Singapore in late June, is expected to book sales on Jul 12. Located in Marina View, the 683-unit project will sit atop the 360-room W hotel, the Marriott group's second W hotel in Singapore after the one on Sentosa, called W Singapore Sentosa Cove. The project is next to the Shenton Way MRT on the Thomson-East Coast line. In response to queries from The Business Times, IOI said: 'The private preview for invitees presents a rare opportunity to experience first-hand the exceptional value this development brings to the branded residences market. This is achieved without compromising on quality, prime location or the exclusive privileges synonymous with the W brand, managed by Marriott International – the global leader in branded residences.' The marketing materials seen by BT indicate that the 99-year leasehold development comprises 171 one-bedroom units, 310 two-bedroom units, 103 three-bedroom units, 32 four-bedroom units, 64 five-bedroom units, two simplex penthouses and one duplex penthouse. Listings on PropertyGuru show that one-bedroom units, at 538 to 570 sq ft in size, start at over S$2.1 million. The two-bedroom units, at 710 to 850 sq ft, are expected to be priced from S$2.8 million, and the three-bedders, at 1,195 to 1,249 sq ft, from S$5.4 million. The four-bedders spanning 2,250 sq ft start at S$13 million, and the five-bedders, at 2,809 sq ft, are listed for sale from S$16 million. Prices are not available for the penthouses, but BT understands that each penthouse is above 5,000 sq ft in size. W Residences Marina View Singapore is expected to achieve its Temporary Occupation Permit in 2029. In 2021, IOI was the sole bidder for the white site, which it bought for S$1.508 billion or S$1,379 psf ppr, after triggering the release of the plot from the government land sales reserve list. IOI's bid was just S$101 more than the minimum price it committed to paying when it applied for the site. The site was estimated to be able to supply 905 private housing units and 540 hotel rooms. In June 2022, IOI received provisional permission for a 307-room hotel, 748 apartments for sale and 2,000 sq m in gross floor area of retail space on the land parcel. Market talk had it that in 2023, the developer tweaked plans for the project, reducing the number of apartments to 683, and raising the number of hotel rooms to 360. This followed the government's rolling out of a set of cooling measures in April that year, including sharply higher ABSD (Additional Buyer's Stamp Duty) rates for foreign buyers and investment buyers. Last year, IOI completed the Grade-A IOI Central Boulevard Towers, a mixed-use development in Marina Bay nearby, which comprises two Grade-A office towers and a seven-storey retail podium. One of Malaysia's largest property developers, IOI recently announced plans to acquire the remaining 50.1 per cent stake in the South Beach development it built with its joint venture partner, City Developments (CDL). IOI's portfolio of high-end residential properties also include Seascape and Cape Royale, condominium developments in Sentosa Cove which were developed in partnership with Ho Bee Land. The W Residences is the second residential project to be launched in the Marina area. In April 2025, One Marina Gardens in Marina South sold 353 units or about 38 per cent of its 937 units over its launch weekend, amid concerns about a trade war and potential global recession intensifying. The units were sold at an average selling price of S$2,953 psf. W Residences Marina View Singapore's launch comes in a month in which at least seven major projects are expected to come onto the market, several of which will also be in the Core Central Region (CCR). On Wednesday (Jul 2), Frasers Property and Sekisui House opened The Robertson Opus along Unity Street for a private preview. Prices there start at S$3,150 psf.
