Netflix's The Resident stars 'heartbroken' as tributes pour in for Malcolm-Jamal Warner
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his roles as Theo Huxtable in The Cosby Show and AJ Austin in The Resident, has died at the age of 54. The actor tragically drowned on Sunday near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica, as confirmed by Costa Rican National Police.
Following Warner's sad death, which police say was caused by asphyxia as a result of accidental drowning, his The Resident co-stars have been paying tribute to the beloved actor. The Resident originally ran on Fox between 2018 and 2023, before gaining a new international following on Netflix when it was released on the platform last year.
Several of the show's biggest stars, who shared many scenes with Warner, have shared heartfelt statements about the late actor. Legendary surgeon AJ Austin first appeared on the show in season 1, joining the main cast in season 2 and staying until the show ended with season 6.
Emily VanCamp, who played Nic Nevin in the medical drama, took to Instagram to share a black and white picture of them both together.
She captioned the photo: 'I'm not sure I have the words to express what a gift it was to know you and to work with you. Your thunderous laugh, the bear hugs, our chats about love, family and life.
'A true family man with so much integrity and an endlessly generous spirit. You walked the walk my friend. Sending all my love to your beautiful family and all of those who knew you and were close to you. Beyond heartbroken.'
Shaunette Renée Wilson, whose character Dr. Mina Okafor had a close relationship with Warner's character AJ during the show's run, also took to Instagram to share a still of them both in their medical uniforms.
She wrote: 'Last week I had the impulse to text you for one of our lengthy heart check-ins. I truly wish I had so that one of the last words I had of you were of your wisdom, kindness, and that uncanny ability you had to be both unserious and profound within a single sentence.
'I'm beyond heartbroken. You were such a dear friend to me. My heart goes out to the family and loved ones he leaves behind. I cannot conceive the amount of grief with such a tragedy.
'Rest in Power, Malcolm. It was a joy to be Mina to your AJ. I will miss you deeply.'
Meanwhile, Devon Pravesh actor Manish Dayal shared a video of Warner speaking to a crowd about his experience of growing up in the spotlight.
He captioned it with a heartbroken emoji and added: 'Bro, I wish I had the words… You always did.'
Barrett Cain actor Morris Chestnut also shared a touching tribute to the late star, including pictures and a video of their scenes together.
He penned: 'Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Working alongside him on The Resident was an honor.
'He brought so much depth, warmth, and wisdom to every scene and every conversation. One of the nicest in the business. Rest easy, brother. Your legacy lives on.'

Australian reality TV stars shocked by VERY surprising cameo in newly released Happy Gilmore 2 film
Two Australian reality TV stars have expressed their shock after making a very unexpected cameo in the newly released US film Happy Gilmore 2. Love Island Australia stars Kaylah Holmes, 23, and Hannah Steinfeld, 25, are featured in a scene in the Netflix movie - in which the characters watch LIA on TV. In the Adam Sandler movie, golfer John Daly (playing himself) and Christopher McDonald (reprising his role from part one) are seen watching a racy clip from LIA on a TV at Gilmore's house. In the movie, Hannah is seen on the TV flaunting her jaw-dropping bikini body as she takes an outdoor shower, while chatting to Kaylah. 'This girl's got some body on her!' Christopher's character remarks about Kaylah, to which John replies: 'Hey, we do not objectify women anymore.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The shock cameo caught the attention of both reality stars, with Kaylah sharing a clip from the movie to social media and writing alongside it: 'Definitely didn't expect to see this when watching Happy Gilmore 2,' while Hannah added: 'Iconic'. Kaylah and Hannah featured on series six of the Channel Nine reality TV series LIA in 2024. Love Island Australia is available to watch in America on Disney's streaming platform Hulu. The long-awaited sequel premiered on Netflix on Friday. It's been nearly three decades since the cast of Happy Gilmore initially hit the links. And three of the film's iconic stars looked almost unrecognisable on Tuesday, when they appeared on the Today show. Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, and Julie Bowen appeared on the show to discuss the highly-anticipated sequel to the hit 1996 comedy. Sandler, 58, who played the eponymous character, was sporting a shock of salt-and-pepper facial hair, looking a far cry from the fresh-faced 28-year-old who appeared in the original. In the Adam Sandler movie, golfer John Daly (right) is seen watching a racy clip from LIA on a TV at Gilmore's house His casual sense of style hadn't changed though, with the actor wearing a colourful floral-patterned shirt. Julie Bowen, 55, who played Happy's love interest Virginia Venit, also cut a distinctly different figure from her '90s self. In the original film, Julie sported a very era-appropriate short blonde bob. Julie, who is also known for her iconic role as Claire Dunphy on Modern Family, wore her much longer blonde locks down for the chat. She also cut a very stylish figure in a smart houndstooth skirt and matching jacket. Chris McDonald, meanwhile, has not changed markedly since his days playing the film's iconic antagonist Shooter McGavin. Now 70, Chris was sporting a very similar 'do' to the one he had in the comedy juggernaut, only now with a greyer hue. Speaking about the anticipated sequel, the trio admitted they weren't trying to break new ground, but rather play up the nostalgia angle. The sequel comes almost three decades after the original film debuted.

Travis Kelce posts unseen photos from behind the scenes of Happy Gilmore 2 after 'surreal' Netflix cameo
Travis Kelce has given fans a glimpse behind the camera of Happy Gilmore 2, with the NFL legend posting several pictures from the set of the Netflix film. Kelce enjoys a cameo in the golf comedy, which was released on Friday - three decade after Adam Sandler starred in the original classic. To mark the release, Kelce shared a photo dump from his time working on the film. He is seen on set alongside Sandler, his father Ed and even golf legend Jack Nicklaus. 'Man this life is crazy!! Still so surreal I got this opportunity,' Kelce wrote alongside the photos on Instagram. 'SANDMAN!! Thank you brotha, for the opportunity and for giving us all Happy Gilmore 2! Everybody go check it out right now.' Kelce is preparing for his 13th season in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs but the 35-year-old has already taken his first steps into acting. The tight end has hosted a gameshow - 'Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?' - and appeared in horror series 'Grotesquerie'. Now the three-time Super Bowl champion plays the role of a server in Happy Gilmore 2. He is one of many athletes to appear in the film, with Nicklaus, John Daly, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy among the golf stars to make cameos. Kelce is not a prolific user of social media but this was the tight end's second photo dump in as many ways. On Thursday, he went Instagram official with Taylor Swift, sharing a number of pictures from their 'offseason adventures'. They are seen enjoying dinner, clowning around in the snow and skating on an ice rink. Kelce's older brother Jason, mom Donna and dad Ed also feature in the Instagram dump, as does Swift's younger brother Austin.
