Cambodia thanks Malaysia for expediting ceasefire with Thailand, firm on truce

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia said it is steadfast in resolving the border conflict with Thailand and thanked Malaysia for expediting the special meeting held in Putrajaya on Monday between the two neighbours.
Malaysia dispatched a delegation to Cambodia yesterday, led by Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
"Cambodia expresses its deep appreciation to Malaysia, in its capacity as the current Asean chair, for the prompt dispatch of a delegation led by the chief of defence forces of Malaysia to Thailand and Cambodia," Cambodia's Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ministry said in a statement yesterday.
The purpose of the visit, it said, was to discuss the development of a detailed mechanism for the implementation, verification, and reporting of the ceasefire.
The Malaysian officials are in Phnom Penh to coordinate the implementation of the ceasefire and the restoration of normalcy in the border areas in northern Cambodia, which was gripped by armed confrontation since July 24.
Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to stop all military actions, effective from midnight on Monday, following a special meeting initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The United States were the co-organiser of the meeting, with China being the observer.
"It is Cambodia's sincere hope that an impartial observer team tasked with monitoring, verifying, and facilitating the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire will be expeditiously set up, in accordance with the provisions of the special meeting held in Putrajaya," said the statement.
The ministry said that Cambodia firmly rejects any misleading and fabricated accusations that distort the facts on the ground and threaten the fragile trust and dialogue essential for lasting peace.
"Cambodia reiterates that it has no intention, now or in the future, of breaching the ceasefire. Our primary goal is to ensure that peace not only prevails but endures, for the benefit of both nations and the stability of the entire region," said the statement. – BERNAMA

Tailor strategy to demographic, geographic realities, Johari tells Umno

PASIR GUDANG: Umno must adopt a dynamic, geographically focused strategy to regain public support, particularly from the youth, said party vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He said the party's current approach needs to move beyond uniform outreach and be tailored to the demographic and geographic realities of each constituency, especially in urban areas such as Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru. "You can't apply the same strategy across the board anymore. Urban areas require a different kind of engagement than rural ones," Johari said at a press conference today after officiating the Pasir Gudang Umno division delegates' conference. Also present was fellow Umno vice-president and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who heads the Pasir Gudang division. Johari, who is also the Plantation and Commodities Minister and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, said 40 per cent of Malaysian voters are now youth. He added that most young voters are educated, analytical, and integrity-driven in how they assess political candidates. "They evaluate candidates differently than those who once voted for the founding fathers or for big infrastructure," he said. "Campaigns now must match the mindset of the constituency, not just rely on legacy methods." Johari said the party has increased cooperation with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as part of a broader strategy to connect with younger voters, a demographic previously under-engaged. "Now you see Umno programmes involving more NGOs. This didn't happen before," he said. "Many of our activities today are youth-focused, but it's not just about organising events. It has to fit the context of each area." He said urban centres demand digital-savvy, grassroots-driven outreach, whereas rural constituencies may still favour personal touch and service delivery. Johari also said there is a need to understand rival parties' strengths when formulating Umno's tactical approach. "Success lies not just in how dynamic Umno becomes, but also in how well we assess the strengths of those contesting against us," he said. He called for fresh political thinking as the party prepares for the next general election, warning that outdated models could cost Umno the support it needs to regain ground. "We must think differently if we want to win back the hearts of voters, especially the young," he added.

Malaysia's commodities remain competitive even with tariffs, says Johari

JOHOR BARU: The newly revised 19% tariff imposed by the United States on Malaysia is not expected to impact the competitiveness of the nation's commodities in global markets, according to Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He noted that the tariff remains competitive compared to other Asean countries, including Indonesia, which also faces the same rate. "The 19% tariff imposed by the US on Malaysia is among the lowest in Asean countries, and even Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, is subject to the same tariff rate," he explained. "In the context of palm oil, Indonesia is the largest producer and we are number two, but Indonesia is also subject to 19% like Malaysia, so there is no problem," he added. Johari made these remarks at a press conference after officiating the Pasir Gudang Umno division annual general meeting. He was responding to queries about whether the 19% tariff would affect the country's commodities on the international stage. It was previously reported that Malaysia will now face a 19% tariff on exports to the US, reduced from the previous 25%, as per an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump. The new tariff structure takes effect in seven days and applies to goods entering the US for consumption, with limited exceptions for shipments already in transit. Signed on July 31, 2025, the order amends Executive Order 14257 and imposes revised ad valorem duties on multiple trading partners, including all major Asean nations. Under the latest tariff list, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia each face a 19% rate.

US tariff rate won't affect Malaysia's commodities market, says Johari

JOHOR BAHRU: The United States' decision to impose a 19 per cent reciprocal tariff on Malaysian goods will not affect the competitiveness of Malaysia's commodities in the global market, according to Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He stated that the tariff rate remains competitive compared to other ASEAN nations, including Indonesia, which faces the same rate. 'We're almost on par with the lowest rates in ASEAN. For example, Indonesia is the world's top producer of oil palm, and we're number two. 'They are also subject to the 19 per cent rate, so for us, 19 per cent is fair. It's not a problem,' he said. Johari made these remarks after attending the Pasir Gudang UMNO Division delegates meeting earlier today. The US announced the new tariff rate yesterday, reducing it from the previously proposed 25 per cent. The revised tariffs, effective August 1, 2025, will apply to imports entering the US seven days after the announcement, as stated on the White House's website. - Bernama
