PM Anwar: Oil industry steady despite Strait of Hormuz concerns amid Middle East tensions
He made the statement after holding discussions with the Secretary-General of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Haitham Al Ghais, and major oil industry players on the sidelines of the Energy Asia 2025 conference today.
'Of course, they are monitoring the situation closely, but it does not necessarily hurt the industry or price mechanisms (of the commodity). We hope the conflict can be resolved much earlier,' he said.
When asked about the impact of the conflict on the energy industry, Anwar stated that there are concerns about the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for the export of oil and liquefied natural gas, as well as a key trade route for the Middle East region.
At the same time, Anwar also announced major investments by Total, Italy-based ENI, and Saudi Aramco, which he said reflected confidence in Petronas' capabilities.
'Several key agreements related to investments in Malaysia will be signed at the Energy Asia 2025 Conference, which will be held over three days,' he added.
Also taking place at Energy Asia is a closed-door session involving global chief executive officers and top-level leaders from key sectors such as oil and gas, energy, technology, finance, and professional services.
This aims to chart a collective path to stimulate investment, enhance coordination, and accelerate the adoption of technology to drive Asia's energy transition.
The Energy Asia 2025 Conference, themed 'Delivering Asia's Energy,' and being held from June 16–18, serves as a timely platform for Malaysia and the region to assess progress toward energy transition goals and reinforce national commitments toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
The event is also seen as highly relevant amid the intersection of economic diversification and sustainable development, as countries shift from oil to renewable energy (RE) and adopt new technologies such as hydrogen and carbon capture.
Earlier, Anwar delivered the keynote address and officiated the event, which will feature 180 prominent speakers from around the world and attract more than 4,000 delegates, including policymakers, energy professionals, and industry leaders.
Among the main agenda items of the conference are a plenary session titled 'Energy Present, Energy Future: Pathways for Asia's Just Transition,' followed by a leadership dialogue —'Energy at the Crossroads: Policies, Technologies and Investments.' — Bernama

Brent crude futures fell 40 cents, or 0.57%, to $69.27 a barrel by 0115 GMT while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $66.96 a barrel, down 37 cents, or 0.55%, after both contracts closed about $2 a barrel lower on Friday. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and their allies, known as OPEC+, agreed on Sunday to raise oil production by 547,000 barrels per day for September, the latest in a series of accelerated output hikes to regain market share, citing a healthy economy and low stockpiles as reasons behind its decision. The move, in line with market expectations, marks a full and early reversal of OPEC+'s largest tranche of output cuts, plus a separate increase in output for the United Arab Emirates, amounting to about 2.5 million bpd, or about 2.4% of world demand. Analysts at Goldman Sachs expect that the actual increase in supply from the eight OPEC+ countries that have raised output since March will be 1.7 million bpd, or about 2/3 of what has been announced, because other members of the group have cut output after previously overproducing. "While OPEC+ policy remains flexible and the geopolitical outlook uncertain, we assume that OPEC+ keeps required production unchanged after September," they said in a note, adding that solid growth in non-OPEC output would likely leave little room for extra OPEC+ barrels. RBC Capital Markets analyst Helima Croft said: "The bet that the market could absorb the additional barrels seems to have paid off for the holders of spare capacity this summer, with prices not that far off from pre-tariff Liberation Day levels." Still, investors remain wary of further U.S. sanctions on Iran and Russia that could disrupt supplies. U.S. President Trump has threatened to impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russian crude buyers as he seeks to pressure Russia into halting its war in Ukraine. At least two vessels loaded with Russian oil bound for refiners in India have diverted to other destinations following new U.S. sanctions, trade sources said on Friday, and LSEG trade flows showed. However, two Indian government sources told Reuters on Saturday the country will keep purchasing oil from Russia despite Trump's threats. Concerns about U.S. tariffs impacting global economic growth and fuel consumption are also hanging over the market, especially after U.S. economic data on jobs growth on Friday was below expectations. ‘Wasting sanitary pads to mock rivals': Wanita DAP slams veterans' protest as disrespectful to women
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — Wanita DAP has reportedly criticised the Negeri Sembilan DAP Veterans Club for using sanitary pads as gimmicks during a protest against the party's leadership, calling the act inappropriate and disrespectful to women. According to Malaysiakini, Wanita DAP chief and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said she did not agree with the move, as the move reinforced harmful stigma surrounding menstruation. 'Using sanitary pads as tools of attack or ridicule only reinforces the shame and stigma long associated with menstruation,' she was quoted as saying. Teo also reportedly pointed to the reality of period poverty in Malaysia, noting that some students are forced to miss school due to their inability to afford menstrual products. 'And yet, here they are wasting large quantities of sanitary pads just to mock their political rivals," she reportedly said. The Negeri Sembilan DAP Veterans Club reportedly staged a protest yesterday over the appointment of Johor native Vincent Wu as senator, criticising the decision as a betrayal of local interests. During the protest, members wore custom-made masks made from sanitary pads to symbolise what they described as the state leadership's silence on the matter. Lee Kong Hing, the club's chariman, reportedly described the masks as being thick, dense, highly absorbent, and and soundproof — qualities he reportedly said 'perfectly symbolise how seamlessly silent the state leadership is'. In a Facebook post last night, the Federal Territories wing of Wanita DAP condemned the act, urging party members to uphold dignity and engage in respectful discourse.
