Amelia Loulli has won the Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize 2025, supported by the Atlantic Philanthropies and run by The Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen's University Belfast.

Loulli was announced as the winner for Slip, published by Jonathan Cape, during the award night readings in the Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast. She is a PhD candidate at Newcastle University where she researches the poetics of breath and writing trauma. In 2021 she won a Northern Writers' Award and in 2023 she was writer in residence at the British School in Rome. She lives in Cumbria with her three teenagers.
'Thank you to the judges for choosing Slip as their winner,' Loulli said. 'It's hard to articulate how much it means, all these years after beginning to write Slip's first poems, to have this work recognised with such an honour.
'I wrote Slip in the hope that it might challenge inherited shame by opening conversations about the stories and experiences we find it hardest to share. I also wrote these poems as I write all of my poems- in a state of wonder at the immense power of language and in conversation with the poets I most appreciate and admire- many of whom are past winners of this very prize. I'm extremely grateful to the judges and to the Seamus Heaney Centre for confirming Slip in such excellent company.'
This year's judges were Prof Fran Brearton, Seamus Heaney Centre Fellow Fiona Benson, and Dr Dawn Watson.
The shortlist also included The Butterfly House, by Kathryn Bevis; High Jump as Icarus Story, by Gustav Parker Hibbett; rock flight, by Hasib Hourani; The Iron Bridge, by Rebecca Hurst; and Food for the Dead, by Charlotte Shevchenko Knight.
The prize is awarded annually to a writer whose first full collection has been published in the preceding year, by a UK or Ireland-based publisher. The winning writer receives £5,000 and is invited to participate in the Seamus Heaney Centre's busy calendar of literary events.

ONE, an imprint of Pushkin Press, is to publish Little Vanities, the third novel by prizewinning author and critic Sarah Gilmartin next May.
Set in Dublin, Little Vanities follows the decades-long friendship between two couples from their Trinity college days to early middle life. Exploring their marriages and intertwined relationships, the novel circles around a performance of Pinter's Betrayal, with the play's depiction of deception, hidden emotions and veiled motivations all too present in the real world. Displaying Gilmartin's flair for magnetic storytelling readers will expect from her novels Dinner Party and Service, Little Vanities weaves multiple timeframes and points of view into her most compelling and ambitious work yet.

It's a story about the messy, interconnected relationships of two couples approaching 40 who can't quite let go of their youthful desires and ambitions. Gilmartin won the Máirtín Crawford Short Story Award in 2020. Her debut novel Dinner Party (ONE, 2021) was shortlisted for an Irish Book Award and the Kate O'Brien Award. Her second novel Service (ONE, 2023) was a Washington Post top books of summer and included in the Irish Times list of the best Irish fiction of the 21st century (2025). She is the current Arts Council Writer-in-Residence at Dublin City University.

Irish Food History: A Companion, co-edited by Dr Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire of TU Dublin and graduate Dr Dorothy Cashman, has been named Best Culinary History Book in the World at the 2025 Gourmand Awards, held during the Cascais World Food Summit in Portugal.
This global recognition highlights TU Dublin's international leadership in culinary arts scholarship and affirms the university's reputation as a centre of excellence in food culture, history, and academic publishing.
Published by the Royal Irish Academy, Irish Food History: A Companion takes readers on a compelling journey through Ireland's culinary heritage from the Ice Age to the contemporary food scene. The richly illustrated volume features contributions from TU Dublin staff and graduates, including Dr Elaine Mahon, Dr Brian J. Murphy, Margaret Connolly, current PhD candidate Fionnán O'Connor, and PhD graduates Dr Tara McConnell and Dr John D. Mulcahy. The book's distinctive visual design is the work of Brenda Dermody from TU Dublin's School of Art and Design.

Now he has written a debut novel, The Boys, set in London during the summer of 2012. It may be strange to speak of a novel as performing functions, but that is how I read The Boys. Robson, here, assigns his novel a number of tasks: narrating a story spread across a loose family's generations, contriving a cast of characters whose relations are nominally tenuous but affectively robust, and staging their quintessentially witty back-and-forths. Johnny Voghel, the novel's 30-year-old narrator, is in a state of repressed grief. Returned from an admin job at a college in the West Midlands to an empty house in Swiss Cottage inherited from his deceased parents, he mourns a lost time when he, his estranged half-brother Lawrence and the latter's ex-partner lived together in the family home. But the domineering and mercurial Lawrence is beckoned back to London from Chicago following news that his teenage son Jasper is expecting a child. Soon, the house in Swiss Cottage is full again with family and new friends. Lawrence, however, drifts in and out of the narrative, leaving Johnny with a choice: tracking him down to restore their relationship, or orienting his efforts towards the future by helping Jasper and his pregnant girlfriend. But in its accounting of the Voghels' family history, and its depiction of a bygone London backdropped by the Olympics, The Boys luxuriates in a particular kind of north London nostalgia, decisively slotting into the traditions and tropes of a distinctly British literature. In my imagination, Robson has read so many such novels that he has learned their mechanics inside out. This results in The Boys' technical perfection – a unity achieved by an astute and skilful box-ticking. Robson proves a critic can produce a good novel, where 'good' arises from careful stylistic choices. Readers of The Boys might find comfort in that conservatism. I myself enjoyed it as I enjoy a packet of crisps at the pub – pleasurable, and still, it left me wanting. As I finished, I wondered: mightn't a critic – with his knowledge of what has come before – be well placed to probe what could come next?

Newly-acquired Jack B Yeats painting puts Bloody Sunday in the frame

ONE of the few overtly political works painted by Jack B Yeats has been acquired by the National Gallery of Ireland. Though Singing The Dark Rosaleen, Croke Park (1921) does not explicitly reference the shootings at Croke Park on Bloody Sunday in November 1920, the sombre tone evokes the tragedy. On that day, during a Gaelic football match between Dublin and Tipperary, Auxiliaries of the RIC opened fire on spectators, killing 14 civilians, including Tipperary footballer Michael Hogan, and injuring 60 others. The painting is a deeply personal response by Yeats to this event. Sketchbooks in the gallery's Yeats archive contain multiple depictions of hurling matches at Croke Park and indicate his familiarity with the setting. The painting was stolen in the Dunsany Castle robbery in 1990, subsequently returned to the Plunkett family in 1995, sold at Sotheby's for £500,000 and bought by Ben Dunne. The Mary and Ben Dunne Collection was sold by Gormley's in 2022, and the painting was purchased by the National Gallery last year with government support and a contribution from a private donor. How agreeable are you? I would say, professionally, I'm very agreeable because when you're a freelancer and you have so many clients on the go at once, I just do what the clients want me to do. That said, in other aspects of my life, my friends and partner would probably say I'm quite determined and stubborn. What is your middle name and what do you think of it? I was named after my godmother, who is my mom's cousin, but they fell out when I was about eight years of age ... I don't use my middle name at all. I even took it off my passport. Where is your favourite place in Ireland? Dollymount Beach. You can walk for five kilometres and not meet anyone, especially on a bit of a horrible day. And then you see the Poolbeg chimneys, the sight of which is a real moment of personal focus every time I'm there. I'm like, there's the lads. I know I'm home and that I can finally relax and breathe. Describe yourself in three words. Persistent. Compassionate. Tired. READ MORE When did you last get angry? In general, I'm not an angry person. I'm angry at injustice more than anything else, and I think we're all in a constant state of anger and disbelief that there isn't enough being done about the genocide that's happening in Gaza. I'm quite lucky in that I've never lost an awful lot in my life. I consider the greatest loss to be death, and when my dog died, that was the greatest loss for me. That and my campervan burning down a couple of months ago because of an electrical fault in the dashboard. What's your strongest childhood memory? My dad worked in a camera store and would give me these little plastic 35mm point-and-shoot cameras as Christmas present stocking fillers. I had a pink one when I was about three years of age, and it was my first form of expression, before I could even articulate through language. I still remember taking photographs. I did a series on toilet bowls, then light switches, shoes and other inanimate objects. Randomly enough, I was on eBay a couple of months ago and I found the same type of camera for sale. I have it here with me. I'm going to start trying it out to see if I can reclaim some of that three-year-old energy! Where do you come in your family's birth order, and has this defined you? I've one older brother, who is two years older than me. It's quite nice growing up when there's just the two of you. Our parents gave us a lot of freedom, respect and independence. Because of their trust, I became a very independent child and adult from quite a young age. That helped me build courage for myself as I tried new things and lived in new countries. What do you expect to happen when you die? Realistically, feck-all. If I were thinking fantastically, it'd be great if your spirit lived on, but what if you were trapped on Earth without a body? Or without a dog, a camper van, a beach? I mean, could you imagine never smelling sea air again? One of the most recent happiest times took place in 2023. The sun was out, I was with my partner, and I was watching Yusef/Cat Stevens on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. He sang I Love My Dog, which is one of my favourite tunes, and in that moment, I don't think I could have been happier. I was bawling my eyes out. I looked over at my partner. He was just laughing at me, and I was, like, absolutely delighted. Which actor would play you in a biopic about your life? That's a hard one. You don't want to say some amazingly gorgeous celebrity because people will go, what, really?! I'll probably do a Kneecap and see if I can fulfil the role myself. What's your biggest career/personal regret? I spent too much of my early career helping idiot men with theirs. My life would have been different if I had been a little bit more selfish and if I had had better taste in human beings than I did when I was in my 20s. Have you any psychological quirks? If someone on the TV claps their hands, I do the same. If I hear a noise, I repeat it. When I'm home, all the presses and doors have to be closed before I can settle down.
