We're as prepared for Rangers as we can be, says Motherwell boss

Jens Berthel Askou says his side are ready to face the Ibrox giants
Jens Berthel Askou says his Motherwell side are as prepared as they can be for their Premiership opener at home to Rangers next Saturday.

The Lanarkshire side drew 1-1 with German 2 Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin at Fir Park on Friday night in their final warm-up game before Russell Martin brings his Rangers side to town.

Askou feels that the Premier Sports Cup group stage games and friendlies have allowed him to properly assess his squad, so that he knows who should play where, and which areas need to be strengthened.

He said: 'I think we are as prepared as we can be. We would like to have had a few more weeks with just one game a week, because it would have given us some extra time to train and load them differently.
'We could have put more volume into the week, in terms of running and specific phases in training, but that's how it is.
'I think we've got the most out of it, we've had the results we wanted and needed, and progress in many phases of the game, and then we know we have to keep building over the summer.

'We still have to add players to the squad, and we also know that our goal is not to be the best we can be in July or August, but to be the best team we can be this season, and from next season, see if we can become even better.
'I think the games have been very competitive, so it's not like we've missed competition. There have been some really tough cup games for us as well.
'We had a good intense game against Carlisle United, Twente, and [Hertha Berlin] was surely very competitive as well.

'We're getting answers every week of what do we think of the players in the squad, who will play that role the most.
'We've swapped a little bit in different positions, because the system we play is a little bit different from what they've been used to.

'That means some of the answers we had a couple of weeks ago are maybe different to what we're getting now, so it's a bigger puzzle, and we're working with it every day, but I think we're getting more and more valuable information.
'That lets us figure what position we need to target.'
On Hertha, Askou said: 'It's the closest we'd get to the standard of Rangers.

'The team we played is pushing to get back to the Bundesliga, and have a good possibility of getting there, with some really good players who have a lot of experience at a very high level.
'I expected this to be a very hard test, it was for sure, but I think we managed it very well.

'We looked the fitter team in the end and I was impressed with that and I was happy with many things.
'In the first 10 or 15 minutes during the middle of the second half we started to look really tired, and were able to pull ourselves up, without the possibility to swap five players.
'I was also happy with the intensity that we started the game with, and some of the spells we had throughout the game, and the courage to press them high on many occasions.
'In the moments when we struggled a little bit, we didn't lose the bravery and didn't drop back more than necessary.'

Ten man Kilmarnock throw away two goal lead in season opening draw with Livingston

Killie were 2-0 up at the break but the game turned on George Stanger's red card Kilmarnock kicked-off the Premiership season by throwing away a two goal lead in a 2-2 home draw with newly promoted Livingston. ‌ Two goals in the space of just three minutes shortly before the interval appeared to have the hosts in control, but the contest turned on George Stanger's red card midway through the second half. ‌ Djenairo Daniels raced through to open the scoring on 39 minutes with a composed finish that had originally been ruled offside. David Watson doubled the tally moments later when Jerome Prior palmed a Jamie Brandon delivery into the path of the midfielder to roll home. ‌ Livi looked for a way back into the contest, and were handed it by the home side. Stanger dragged Robbie Muirhead down inside the box with whistler Matthew McDermid awarding a penalty and sending off the defender following a VAR check. Muirhead promptly fired home from 12 yards out. The visitors looked the most likely to find the next goal, and they duly did so four minutes from time as Scott Pittman swept home Lewis Smith's pass high into the net for the equaliser to mark a disappointing afternoon for Killie and boss Stuart Kettlewell in his first league game at the helm. With vice-captain Robbie Deas suspended and centre-back an area lacking in depth for the hosts, skipper Brad Lyons was drafted in on the right-side of a back three while new boys Daniels and Marcus Dackers were given the nod as the attacking pair in the season opener. ‌ Both sides looked to get on the front foot early, but chances were lacking. The hosts almost pounced on 11 minutes after stealing possession with Livi looking to play out from the back, but Watson's effort was blocked after being teed up by Dackers. Max Stryjek was man of the match against his former side when the two teams faced off in the League Cup a fortnight ago and he had to be alert to prevent Livi going in front on 20 minutes as Adam Montgomery's fizzing strike from the edge of the box took a deflection in a congested penalty area. The Polish stopper re-adjusted and was able to get down low to claw the ball away before it rolled into the net. The home side took total control of the contest thanks to a quick-fire double just before the break. Daniels timed his run perfectly to race in behind the defence and fire beyond Prior on 39 minutes before the keeper palmed out a Jamie Brandon ball across goal straight into the path of Watson who rolled home under pressure to double the advantage. ‌ Livi looked to drag themselves back into the contest but Montgomery's header under pressure at the back post eight minutes after the restart was comfortably dealt with by Stryjek. With Killie seemingly in control, they shot themselves in the foot midway through the half as, following a VAR check, Stanger was deemed to have dragged down Muirhead inside the box. That resulted in both a penalty and a red card with former Killie man Muirhead slotting home from the spot. He was inches away from doubling his tally a few minutes later when the dead-ball specialist curled a 22-yard free-kick narrowly wide of the woodwork. Livi sensed a change in momentum and went close once again to a leveller on 77 minutes as neat play down the left flank eventually led to Stryjek sticking out a foot to deny Montgomery as the full-back looked to beat him at the near post. The keeper was beaten four minutes from time as Smith darted into the box before rolling the ball into the path of Pittman. Both sides went searching for a dramatic late winner but none arrived as the honours were even in the top flight's curtain raiser.

Livi fight back from two goals down to draw with ten-man Killie

Newly promoted Livingston fought back from two goals down against ten-man Kilmarnock to take a point from the opening match of the new Premiership season. The game at Rugby Park was the only 3pm kick-off on the opening day of the new campaign. And fans were treated to a four-goal thriller, with a red card and VAR drama thrown in for good measure, as the sides played out a 2-2 draw. Djenairo Daniels and David Watson both scored towards the end of the first-half to give the home side a 2-0 lead going into the break. But Livi were thrown a lifeline just after the hour mark when they were awarded a penalty for an incident that also saw Killie defender George Stanger sent off. Robbie Muirhead converted his spot-kick to make it 2-1 going into the last 25 minutes against the ten-men. Scott Pittman then grabbed the equaliser for David Martindale's men with a close range finish with just two minutes of the game remaining. Stevie May thought he had completed the comeback when he had the ball in the net in injury time, but the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build up. Rangers' potential Champions League play-off opponents revealed

This is if they beat Viktoria Plzen in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. Victory over the Czech side would place Rangers just one tie away from the league phase of the [[Champions League]]. However, a loss would see them drop into the Europa League group stage. The challenge ahead is acknowledged, with manager Russell Martin vowing a "right go" at the Champions League. He said: "We've got through a really difficult tie over two legs with a win and we've qualified for the Europa League. "And we can attack the Champions League now and have a right go. "I'm incredibly proud of them, the team, the staff, the fans were amazing, so it's a big night for us." Rangers will be unseeded if they triumph over Viktoria Plzen and will find themselves in the league path draw. This means they could come up against either the winners of the Benfica and Nice clash or the victors of the Red Bull Salzburg versus Club Brugge match. These games are scheduled for August 6 and August 12. The identity of their potential opponents will be confirmed alongside the outcome of the Rangers versus Viktoria Plzen tie. The draw on Monday will provide Rangers fans with a clearer picture of which tie to monitor, with the possibility of facing the winners if they too advance.
