Man charged after kilt-wearing attacker smashes case holding Scotland's Stone of Destiny
Arnaud Harixcalde Logan, 35, appeared at Perth Sheriff Court on Monday to face the charge, which is similar to vandalism.
Logan, whose address was given as Sydney, wasn't asked to enter a plea and was ordered detained until a hearing next week.
Police said that they were called to a 'disturbance' at Perth Museum in central Scotland on Saturday, after reports of a kilt-wearing man attempting to smash the case containing the royal rock.
The 335-pound (150-kilogram) sandstone block is also known as the Stone of Scone (Skoon) — and was used in the crowning ceremonies of medieval Scottish monarchs at Scone Abbey, near Perth. It was stolen by England's King Edward I in the 13th century and taken to Westminster Abbey in London, where it was installed under the seat of the coronation chair.
It has been used in coronations at the abbey ever since — first of English and then of British monarchs The English and Scottish crowns were united under one monarch in the 17th century.
The stone's presence in London long irked Scottish nationalists. In 1950, it was stolen from Westminster Abbey by four Glasgow university students, but was returned in time for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
It was given back to Scotland in 1996, 700 years after its seizure, and displayed in Edinburgh Castle, with the understanding that it would return to England for use in future coronations. Sensitivities around the stone meant that it had to be moved to London in secrecy and amid tight security for the coronation of King Charles III in 2023.
Last year it was put on display at the newly renovated Perth Museum where, according to the building's website, there are 'a range of 24/7 security measures in place at the Museum to protect this precious object.'
Culture Perth and Kinross, which oversees the museum, said the stone wasn't damaged in the incident.

Despite pleading with officers, the car was towed and Watson was hit with a £192 fine. Watson became one of Hollywood's highest-paid actresses after starring in all eight Harry Potter films between 2001 and 2011. Her last major film appearance was in 2019's Little Women, after which she stepped away from the spotlight. At Oxford, she has been coxing the New College women's third rowing team and is said to be dating fellow student Kieran Brown, who recently completed his doctorate. The couple were pictured kissing outside a Gail's Bakery in the city last year. Watson has also made headlines for her stance on transgender rights, having previously clashed with Harry Potter author JK Rowling. Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Watson wrote: 'Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren't who they say they are.'

Federal Hill residents voice concerns after dozens of cars and businesses vandalized
Calls for accountability and a stronger public safety response are growing in Baltimore's Federal Hill after a weekend wave of vandalism left dozens of residents and several businesses dealing with costly property damage. Jen Covino, the Public Safety Chair of the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association, said at least 55 vehicles and three businesses were damaged. It is unknown whether all of the vandalisms are connected to the same suspects. "We need more police officers and more patrols in the city," said Federal Hill business owner Han Kim. "And leave taxpayers questioning why I am paying taxpayer dollars to the city of Baltimore if I am not guaranteed emergency services in public safety where I live," Covino added. New surveillance video from the Federal Hill Cleaners on Charles Street shows the front glass door being shattered on Sunday morning. "So it happened Sunday morning, early morning, around 4:15 a.m. I checked my camera," owner Han Kim said. Cameras were rolling inside the cleaners when three teens seen walking by the business tried to yank on the locked door. One teen kicked the door and shattered the glass. Kim says he's spoken with other victims to see what these teen vandals were trying to steal. "Very tiny things, like water or gum or quarters, or something like that, so they just wanna have fun or something like that," Kim said. Covino said that when she woke up Sunday morning to see what her neighbors were going through, it added stress to their daily lives by way of unexpected costs. "I felt sad to see a number of my neighbors wake up Sunday morning and look, you know, for companies to replace their glass. Most of these folks are gonna be paying probably $1,000 if their deductible doesn't cover it," Covino said. She told WJZ that more than 50 vehicles on her block received property damage this past weekend. "A number of my neighbors on this block have been victims of violent crime, particularly physical assault," Covino said. "We've had armed robberies happen on the street right in front of my former house over there."

Emergency services surround beach following 'concern for safety'
Emergency services descended on a beach in Wirral this evening following reports of a concern for safety. Merseyside Police were called to Fort Perch Rock, Marine Promenade in New Brighton shortly before 9pm on Tuesday, July 15. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, RNLI and HM Coastguard were also in attendance. The person was later found "safe and well", an incident manager for the force confirmed. An eyewitness reported seeing a "huge emergency services presence" at the scene, including three fire engines, police and an ambulance. A spokesperson for HM Coastguard confirmed it was "assisting police with an incident". "We were assisting Merseyside Police and HM Coastguard and left the scene at 21.53."
