Big setback for China: Amazon shuts down Shanghai AI lab as US firms speed up retreat
Amid geopolitical tensions and Communist Party's policies, Amazon has become the latest Western technology giant to scale back operations in China. Lately, IBM, Microsoft, and Apple, among others, have reduced their activities in China and have relocated operations. read more With the closure of its Shanghai artificial intelligence (AI) lab, Amazon has become the latest Western technology giant to reduce its footprint in China. The Financial Times has reported that Amazon has shut down Amazon Web Services' (AWS) AI lab at Shanghai and has dissolved the entire team. In the wake of geopolitical tensions with the United States and repressive policies of the Communist Party, Western tech giants have sought to reduce their activities in China in recent years and relocate many of their operations, including manufacturing of devices. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While the number of roles affected is not exactly known, the newspaper reported sources as saying that Amazon has more than 10,000 employees in China and the AWS at its peak had more than 1,000 staffers in the country. Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser said, 'We've made the difficult business decision to eliminate some roles across particular teams in AWS. These decisions are necessary as we continue to invest, hire, and optimise resources.' Amazon scales back in China over geopolitical tensions Wang Minjie, a scientist at Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Shanghai lab, said on social media that his team was 'being dissolved due to strategic adjustments amid US-China tensions', according to FT. 'Over the past six years, I've had the privilege of leading the team through the golden era of foreign research labs [in China],' Wang further said. Amazon is the latest Western tech giant to cut back its operations and presence in China in recent years. Last year, IBM shut down its research and development (R&D) division in China because of regulatory issues and declining revenue. The closure affected around 1,000 jobs. Last year, Microsoft also asked hundreds of employees to relocate from China. In recent years, Apple and Dell have moved a large chunk of their manufacturing outside of China. Last year, around 15 per cent of all Apple iPhones were made in India. There are multiple reasons for such exits, ranging from the US-China tensions to China's policies. Firstly, As a result of Western export controls, it has become difficult for China-based researchers to collaborate with peers outside of the country. Export controls have also sought to block China's access to most advanced hardware. Secondly, geopolitical tensions and lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic, have also led companies to reduce their dependence on China and move at least manufacturing elsewhere. This diversification of manufacturing and supply chains has been dubbed as 'China-plus one' strategy. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

A Pune-based information technology (IT) union has filed a complaint with the Ministry of Labour and Employment against Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), alleging an indefinite delay in the onboarding of over 600 lateral hiresAccording to the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate ( NITES ), these are experienced professionals from cities including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi, who resigned from their previous organizations after receiving confirmed offer letters and joining dates from TCS.'With experience ranging from 2 to 18 years, these individuals were contributing members of their former organizations and had looked forward to continuing their professional journey with a trusted name like TCS. Unfortunately, upon reporting to the company on their designated joining dates, they were informed of an indefinite delay in onboarding. No official communication, revised schedule, or assurance has been provided since. These individuals are now unemployed, struggling with household responsibilities, EMIs, rent, and basic livelihood needs,' the complaint dated July 22, 2025 reads, as seen by response, TCS said, 'We can confirm that, as always, TCS is committed to honour all offers we have made, whether it is to freshers or experienced professionals. Everyone who has received an offer from TCS, will be onboarded. The joining dates are decided as per business demand and in some cases, they do get adjusted to meet our business needs. We remain in continuous touch with all candidates in these cases and look forward to them joining our company soon.'NITES has requested the Labour Ministry to intervene and direct TCS to provide an official, time-bound commitment on the onboarding timeline for the affected has also requested to 'extend access to the company's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to support affected individuals' mental health; and explore alternate suitable positions for these professionals within the organization'.'NITES believes such corporate practices are deeply unjust and unethical. They violate the principles of fair employment and place workers in vulnerable situations through no fault of their own. We are committed to standing by these employees and ensuring that their voices are heard,' said Harpreet Singh Saluja, President, had earlier reported that NITES had also raised concerns over TCS's newly implemented bench policy . Following complaints from around 78 employees, the union argued that while the policy appears to promote resource optimization, it disproportionately burdens associates upon closer has reached out to TCS for comment on this matter and will update the story as and when the company responds.

Spacetech startup Inbound Aerospace raises $1 million in funding from Speciale Invest
Company Images Inbound Aerospace, a space technology startup incubated at IIT Madras, has raised a $1 million funding round led by venture capital firm Speciale Invest, with Mumbai-based asset management company Piper Serica in 2025 by Aravind IB, Vishal Reddy, and retired navy captain Abhijit Bhutey, Inbound Aerospace is developing autonomous, reusable re-entry vehicles intended to deliver and return experiments between Earth and space. The company says it will use the new capital to develop and test its spacecraft systems, advance research and development, and help achieve major design milestones. Inbound Aerospace's focus is on research and manufacturing enabled by microgravity (weak gravity in an orbiting spacecraft) conditions, as reliance on the International Space Station (ISS) becomes uncertain ahead of its planned retirement in enables production techniques and scientific experiments that are impossible on Earth. The ISS has been a hub of scientific research and human habitation since 2000, and astronauts have been conducting experiments on the station for nearly 25 years, as of this identified several issues with the traditional method of conducting experiments on the ISS. "There are long wait periods of two to four years due to limited experiment slots and crew safety considerations. There are challenges of capsule recovery, which involves significant deceleration loads and extensive search and rescue efforts," he said, adding that the impending decommissioning of the ISS will limit platforms for in-space manufacturing and spacecraft will be used for in-orbit testing, technology demonstration for qualifying satellites, and microgravity research on subjects such as seed growth. The spacecraft will be deployed in Low Earth Orbit and can conduct a flight for about three founders also highlighted in-space manufacturing as a lucrative application. This process leverages the unique conditions of space, particularly microgravity, to develop or cultivate high-value products for use in sectors such as healthcare and materials science. The startup's primary clients are payload implementation partners who design and build experiment hardware for companies and universities, Bhutey Aerospace will transport a specialised experiment box that will conduct and maintain the experiment in desired conditions, and return to Earth. The startup was initially supported by IIT Madras' startup studio, Nirmaan, and now operates from the IITM Incubation Cell. It recently represented India as the only national finalist in Japan's S-Booster 2025, an international space business competition. Inbound plans to launch its first mission, i.e. a minimum viable product of its re-entry vehicle, by early 2028. Elevate your knowledge and leadership skills at a cost cheaper than your daily tea.
