Michele Kang takes over as Lyon president as Ligue 1 club appeals against relegation

American businesswoman Michele Kang has taken over as president of seven-time French champion Lyon after John Textor resigned following the club's relegation over financial irregularities. The South Korea-born Kang is also majority owner of the Lyon's women's team — OL Lyonnes — and has been on Lyon's board of directors since 2023. Lyon said in a statement that Kang will play an 'active role' in leading the club's appeal against the relegation handed down on last Tuesday by the French league's football watchdog, known as DNCG. The case is expected to be heard within the next week. That ruling could also decide whether Crystal Palace will be allowed to play in next season's Europa League, which Lyon also qualified for. Textor also held a 43 per cent stake in Palace — which he has agreed to sell to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson — and UEFA has rules against clubs with the same owner playing the same competition. Lyon added that Textor has also resigned from the board of directors. He became Lyon president three years ago, taking over from longstanding incumbent Jean-Michel Aulas, who sold to Textor's Eagle Football Holdings after 35 years in charge. READ | PSG thumps Messi's Inter Miami to seal FIFA Club World Cup 2025 quarterfinal spot 'Congratulations to Michele Kang on her appointment as head of OL (Lyon). This club deserves the best: ambition, passion, and loyalty,' Aulas posted on X. 'I will remain, as always, fully committed to OL.' The 66-year-old Kang will be supported in her role by Michael Gerlinger, the general manager of Eagle Football Holdings. 'A highly respected figure in European football administration, Michael brings over two decades of experience in governance, regulatory affairs and sports operations,' Lyon said in its statement. Lyon's run of Ligue 1 titles from 2001-08 made it the powerhouse of French soccer. Since Paris Saint-Germain took over at the top, fortunes have steadily dipped for Lyon. The decision to relegate the club followed an audit of its finances by the DNCG, with Lyon's current debt estimated at 175 million euros ($203 million). The DNCG had already provisionally relegated Lyon to Ligue 2 in November, with the club reporting at the time that it had more than 500 million euros ($581 million) of debt. A transfer ban was also imposed in the January transfer window. News of Lyon's relegations was met by dismay from Lyon fans, with one historic supporters group — The Bad Gones — leading calls for Textor's immediate resignation. The club shop was tagged with a blunt message urging him to go. A Champions League finalist five years ago, Lyon narrowly lost to Manchester United in the Europa League quarterfinals this season and missed out on a cash windfall when it failed to qualify for next season's Champions League after finishing sixth in Ligue 1. Three weeks ago, Lyon received a much-needed cash injection by selling coveted playmaker Rayan Cherki to Manchester City for 36 million euros, while high earners like forward Alexandre Lacazette left the club. But it wasn't enough to convince the DNCG that Lyon's books were in order, a task which now falls to Kang. Ligue 1 resumes in mid-August with Lyon scheduled to play at Lens if it wins the appeal. Forbes estimates Kang's worth at $1.2 billion. Kang assumed majority ownership of Lyon one year after taking over the Washington Spirit women's team in 2022 when average gates were around 3,000. They are now around 15,000. She also heads Kynisca Sports International, a women-led, multi-team global sports organization. Last November, she pledged $30 million to U.S. Soccer over five years for women and girls — the largest single investment specifically for women's and girl's programs in the federation's history. As well as her donation to U.S. Soccer, in August 2024 her Kynisca Sports organization set up a $50-million (£39.2 million) global investment fund to help improve the health and performance of elite female athletes. Lyon's women's team — a record eight-time Champions League winner — will enjoy a new, female-specific training campus when it opens in July 2026. The women's team will also share the Groupama Stadium with the men's side. Last season's women's Champions League semifinal against rival PSG attracted 38,466 spectators. Project Hail Mary trailer OUT: Fans applaud Ryan Gosling, Sandra Huller's upcoming film, say 'this looks perfect'

The long-anticipated trailer for 'Project Hail Mary' has finally been unveiled, offering a first glimpse into the epic sci-fi adventure starring Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller. The film follows the story of a former science teacher who is thrust into space in a desperate bid to save humanity from extinction. Running for two minutes and 58 seconds, the trailer introduces us to government official Eva Stratt (Sandra Huller) as she seeks out schoolteacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), who also holds a doctorate in Molecular Biology, persuading him to embark on a space mission critical to Earth's survival. Initially reluctant and overwhelmed—at one point quipping, 'I put the 'not' in astronaut'—Grace ultimately accepts the mission. The narrative takes a sharp turn when Grace awakens aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he is there. Piece by piece, he uncovers the truth: he is the sole survivor of a crew sent to the Tau Ceti solar system in search of a solution to an existential crisis facing Earth. As he fights to recall his purpose, Grace must rely on his scientific expertise, human resilience, and one mysterious companion to complete the mission. The trailer has been met with widespread enthusiasm online, with fans eager to see the adaptation of Andy Weir's best-selling novel brought to life. One viewer shared, 'For a while I was worried about how this would turn out. I'm no longer worried, now I'm just excited (sic).' Another praised the creative team and cast, writing, 'This looks perfect!!!!! Lord & Miller and their cast and crew seemed to have COOKED! March 2026 can't come soon enough (sic)!' A third fan reflected on their experience with the book and excitement for the film: 'This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. I picked it up at an airport bookstore and couldn't put it down until I finished—it had me hooked the entire way through. I'm so glad the movie kept that same sharp comedic tone, and Ryan Gosling is absolutely perfect in the lead role. I couldn't have asked for a better adaptation (sic).' Jeff Bezos needed a Tequila fix—Venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya sent a plane FULL of it to Venice

The Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez wedding gained an extra splash of luxury thanks to Chamath Palihapitiya, the Canadian-American venture capitalist. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday (June 29), Palihapitiya revealed Amazon founder Bezos requested a last-minute shipment of ultra-premium tequila. 'I sent my plane with a case of our tequila to Venice as a wedding present,' Palihapitiya wrote. The brand, newly launched June 21 in Los Angeles, retails for $1,200 per bottle and features bottles shaped like poker chips. The limited edition sold out within hours. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez capped a star-studded, three-day wedding celebration in Venice that drew global headlines—not only for its celebrity guest list but also for sparking protests over wealth and environmental concerns. Jeff Bezos, 61, world's fourth-richest man, married former news anchor Lauren Sanchez, 55, in a private ceremony on Friday (June 27) inside a 16th-century basilica on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. The festivities began on Thursday with a welcome event at Madonna dell'Orto, continued with Friday's formal vows, and concluded on Saturday night with a dance party headlined by Usher. About 200 VIP guests attended, including Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian, Orlando Bloom, Bill Gates, Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump, and the Kardashian-Jenner family. While celebrities gathered for the opulent celebration, hundreds of Venetians and activists marched through the city's narrow streets carrying banners reading 'Kisses Yes, Bezos No' and 'No Bezos, No War.' Protesters condemned the wedding as a symbol of the deepening divide between the wealthy elite and ordinary residents grappling with skyrocketing housing costs, overtourism, and the threat of climate-driven flooding. Organisers claimed a partial victory when security concerns prompted a last-minute change of venue for the final party—from central Venice to the medieval Arsenale shipyard. Bezos donated €1 million ($1.17 million) each to three environmental research organisations working to protect Venice's fragile lagoon. The Venetian association Corila confirmed the donations. However, protesters dismissed the gesture as an attempt to 'appease angry residents.' Bezos and Sanchez confirmed their engagement in May 2023, several years after going public with their relationship. Their wedding capped a whirlwind romance sealed in one of Europe's most iconic cities, amid both lavish celebration and criticism.
