Boston ramps up security for 129th marathon with barriers, checkpoints

Yahoo18-04-2025
With 30,000 runners and about half a million spectators ready to rally, top Boston officials laid out the enhanced public safety plans for the 129th Boston Marathon — aiming for a secure event that welcomes all to celebrate the city's resilience and athletic spirit.
No credible threats specific to the weekend's events or Monday's race have been identified, said Allen Davis, FBI Boston's special agent-in-charge, at a press conference Friday morning at the Fairmont Copley Plaza.
Davis was joined by multiple other Boston and state public safety officials, along with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Jack Fleming, president and CEO of the Boston Athletic Association (BAA), which organizes the marathon.
However, Davis said the agency does consider terrorism threats against Boston as 'elevated' given the city's many patriotic and significant landmarks that could be targeted as part of the symbolic race.
'What concerns us most are homegrown violent extremists or alone actors, those who self-radicalize with little to no warning, and they look for soft targets and easily accessible weapons, like the tragedy we witnessed on New Year's Day in New Orleans,' Davis said.
To 'prevent any type of vehicle attack,' there will be a 'myriad of physical barriers' along the entire route, said State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble.
Additionally, a 'large number' of uniformed troopers and both plainclothes and uniformed Boston Police officers will be stationed along the entirety of the 26.2-mile course, which runs through eight cities and towns from Hopkinton to Boston, Noble said.
Security checkpoints will be enhanced this year, Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said, with strict and thorough bag checks at multiple locations along the race route. Large bags are not allowed, Cox said, and he encouraged attendees to bring no bags at all, as the checkpoint lines 'will be pretty long.'
Attendees also cannot bring drones, weapons, suitcases, coolers, glass containers or cans larger than 1 liter, Noble said. Spectators must stay off the race course, and smoking and public drinking are prohibited.
Medical service will also be upped this year with additional responders along the route with medical stations, the officials said.
The MBTA has issued a traffic advisory with a complete list of road closures and parking restrictions ahead of the parade, which can be viewed at this link. Chief Kenneth Green with the MBTA Transit Police encouraged attendees to utilize public transportation and expect congestion.
All of the Boston officials, including Wu, reiterated the same phrase: 'If you see something, say something.'
'We can't stress enough the importance of speaking up when you come across someone or something that doesn't seem quite right ... When people come forward, history has shown that we increase our chances of preventing tragedies,' FBI agent Davis said.
To coordinate all of the law enforcement at the marathon, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will activate its communication hub at the start of the race, said MEMA Director Dawn Brantley.
The Boston Office of Emergency Management has also 'integrated some new technologies' this year to enhance public communication and situational awareness, said Chief of Emergency Preparedness Adrian Jordan.
The marathon is set to kick off in Hopkinton at 6 a.m. on Monday, April 21, and the finish line is on Boylston Street in Boston, near the Boston Public Library.

Judge rejects request to suppress Google search information from Cohasset man who allegedly killed, dismembered wife

Walshe pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, disinterring a body, and lying to investigators in connection with the Jan. 1, 2023 slaying of his wife, On New Year's Eve 2022, the couple hosted Ana Walshe's former employer at their house, who left around 1:30 a.m., officials have said. Advertisement The guest told investigators he had dinner with the couple and they shared champagne and wine, according to an affidavit. Brian and Ana Walshe were in a good mood and everyone enjoyed themselves, the guest said. By 4:50 a.m., authorities allege, Ana Walshe, 39, was dead, and the disturbing Google searches started. They included 'how to embalm a body,' '10 ways to dispose of a dead body if you really need to,' 'how to stop a body from decomposing,' and 'how long before a body starts to smell.' They were made between 4:55 a.m. and 5:47 a.m. on New Year's Day, prosecutors said. In court papers last month, Walshe's lawyers said he and his prior counsel, Tracy Miner, had reached an agreement on Jan. 6, 2023, allowing authorities to conduct 'a limited search' of Walshe's iPhone and his son's iPad. Advertisement Walshe's consent was necessary at the time because State Police hadn't obtained a warrant for the devices. Walshe's lawyers said the agreement covered 'all communications' between Dec. 25, 2022, and Jan. 6, 2023, the date the electronics were turned over. The sole exception was for communications between Walshe and his lawyer, the filing said. According to the memo, State Police began a forensic search of the devices on the night of Jan. 6, 2023, and continued into the early hours of Jan. 7. An investigator who conducted the work alerted colleagues on the evening of Jan. 7 to the Internet searches in question, which were later referenced in an affidavit for a search warrant, records show. But before a warrant was issued, the filing said, 'police willingly and knowingly violated the agreement by exceeding the agreed-upon scope by downloading and searching the entire content of' Walshe's phone, his son's laptop, and a third laptop with a cracked screen that he turned over. Prosecutors in court papers last month had urged a denial of Walshe's supression motion, arguing that 'discovery of the internet searches and location data from the iPhone and iPad was certain as a practical matter.' Over several days, prosecutors allege, Walshe dismembered his wife's body in the basement and discarded her clothes and other evidence in a dumpster at a liquor store near his mother's home in Swampscott. He also allegedly disposed her remains in dumpsters at apartment complexes in Abington and Brockton. Police also allegedly found blood in the basement of the couple's home. Advertisement Seven days after Ana Walshe's disappearance, police searched the dumpster near the home of Brian Walshe's mother. Inside, they found a COVID vaccination card for Ana Walshe, a Hermes watch, and clothing Ana Walshe was known to wear, according to prosecutors. Forensic testing showed her DNA on items found in the dumpster, prosecutors said. While Brian Walshe failed in his bid to get the Google searches suppressed, he did succeed in getting additional evidence tossed. On Friday, Freniere granted Walshe's request to suppress evidence gleaned from separate search warrants related to a 'GPS install on a 2013 Volkswagen Beetle' with Mass. plates, as well as 'Verizon Records of Cell Phone Number 617-939-8646 insofar it authorized ... location data obtained for December 30, 2022 and December 31, 2022,' records show. Walshe is currently held without bail, and his trial is scheduled to begin in October, records show. Travis Andersen can be reached at

Nolan Smith reveals what's fueling his potential breakout Eagles season

Nolan Smith speaks with clarity, wisdom, and fire ahead of what could be an exciting Eagles season. Nolan Smith is an absolute soundbite machine. That man has a lot of wisdom and is really good at communicating his thoughts & he shoots down a question regarding all the winning he's done in his career and also talks about picking out a new book at Barnes & Noble We live in a microwave society. You've probably heard someone you admire teach that to you a few times. As it turns out, they were right. Patience isn't something we place in high regard. That's especially true of the Philadelphia Eagles fan. Once upon a time, there were teams that wanted their young quarterbacks to sit and learn before throwing them into the fire. Nowadays, those same franchises hope those guys get up to speed and begin constructing Pro Bowl-caliber numbers before the calendar reaches Thanksgiving. If drafted higher, the clock is sped up. Here's the thing. Most acknowledge that quarterbacks need reps. Less often do we hear that sentiment when discussing young edge rushers. Nolan Smith's quiet confidence says everything Eagles fans need to hear Believe it or not, we're already entering year three of Nolan Smith and Jalen Carter's era in Philadelphia. We knew the latter would be a sure thing upon his entry into the NFL. Some had their doubts about the former. His size was mentioned as a potential weakness. He was staring up the depth chart at a Pro Bowler, Haason Reddick, so much of Smith's first season was spent on special teams. There was also a shoulder issue he was trying to labor through. Wouldn't you know it? That's all it took for some to shackle him with the 'bust' label. Bust? Are you serious? Those in the know, including this platform, knew all he needed was experience and time, and in his sophomore campaign, he turned the corner. Now, he has his sights set on achieving even more. That's what some refer to as quiet confidence, but as we've gotten to know Smith, we've found something out about his personality. Sometimes, that confidence is expressed at a higher decibel. Nolan Smith says he's looking to have more than 12 sacks next season!'That's on the low side' Did he just say he's on the hunt for double-digit sacks? Let's take an inventory. Last season, he trumped his single sack as a rookie by notching 6.5 in 16 games with ten starts. Then, he led all defenders with four sacks and four tackles for loss during the Eagles' march to another Super Bowl win. That being said. One of two things is possible. He could wear down by playing more snaps now that Bryce Huff and Josh Sweat are gone, or he could rise to the occasion with more responsibility and opportunity. We all have our opinions. This way, wagers are being placed on the latter scenario.

49ers Drawing Attention From Notable Free Agent Wide Receiver

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With training camp underway, the San Francisco 49ers are hoping to make a run back to Super Bowl contention. After missing the playoffs last season and being plagued by injuries, the 49ers want to emulate their success from two years ago when they made a run to the big game. Unfortunately, in that Super Bowl, San Francisco was unable to defeat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. One of the big questions the 49ers are facing comes at the wide receiver position. While the 49ers have good players at the position, Aiyuk is still working his way back from a torn ACL and they don't have a lot of depth. To that end, it's possible that John Lynch could consider making a move to bring another wide receiver in. One name has shown interest in signing with San Francisco. Former Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Gabe Davis has been open about his interest in the 49ers. During an appearance on the "Up & Adams Show," Davis spoke out about San Francisco. "San Fran is definitely a spot I'm looking at," Davis said. "Shanahan's the man. He knows how to call an offense. They just got a lot of great weapons around there... Definitely a team that interests me because I like to be around great players." Read more: Browns Defender Shockingly Decides to Retire During Training Camp Last season with the Jaguars, Davis played in 10 games. He caught 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Back in 2023 with the Bills, however, he racked up 45 catches for 746 yards and seven touchdowns. Davis has always been known as a deep threat. With Brock Purdy under center, he could be a big-time addition for the 49ers. Adding another big-play threat could be what takes the offense to the next step. Bringing in more quality weapons for a franchise quarterback like Purdy is always a wise decision. Davis is clearly interested in the opportunity. Lynch should seriously consider it.
