Factory manager loses RM300,000 to love scam
GEORGE TOWN: An analysis manager at a factory in Bayan Baru here lost RM300,000 after falling victim to a love scam through social media.
Penang Police deputy chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the incident began when the 45-year-old woman became acquainted with a man claiming to be an American citizen via Facebook in November 2024.
He said not long after, they started communicating via WhatsApp after the man allegedly expressed a desire to pursue a serious relationship with the victim.
"The suspect introduced himself as a businessman in the field of information technology (IT), claiming to be operating a business in a foreign country.
"After a month of getting to know one another, the suspect told the victim that his bank account had been frozen in that country and asked for her help to make payments for the delivery of important stock related to his business," he said in a statement on Friday (June 27).
Mohd Alwi said the suspect promised to repay the money and even offered additional payment as a token of appreciation to convince the victim.
Lured by the online romance and trusting the suspect, the woman then made 16 transactions to five different bank accounts between Dec 12 and 14, 2024.
However, the victim realised that she had been scammed when the suspect asked for more money, allegedly to cover his travel expenses to visit her in Malaysia. He also sent her a tampered photo of a passport.
Mohd Alwi said the woman lodged a police report at the Barat Daya police headquarters on Thursday.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama

SAR Operations Saved Over 1,000 Lives Nationwide Last Year
PASIR PUTEH, June 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) conducted 226 search and rescue (SAR) operations throughout last year, involving 1,348 victims nationwide. Kelantan Maritime director, Captain Erwan Shah Soahdi, said out of the total, 1,259 victims were rescued, 64 were reported dead, and 25 were classified as missing. He said the statistics demonstrate the efficiency and readiness of MMEA's assets in conducting emergency maritime operations. Kuala Selangor cops investigating discovery of newborn baby left by roadside
SHAH ALAM: A newborn baby boy wrapped in a plastic bag has been found abandoned by the roadside near a mosque in Kampung Api-Api, Kuala Selangor on Friday (June 27) night. Kuala Selangor police chief Supt Azaharudin Tajudin said the discovery was reported to police at 9.11pm by Sungai Buloh Hospital. "According to initial findings, the baby was full-term and in stable condition, weighing 2.135kg. He is believed to be less than a week old and his umbilical cord was still attached," he said in a statement on Saturday (June 28). The infant has since been transferred to Tanjong Karang Hospital for a check-up. Azaharudin urged anyone with information to come forward to the nearest police station or contact Investigating Officer Insp Siti Mazliah Azizi at 017-664 9100.
