Land's End to John O'Groats rowers 'won't stop' despite bad weather

BBC News4 days ago
A rowing team attempting a 900-mile (1,448km) journey from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise £57m for motor neurone disease (MND) research, say bad weather which forced them to change their route will not defeat them. The four-strong team from Row 4 MND set off from Newlyn but were hampered by challenging weather 20 miles (32.1km) off the coast of Ireland.Crew member, Matt Parker, said the wind "was against us" and they had taken the decision on Sunday to change course to Milford Haven, off the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales. He said they changed plans as "we're here to do something special" and were inspired by people with MND whose "big thing is doing everything with a smile on your face".
Mr Parker said the message from the MND community had been "don't stop what you're doing".The crew's weather router and safety team came up with a couple of options to continue up the west coast "neither of which were low tariff or low risk", he added. They could have rowed another 50 miles (80.4km) back to Ireland or waited another week for the weather to calm down."It was going to be another tough row and if we didn't make it, it was going to be very difficult to find a way of exiting. We wanted to carry on," Mr Parker said.
Mr Parker swam ashore to the Welsh coast and travelled by taxi, train and car back home to pick up a trailer so the boat could be brought back to Newlyn. The crew plan to now turn left and go anti-clockwise around the south coast of England, beginning at 22:00 BST on Tuesday, instead of heading up the west coast. They expect to reach The Lizard at 05:00 BST on Wednesday and aim to be at the south-east corner of England to row up the east coast late Friday or Saturday morning.
He said the experienced team had more than 270 days of ocean experience between them and were resilient."Twenty four hours ago we thought we weren't going anywhere. If that means changing plans and asking people to help us, we're not shy of doing that," said Mr Parker. He added the team had been motivated by messages from MND charities who told them: "The amount of money that you're trying to raise has the potential to fundamentally change what's going on."

Barafundle Bay in Pembrokeshire named the UK's best beach

Barafundle Bay, the most loved in the UK, is praised for its 'Caribbean-esque' views, with a green backdrop, turquoise waters, and golden sands. Other highly-rated Welsh beaches are Traeth Mwnt (2nd), Dunraven Bay (4th), and Freshwater West (12th). Barafundle Bay, with a Google Maps rating of 4.9 from 1,668 reviews, is celebrated for its preserved natural beauty. For those who prefer hiking, there's a scenic walk to the top of Foel y Mwnt, offering panoramic views of Cardigan Bay. The beach has also won numerous awards, including a Green Coast and Seaside Award. These stunning Welsh beaches offer perfect spots for a getaway without the need to leave the UK. Barafundle Bay, in particular, is expected to attract many visitors due to its natural beauty and the experience it offers, similar to the Caribbean. These beaches not only provide relaxation but also a range of activities such as dolphin watching and hiking, making them ideal for family outings. In total, nine Welsh beaches made it to the top 25 list, highlighting the variety and quality of coastal experiences available in Wales.

Friends outraged after Airbnb host cancels booking because of where they're from

Airbnb said they suspended the host and are now investigating the matter after pals Jemma Louise Gough, 38, and Jamie Lee Watkins, 37, were denied a stay in Manchester Two pals who booked a trip to Manchester for a concert were left "gobsmacked" after being denied an Airbnb stay simply because they were "from Wales". ‌ Jemma Louise Gough, 38, and Jamie Lee Watkins, 37, had been planning to travel from Cwmbran, South Wales, to see Australian music DJ Sonny Fodera perform at Co-op Live in November. But when they tried to book the one-night stay at a private property in the city, their reservation was abruptly declined. The pair, who wrote on the listing that they were coming 'from Wales to see the gig', were left baffled and politely messaged the host to ask why. The response came back bluntly: "Because you're from WALES." ‌ ‌ Jemma, a school support officer and mum-of-two, said the message left her stunned. "My mouth hit the floor – nothing else other than 'because you're from Wales'. It was nothing about us going to the concert or whatever, it was just discrimination of the country. We're amazing people, the Welsh are lush. I don't know what me and my friend - or the whole of Wales - did that's so horrible. It's absolutely horrendous." It comes after another Brit abroad slammed an all-inclusive hotel food, asking 'what on earth is this?' Jamie asked the host for further explanation as to why they'd had their booking rejected, saying it was 'discrimination under the Equality Act 2010'. She said her message was read, but received no response. Registered nurse Jamie, who attempted to make the booking through her account, said: "I just thought, 'oh my gosh, how can you say no just because I'm from Wales?'. Se added: "It was really blunt, just one line: because you are from, in capitals, Wales. What difference does that make? I was just a bit shocked really that people still say things like that. If [they] had said 'I don't want people going to concerts and coming back if they'd had a drink or something, I'd be like yeah, okay, that's fine. That's an explanation." An Airbnb spokesperson said: "Discrimination, including on the basis of nationality, has no place on Airbnb. As soon as this report was brought to our attention, we reached out to the guest to provide our support and suspended the host while we investigate this matter."

Oscar Piastri edges out Lando Norris in final practice in Hungary

Norris headed both sessions at the Hungaroring on Friday but played second fiddle to his championship rival and McLaren team-mate in the concluding running before qualifying. McLaren have been dominant all weekend at the last round before the summer break with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc third, albeit four tenths back. Lewis Hamilton was next up, 0.768 seconds off Piastri's pace, with Kimi Antonelli fifth for Mercedes and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso sixth. George Russell took eighth place but Max Verstappen's troubled weekend continued after he finished way down in 12th. The four-time world champion took aim at the handling of his Red Bull as he ended the session 1.2 sec slower than Piastri. Yuki Tsunoda was 19th of 20 in the other Red Bull. Qualifying for the 14th round of 24 takes place at 16:00 local time (15:00 BST). Piastri holds a 16-point lead over team-mate Norris in the world championship.
