Don't dig, pair plants and automate the mowing: eight gardening hacks you'll wish you'd known sooner

The Guardian26-04-2025
Do you dream of a gorgeous garden but dread the thought of all the digging, weeding, watering and waiting that's involved in getting one? You're certainly not alone. Many of us yearn for a stunning outdoor sanctuary, yet don't have the time or the resources to make it happen. Or do we? We've found eight ways to up your garden game effortlessly, so you can literally sit back and smell the roses.1 Don't only rely on flowers for colour
The obvious way to add colour to a garden is with flowers. But if you're not blessed with green fingers and/or a budget to splash out on a host of plants, there are other routes to a vibrant outdoor space.
Sheds, fences and walls are prime candidates for a bright paint job – terracotta, coral and even a little 'unexpected red' are on-trend colours that will bring instant zing. That said, a dark charcoal grey or denim blue backdrop will really make green foliage pop. And, of course, you can upcycle wooden furniture with an exciting colour change. Tables and chairs are obvious candidates, but you could also think outside the box and transform an old side table into a punchy potting bench.
Pots are another great canvas – you can make plastic pots look very expensive with chalk paint, even mimicking the look of terracotta or stone. And it's super-simple to apply. There's no pre-treatment of the surface, just make sure it's clean and stipple the paint on.
Not so great with a brush? Then look to textiles for that colour boost. Dress furniture with weather-resistant cushions and throws, or make a bigger impact with a colourful outdoor rug that will also hide grubby decking or a patio past its prime.
2 Embrace the 'no dig' approach Digging and turning your old soil to make way for new plants can not only be back-breaking work, but most horticulturists are now of the view that it can also be bad for your soil, disturbing the ecosystem of worms and fungi, disrupting water drainage channels and releasing carbon, to boot.
So put down that shovel and take care of your soil the easy way with no-dig gardening. Unless the soil is particularly weedy, just spread a three- to five-inch layer of compost or other organic matter on top (ideally made in your own compost bin) and plant directly into it. Add a little mulch on top in the form of bark chippings, and you'll also reduce the amount of weeding and watering you'll need to do.
3 Let a robot handle the mowing For some people, cutting the lawn meticulously, perhaps with Wimbledon-style stripes, will be the labour of love that makes their Sunday afternoon. But most of us would rather be soaking up the sun with a good book in hand than wrestling with a lawnmower, even if we do love the look of grass versus gravel. In that case, now could be the time to invest in a robot to do the job for you.
Honda's Miimo range* of intelligent robotic mowers are big on cutting performance and perfect for mowing all sizes of lawns, from veritable postage stamps to small pastures. Winner of a Red Dot Design Award, the Miimo will stylishly navigate your lawn with the aid of boundary wires and a satellite navigation system, ensuring every blade of grass gets cut – but your prize petunias don't. Just tell Miimo when to mow through the in-app scheduling assistant, and off it'll go. The weatherproof casing will protect Miimo in the rain, and for security there's a built-in alarm that sounds if your Miimo is lifted – you will have a code to switch it off. 4 Make strategic plant pairingsDid you know that buddying up certain species of plants can save you a whole heap of time in the garden? By mastering the art of companion planting, you'll be able to worry less about pest control and feeding your plants, as they will essentially look out for each other.
For example, thyme and roses are fine plant companions, as thyme's strong scent will deter the main scourge of roses, blackfly. And as well as making tasty soup, tomatoes and basil are a dream couple when planted side by side. Not only will the basil's scent deter whitefly, it's also said to make your tomatoes tastier and doesn't require much in the way of nutrients, leaving your tomatoes with all the goodness they need to grow. 5 Cut out the weeds with cardboard
Weeding has to be the number one least loved garden task. But rather than getting on your hands and knees (or resorting to chemical solutions), just wait for your next parcel to arrive. Yes, cardboard boxes are the ultimate natural weed suppressant, and can cover large expanses of pesky unwanted growth in an instant.
To suppress weeds with cardboard, lay plain, damp cardboard sheets (removing any glossy bits, plastic or tape) over the area, overlapping them to block sunlight. Add mulch or compost on top to weigh the cardboard down – this smothers the weeds and enriches the soil as the cardboard breaks down. Other ways to kill off weeds naturally include pouring boiling water or a white vinegar solution on them, or substituting cardboard for newspaper.6 Go wild Embracing wilderness in at least a corner of your garden will provide you with a patch of raw beauty for very little effort. 'Meadowscaping' involves replacing a patch of lawn or a flowerbed with native grasses and wildflowers. Once established, your meadow will need very little maintenance – particularly if you pick perennial wildflowers that come back year after year. And you'll attract important pollinators such as bees and butterflies that will keep your whole garden healthy.
To achieve this wild look, you could have a go at 'chaos gardening' – simply gather up any leftover seeds you have lying around, whether they are vegetables, grasses, herbs or flowers, mix them all up and then scatter them on to your soil. Or for more guaranteed (and coordinated) success, use a dedicated wildflower mix.
7 Make an instant impact with lightingWhen the sun goes down, the right lighting won't just make your garden safer – it will transform its mood. It's a good idea to layer your lighting: practical wall lights will aid food and cocktail prep, while soft pendant lights create a cosy atmosphere over a dining table or around a corner sofa. LED candles, lanterns and festoon lights can be used to light a pathway back to the house, and are decorative, to boot. Just always make sure your lights are waterproof (IP65 if they are exposed to the elements) – LED bulbs often fit the bill and are long-lasting, making them a more sustainable choice.
8 Discover drought- and flood-resistant plant speciesIf you're struggling to keep plants alive, either because they are waterlogged by regular rain or are being exposed to long bouts of sunshine, investing in some specialist plants could save you a lot of hassle. This has been a key theme at Chelsea and other big RHS shows in recent years, as extreme weather events become more common. Drought tolerant species include lavender, cordyline, agapanthus and the common fig tree, while those that thrive in wet conditions include ferns, ranunculaceae, willow and quince trees.

I'm petite & curvy – the 3 pairs of M&S jeans that are flattering for larger hips and the styles to avoid

SHOPPING for jeans isn't always easy, with shops like Marks & Spencer have a wide range to choose from it can be hard to know which style is right for you. Don't worry, you don't need to try on every pair to find the perfect fit though, this fashion fan has done all the hard work for you. 2 Posting on TikTok, Hayley shared a handy guide on which styles are best for curvy girls like her. The 55-year-old explained: "I've never been one for wearing jeans until recently and it really is a minefield trying to navigate the most flattering style for my figure." PALAZZO This style has a very wide leg that flares out from the waist and are generally more flowy than other jean styles. Hayley said she'd be keen to give this style a go as someone who has tried the shape before but never in denim. WIDE LEG This style might vary from shop to shop, as the fashion fan noted the wide leg style in Marks & Spencer didn't actually look too wide, so it could be something she could get away with wearing. BARREL Like wide leg jeans, this style has plenty of room down the length of your legs but tapers in slightly at the ankle and hips, giving them that classic look, like a barrel. "Barrel seems to work well for larger hips and shorter people," Hayley pointed out. BOYFRIEND A big no-no as far as the fashion fan was concerned, boyfriend jeans are supposed to look like you've borrowed them from your man's wardrobe. Usually, they have mid to low-rise fit and are loose around the leg, tapering in just at the end. Hayley recommended sticking to straight up and down for a more flattering fit if you're more on the curvy side though. MOM Another no for Hayley, mom jeans usually have more space around the zipper area and tapered at the bottom but can look unflattering. FLARES You might think flared jeans are a win for bigger hips, but Hayley said she steers clean because they're usually too tight on her thighs. That said, if you do have bigger hips but slim legs, this style could work for you. STRAIGHT This style can be hit or miss for fashion fans with big hips since the straight cut can often often be lost once they're on. Why is it so hard to find the perfect pair of jeans... Deputy Fashion Editor Abby Mchale has revealed why it's so hard to find the perfect pair of jeans... If there is one item of clothing that is never easy to buy it's jeans. If you think you've got your size nailed after finding the perfect fit, nine times out of ten when you next come to buying a pair you will most likely still have to try before you buy. But what is it about jeans that makes them such a difficult fit? Well there isn't a universal size guide that every retailer sticks to, so this means that one brands size 12 could be an inch or so different to another brands and that can make all the difference. Plus, it's all about the denim, some jeans are made with stiffer denim that don't give them as much give. Whereas some stretchier denims obviously have more stretch which means they can be more forgiving. However, don't forget that all denim does eventually stretch, so when you're trying jeans on and they feel ever so slightly tight, remember that they will actually give after wearing them. So sadly this does mean the best piece of advice is to just try them on, however if you are short of time or can't be bothered then the Japanese jean test I have found works quite effectively. Wrap the waistband of the jeans around your neck, if they can wrap all the way round and don't leave a gap then they should fit your waist.

How Rosamund Pike found her true English eccentric red carpet style

At the press night of her West End show, Inter Alia, last night, 46-year-old Rosamund Pike cut a strikingly cool figure. Wearing a full Erdem resort 2026 look comprising a floral crop top and matching trousers, accessorised with her go-to talking point elbow-length leather gloves, she epitomised confident, albeit kooky, midlife style. It's a far cry from her red carpet style at the beginning of her career. Take the 2005 London premiere of her breakout film role as Jane Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, for example. Opting for a Grecian-style draped midi dress, complete with waist-cinching silver belt and matching open-toe strappy heels, she could have been any other starlet walking in off the street. Pretty and chic, yes. But stylish? Not really. How times have changed. Fast-forward two decades and the actress, arguably at the height of her powers post- Saltburn (current projects include Amazon Prime's hit The Wheel of Time, the new Guy Ritchie film Wife and Dog, and her first appearance on the West End stage in a new Suzie Miller play) has become one of a handful of quintessentially posh and eccentric English dressers, alongside the likes of her peers Helena Bonham Carter and Tilda Swinton. While throughout the Noughties she largely played it safe, in recent years, she's become far more adventurous with her fashion. In the past 12 months in particular she's been spotted wearing a roll-call of our coolest designers. In November, she opted for a punkish pale-blue and silver foil mini dress from Rabanne, while a few months later, she switched things up in a tuxedo-style dress from Huishan Zhang with embellishment detail. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Leith Clark (@leithclark) She's also shown a particular fondness for Simone Rocha, wearing a nude-coloured pleated gown from the designer's spring/summer 2024 collection last month, as well as a bright red dress with silver padlock detail from her autumn/winter 2025 collection a few weeks later. On both occasions she wore the designer's Marmite fluffy heels – a conversation-starter, if not entirely everyone's cup of tea. And the love-in is mutual: designers want her to wear their designs. 'I think Rosamund Pike has an incredible sense of style,' says the Kazakh designer Meruert Tolegen, whose pieces she has worn in the past. 'I love that she can be sophisticated and daring at the same time. I was thrilled to see her in one of the dresses from my fall/winter 2024 collection. She looked absolutely stunning in it.' But it's not just the hipster labels that Pike has been turning to, she's also been championing more established household names, like Erdem, Chloé and Dior. In fact, what makes her standout is that she doesn't play it safe when she does wear these classic brands – instead, she takes risks. Case in point, the cropped paisley jacket and long shorts she wore from Chloé on CBS This Morning: no floaty, ingénue dresses for her. Similarly, when she wore Dior in February, she chose to be suited and booted, rather than in an LBD. Fashion expert Bronwyn Cosgrave can trace Pike's fashion-forwardness back to 2002, when she appeared in a backless Jenny Packham dress at the premiere of Die Another Day, yet it was her press tour for A Private War in 2018 that really caught her attention. 'She wore this very dramatic, black Givenchy look,' she says. 'And she just had such star quality, she's like a Vanessa Redgrave, she's drop dead gorgeous and a proper thespian.' It was when Pike started working with the stylist Leith Clark, whose other clients include Parker Posey, Lucy Boynton and Keira Knightley, that her sartorial potential was fully realised, posits Cosgrave. 'Leith has this ability to create the sophisticated cool girl,' she explains. 'Rosamund needed someone to shake her out of Jenny Packham, she needed to take a risk, and it was brave. It's certainly paid off.' For Clark, it was a natural transition from being friends to working together due to their shared sensibility. 'We have known each other for more than 20 years but only started working together a year and a half ago with Saltburn,' says Clark. 'Working together is pure joy. I feel like it's a constant celebration of her, of her work. And I feel like we get to present in a public space in a completely authentic way.' In terms of their approach to red carpets, it's all about authenticity. 'It has to feel and look like her,' she explains. 'That part is instinctual. We also think about what project she's promoting... For example, we started together on Saltburn and definitely wanted to honour her character Elspeth, so in fittings always invited Elspeth in, and thought about her. It isn't like that for each project, sometimes it's more genre based, or a mood, or a feeling.' Pike has more projects in the works which means more red carpet appearances on the horizon – long may her partnership with Clark continue.
