Buick Continues to Cook In China With a New Retro-Futuristic Sedan Concept
Buick is largely forgotten in the US, but in China, it's a pretty big deal . If you need proof, just look at the company's latest concept car. The Buick Electra Orbit is a stunning new concept from GM's Chinese subsidiary that "marries the romance of the 1950s with futuristic technology and pure-electric architecture," according to the brand. Developed entirely in-house by the GM China Advanced Design Center, the Electra Orbit is said to take inspiration from space-age spacecraft, jets, and also Buick concepts from the 1950s. The sleek, uninterrupted curves up front and the massive overhang in the rear are reminiscent of those early flying machines, thanks in part to the metallic paint simply known as "Space." Photo by: General Motors Photo by: General Motors Photo by: General Motors If the Electra Orbit looks massive, that's because it is. Measuring in at nearly 19.6 feet (6.0 meters) long and over 6.6 feet (2.0 meters) wide, it's longer and about as wide as a Chevrolet Suburban. Those shiny, disc-shaped wheels measure 24 inches in diameter. Four scissor doors open away from the center point of the car, promoting a serious sense of occasion on arrival. Out back, the Electra Orbit uses a pair of deployable wings that rise up and out of the bodywork to improve drag and create downforce at speed. Despite the Orbit's length, there's only room for four people inside. Focused purely on the comfort of its occupants, the 2+2 seating layout centers around a "wormhole-inspired interface" that serves as an AI assistant, because everything has to have AI to be relevant these days. Thankfully, there's also a ball-shaped controller in the center console for those who want to manually control vehicle functions on the massive "Ring" arch-shaped display, which spans from A-pillar to A-pillar. 'Electra Orbit is a bold exploration of what Buick can be when we blend heritage inspiration with visionary innovation,' Stuart Norris, vice president of design for GM China, said in a statement. 'By reinterpreting space-age motifs and pushing electric-architecture freedoms, we wanted to create a concept that feels both familiar in its Buick DNA and thrillingly new.' Photo by: General Motors GM doesn't go into much detail about the Orbit's powertrain, saying only that it rides on the company's "dedicated EV platform." It also seems fairly clear there are no plans for production in China or elsewhere. Designers will instead likely draw inspiration from the Electra Orbit to use on future production cars. GM breaks EV range record with elaborate 2026 Silverado EV drive test
Range anxiety is one of the leading reasons consumers cite for avoiding electric vehicles, and a big purchase reason for customers of the Silverado EV, which advertises a range of 400-plus miles over its various trims. To address that concern and to amuse its engineers, General Motors put its electric truck to the test last week and smashed a distance record in the process. Under meticulous parameters — including restricting the use of air conditioning in the July heat — the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV Work Truck set a new world record for electric vehicle range, traveling 1,059.2 miles on a single charge, more than double the truck's EPA-estimated range of 493 miles. Lucid Motors held the previous record for electric vehicle range, with 749 miles earlier this summer. GM and other automakers are limited to what they can advertise about their vehicles' ranges outside of the EPA test cycle conducted at the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor. Stephanie Brinley, associate director of Auto Intelligence at S&P Global Mobility, said those tests are meant to create a level playing field among automakers to compare how vehicle ranges perform under the same set of conditions. 'It's very rarely precise on what you get in the real world, but automakers are only able to advertise what number comes out of that test cycle,' Brinley said. The Silverado EV test allowed GM to demonstrate in a one-off case that there's more potential in the battery pack than a consumer may expect. The Silverado EV reached the record after months of preparation and planning. First, the vehicle was optimized, but only in a way that customers could replicate at home, according to GM spokeswoman Catherine Scales. According to the company those optimizations included: Maintaining an average speed of 20-25 mph when safe to do so and avoiding hard braking or quick acceleration. Conducting most of the test with the driver alone in the vehicle. The windshield wiper blades were set to the 'lowest acceptable' position to reduce drag. The Silverado's tires were inflated to their highest acceptable pressure for lower rolling resistance except for the spare, which was removed to lighten the load. The wheel alignment 'was optimized.' An accessory tonneau cover was added to streamline airflow around the truck bed. Climate control was off. Another factor that helped the vehicle's battery life was performing the test in summer, which GM said provided the 'optimum ambient temperature for battery efficiency.' The test was conducted over the course of one week on public roads near GM's Milford Proving Ground and on Belle Isle. Forty GM engineers volunteered to drive the vehicle. GM sold 5,439 Silverado EVs in the first six months of 2025, up 67% over last year but still falling drastically short of its gasoline-powered predecessor. GM sold 289,251 across all Silverado types, including medium and light-duty versions. Jackie Charniga covers General Motors for the Free Press. Tesla Faltering Is GM's Gain, Especially for the Chevy Equinox EV
The latest car news, reviews, and features. The screaming deal that was the Chevrolet Bolt may be missing in action for the time being, but in its place, people finally seem to be noticing that the Equinox EV is a pretty solid value, too. I drove the most basic of base models earlier this year and came away very impressed. It appears I'm far from the only one, as GM has just reported that the all-electric Equinox didn't just have its best month of sales in July—it had the best month ever for a non-Tesla EV, with more than 8,500 units sold. It compounds an ever better month for EVs across the entire GM portfolio, which tallied around 19,000 vehicles. GM attributes part of this to the impending death of the $7,500 EV tax credit, which is coming fast on October 1. Whatever the reason, per GM's reporting, July represented a 115% year-over-year increase in the General's EV sales for the month, coming off the heels of a strong second quarter in which the company moved 146% more EVs than it did over the same period in 2024. If you're curious how the Equinox EV shook out versus its competition during the month of July, here's how the field looks. (Numbers in parentheses represent year-over-year change for each model.) Honda Prologue — 6,318 (+82.7%) Hyundai Ioniq 5 — 5,818 (+70.3%) Ford Mustang Mach-E — 5,308 (+15.6%) Subaru Solterra — 1,562 (+23.0%) Kia EV6 — 1,290 (-16.6%) Not all automakers have reported July figures, but we can get a vague idea of where the unnamed competitors might land based on their overall Q2 results. The Volkswagen ID.4 has been having a much tougher go of it through 2025, with VW moving just 1,992 examples of its electric SUV over the last quarter. The Nissan Ariya has been faring a little better, at 3,323 vehicles sold over the same period. Neither of those numbers includes July sales, so it's unclear how they're kicking off Q3. Additionally, Toyota reported 1,223 sales for the BZ4X this past June, a nearly 10% decrease for that nameplate versus the prior year, which also places it barely behind its badge-swapped cousin, the Subaru Solterra. The Chevrolet Equinox EV's interior, seen here in base 1LT trim, is really good for the price. And the seats are super comfortable. General Motors One of the key things to remember, though, is that the Equinox EV is cheaper than just about all of those alternatives, starting at $34,995. And for that low sum, you get a whole lot: a projected 319 miles of range, loads of space, and a comfortable and very respectable interior with the lone demerit being, you guessed it, a lack of CarPlay and Android Auto for GM's rather unwieldy infotainment system. Provided you can see past that, it's a great car and a great value, even before you tack on a second electric motor or any optional extras. With Tesla's slide over recent months, it's not a huge surprise to see Chevy's cheapest EV picking up the slack. Got a tip? Send it our way at tips@
