Expert panel to look into ‘surge in cases of cardiac arrest' in Karnataka's Hassan

The Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Department has formed a committee to investigate reports of an alleged surge in cases of cardiac arrest in Hassan district. The committee headed by Dr K S Ravindranath, director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research (JICSR) was on Monday directed to submit a report on the matter within 10 days.
In a post on X, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said the Department is seriously taking into account the 18 cases of cardiac arrest reported in Hassan district over the past month.
'There is a need for a comprehensive study regarding the recent rise in heart attacks among young people. Although changing lifestyles, diet, and non-communicable diseases appear to be primary causes at first glance, the case in Hassan has raised several questions. In order to find a solution, a team of experts has been instructed to conduct a study and submit a report within 10 days,' he said.
On Monday, Rao said the department would launch district-wide ECG and blood pressure screening camps with a focus on rural areas. Busting claims that COVID-19 vaccines were causing such cases, he said that factors such as smoking, chewing tobacco, alcohol consumption, stress and genetic causes were key factors, rather than the vaccine.
Recent reports on cases of cardiac arrest have triggered concern in parts of South Karnataka, with various branches of JICSR seeing a surge in the number of outpatients opting for check-ups.

Karnataka CM Siddaramiah's claims on Covid vaccine factually wrong, says Biocon founder

BENGALURU: Refuting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's remark that the Covid-19 vaccine might be a reason for a sudden spike in heart attack-related deaths, Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on Wednesday said that the vaccines were approved under the 'Emergency Use Authorisation' framework, adding that the CM was factually incorrect, contributing to public misinformation. On July 1, Siddaramaiah had claimed that it cannot be denied that the hasty approval and distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine to the public could also be a reason for heart attack deaths. Immediately, the Union Health Ministry took objection to his statement, and dismissed the Covid vaccine link with heart attack deaths. 'Covid-19 vaccines developed in India were approved under the Emergency Use Authorisation framework, following rigorous protocols aligned with global standards for safety and efficacy,' Kiran said on Wednesday, in her reply to the CM's X post. 'To suggest that these vaccines were 'hastily' approved is factually incorrect and contributes to public misinformation,' the Biocon founder stated. She further went on to say that these vaccines have saved millions of lives and, like all vaccines, may cause side effects in a very small number of individuals. 'It is important to acknowledge the science and data-driven processes behind their development, rather than engage in retrospective blame,' she ended.

Vaccine manufacturers' body, Serum Institute of India reaffirm COVID-19 vaccine safety

The Indian Vaccine Manufacturers Association (IVMA) has assured that all COVID-19 vaccines in India were approved for emergency use authorisation based on extensive evaluation in preclinical studies and human clinical trials. 'Patient safety and product quality are always prioritised during the vaccine development and its manufacture,' Dr G V J A Harshavardhan, Director General, IVMA, said in a statement released on Thursday. The statement sought to reassure the public on the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines. 'All COVID-19 vaccines in India were approved for emergency use authorisation [restricted use in emergency situations as per World Health Organization guidelines], he said, adding, 'These approvals were based on extensive evaluation in preclinical studies and human clinical trials, with positive results on safety, efficacy, and immunogenicity of these vaccines.' The IVMA statement comes in the backdrop of the Union health ministry saying on Wednesday that extensive studies by several agencies have 'conclusively established no linkages' between COVID-19 vaccines and sudden deaths. The Serum Institute of India also posted on X that the COVID-19 vaccines were safe and scientifically validated. 'Two large-scale studies by ICMR [Indian Council of Medical Research] and AIIMS [All India Institute of Medical Sciences], as cited by the Ministry of Health have found no link between Covid-19 vaccines and sudden deaths,' SII said. The IVMA statement also noted that prior to their release, all COVID-19 vaccines were tested extensively for safety by the manufacturers and were also provided Batch Release Certification by the Central Drugs Laboratory in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. 'The strengths of innovation and large-scale, high-quality manufacturing are the hallmarks of the Indian vaccine ecosystem. COVID-19 vaccines manufactured in India were largely responsible for not only controlling the COVID-19 pandemic and restricting its impact on lives, livelihoods, but most importantly, enabling India's economic activity and GDP to rebound and grow to new heights globally,' Dr Harshavardhan said. 'This positive impact of COVID-19 vaccination was not only limited to India, but also to several countries worldwide, under the Government of India's Vaccine Maitri programme…,' he added.
