Kansas City Chiefs STC Dave Toub explains the decision to end the punter competition early
During Saturday's training camp press conference, Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub shared his thoughts on sticking with Matt Araiza over Eddie Czaplicki in their punter competition. "He was ahead at the point when I talked about it last week, and then he had even a better day or two days, you know, after that," said Toub, "And then we had some injuries where we had to make a decision, just like I said, decision, just like I said, that might happen, but it forced the decision. Matt (Araiza), he's like, the champion. You've got to knock the champion out, and Eddie (Czaplicki) wasn't able to do that in the period that he was here, but I still think he's an NFL punter. I think he's going to get another chance somewhere else." Czaplicki had a net average of 45.7 yards per punt and 24 punts inside the 20 with a long of 62 while at USC. In addition to his Ray Guy Award, he was named first-team All-Big Ten Conference, the Big Ten Eddleman-Fields Punter of the Year, and first-team All-American. "I wish I could have gotten some games just to see how he (Czaplicki) did there, but somebody else would give him a shot, and I'm sure he's going to make it somewhere. It helped Matt a lot. Competition always helps everybody, you know, somebody who has that high caliber of talent to help them in the pooch area. I think it helped develop them there. Also helped Matt develop a left punt, which he needed to do. Matt, he's in a good place right now, as you know, as long as he keeps the foot on the gas pedal right now, which he will." In his first season with the Chiefs, Araiza punted 62 times for 3027 yards during his 17 appearances in the 2024 regular season and landed 25 punts inside the 20-yard line.

Notre Dame football fall practice No. 3 highlights shared on social media
Notre Dame football has been putting in the work early, and over the first few days of fall practice, we've seen plenty of new developments among the players. The quarterbacks haven't started off as many of us would have liked, but we have to remember, they are both very inexperienced and going up against a top-level defense every day will only make the better. The game will slow down when they play teams that aren't as good, which should be looked at as a good aspect. On Saturday, we saw plenty of the wide receivers going up against the cornerbacks, which showed up plenty about both positions. The Irish need offensive playmakers to step up at the position, and having a deep secondary will only help the team with a potential long season. Check out some of the best Notre Dame practice videos that were shared on social media. Jordan Botelho working his way back from an injury Botelho was looking like he was set to finally break out last fall, only to suffer a season-ending knee injury against Purdue and then a pectoral injury in the off-season. While the Irish have plenty of talent at the position, like more than a few others, there isn't much experience there. Having a veteran like Botelho will be a great mid-season pickup for Notre Dame. Freshman wide receiver Elijah Burress Sure, Burress wasn't facing off against one of Notre Dame's better cornerbacks in the rep, but the showed plenty on it. Creating separation at the line, using his quick first-step to get past the defender, all while keeping his balance and finishing the play shows plenty about the son of former NFL star Plaxico. The future of the position is in good hands with Burress. Freshman cornerback Cree Thomas It's a tough task for anyone going up against Malachi Fields, but Thomas held his own in the rep. You'd like to see him not holding at the top of the route, as there is potential for that to get called a penalty. However, you see how good the footwork is to stay with his assignment, and with more seasoning, should be a good one. Freshman athlete Scrap Richardson For a guy who hasn't been focusing on the position for long, Richardson sure has the look of a player who could help the Irish down the road. The speed is there, and you love to see the adjustment made to the route after the inside was taken away. That was a veteran move, that you don't see many freshman being able to make. Multiple WR vs. DB matchups Iron sharpens iron, and in this situation, the receivers going against the defensive backs is exactly that. This is one of the reasons why the wide outs have seen such a quick jump in talent, going up against elite defenders will only make them better. It will make the next level easier as well, which I think is a big factor why Fields ended up in South Bend. MSU pegged as one team to decline, fail to meet last season's standard in recent article
Is Michigan State basketball in for a decline next season? One CBS Sports writer believes so... CBS Sports released an article this past week that dived into a number of teams that "will struggle to meet last season's standard" and Michigan State made the list. The Spartans are coming off a Big Ten title winning season and Elite Eight finish in the NCAA Tournament, and Isaac Trotter of CBS Sports is not expecting Michigan State to match that same kind of success during the 2025-26 season. "Richardson's departure does open the door for Michigan State to slide back to the rest of the pack in 2025-26," Trotter wrote. "College basketball can be cyclical, at times, and Michigan State has been hit with some unexpected tremors this offseason. The writing was on the wall with the dynamic Richardson down the stretch, but Tre Holloman's abrupt decision to transfer to NC State stung, too." Trotter did, however, note that Michigan State still has a high-floor and that there is still plenty to be excited about for the Spartans next year. "Make no mistake, Michigan State still has a high floor. Its blanketing 3-point defense isn't going anywhere," Trotter wrote. "(Carson) Cooper, (Jaxon) Kohler, (Coen) Carr and incoming freshman forward Cam Ward should help the Spartans keep smoking teams on the glass. (Jeremy) Fears single-handedly is a fast-break machine who should take a healthy step forward with a full, healthy offseason. Defense, rebounding and a turbo transition offense is a good recipe to be competent, and there are some real upside plays in Carr (future NBA player), Ward (who looks built in a lab to play for Izzo) and sophomore Kur Teng (baller)." So it sounds like Trotter is expecting Michigan State to make the NCAA Tournament yet again this season, but just don't expect to win the conference and be a true National Championship contender. That aligns with most (including myself) in this point of the offseason. The other teams expected to drop off from last season that were listed in the article were Saint Mary's, Maryland and Clemson.
