Lando Norris stars in Belgian GP qualifying as Lewis Hamilton suffers latest F1 nightmare
It puts Norris in an ideal position to try to narrow the gap to Piastri in the championship once again, following on from his win at Silverstone two weeks ago. However, as Piastri saw in the Sprint, it is often tough to retain the lead on the first lap at this venue because of the long flat-out section after the first corner.
Still, Piastri said he was "disappointed" to have missed out on pole. In contrast, third-placed Charles Leclerc sounded delighted as he admitted he "didn't expect" to be able to qualifying so high with Ferrari struggling for pace.
A farcical start to qualifying saw Nico Hulkenberg try to but into the queue that had formed at the end of the pit lane to begin the session, only to make contact with the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll who was already in the fast lane. The Sauber driver needed a new front wing as a result of the damage, while the Canadian needed to return to the pits for his mechanics to fix some damage on his car.
It may have had an effect on Stroll's efforts as he could manage only dead last place, one spot below team-mate Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin suffered a wretched session – both slowest overall. Kimi Antonelli was also disappointed to find himself 18th, having failed to make it out of the bottom five in both qualifying sessions at Spa-Francorchamps.
Franco Colapinto was last for most of Q1 but at least managed to jump up to 17th with his final effort, while rookie Gabriel Bortoleto was handed a reprieve when Hamilton saw his best lap time deleted and was dropped to 16th, allowing the Sauber driver to progress.

Max Verstappen confirms 2026 Red Bull plans after F1 contract clause condition triggered
Max Verstappen has confirmed he will remain a Red Bull driver for the 2026 Formula 1 season. It comes after the Dutchman amassed enough points at last weekend's Belgian Grand Prix to ensure that his exit clause did not become available to trigger in the upcoming mid-season break. Verstappen has been constantly linked with a move to Mercedes in recent months. Speculation over his future only increased after a dramatic move earlier this month saw Red Bull axe Christian Horner after 20 years in charge. The 27-year-old only further fuelled the rumours by constantly refusing to say outright in interviews that he planned to stay put. But it was always the most likely outcome, as reported by Mirror Sport on July 7, the Monday after the British Grand Prix. And now Verstappen has finally shifted his stance on his public comments. Speaking ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, he committed his immediate future to his current team and explained why he had chosen not to make any definitive statements about his plans before. He said: "The thing is always that people are waffling so much throughout the whole season, while the only one that actually can or should speak is not speaking. That's me. And I do that on purpose because it makes no sense to start throwing things around, and actually that should be the same for everyone. "Some people just like to stir the pot, some people just like to create drama. But, for me, it's always been quite clear, and also for next year. I'm discussing with the team already the plans, the things that we want to change for next year. So that means that I'm also staying with the team for next year." ---

Anthony Joshua needed just three words when first asked about Jake Paul
Despite being very complimentary of Paul, it seems as if Joshua may face off against the YouTuber-turned-boxer in the ring next year Anthony Joshua showed his class when he was first asked about YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul four years ago. The pair met for the first time in Dubai three years ago and seemed rather cordial with each other. Paul had just started to make big waves in the sport of boxing and - after defeating former UFC champion Anderson Silva - decided to take a little holiday to the Middle East. As for Joshua, the Brit was in Dubai for training and a holiday. The YouTuber-turned-boxer trained with Joshua's friend Lawrence Okolie, and later played laser tag with the ex-champion. A year prior to their meeting, 'AJ' was asked for his thoughts about Paul and insisted he's 'great for boxing.' '[He's] great for boxing", the heavyweight said during an interview with IFL TV. "He's trying, zero amateur experience, throwing himself in the deep end. He'll probably learn a lot more than a lot of fighters, throwing himself in the deep end, putting himself under pressure. Good luck to him.' Recalling the meeting in Dubai, Paul said: "To me that means the most when the legends of the sport are like 'this kid's legit and what he's doing for the sport is great'. It's easy to get lost in the comments and in the sheep hating on you. But then there's guys like Roy Jones Jr, Evander Holyfield, Tyson, all these legends showing love. Even Tyson Fury, current active champions, or Anthony Joshua. I was just with him and he was singing praises; that to me means more [than online hate]. I haven't really seen [many boxing legends badmouth him]. Which I guess is kind of the tell-tale sign; if your peers respect you then that's the most important." Three years on from their link-up, the pair have now discussed a potential fight. Back in March, Joshua called the young American after the latter claimed he could beat him in a dust-up. Both fighters posted images of the phone call with the caption 2026, teasing a potential clash sometime next year. Initially, reports claimed that the pair would trade leather towards the back end of 2026. That said, Paul's promoter and business partner - Nakisa Bidarian - recently revealed that he is having discussions with Eddie Hearn and that the clash could happen a lot sooner than anticipated. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "I think the fight can absolutely happen. I'm looking at it as Jake versus Joshua, which is quite biblical, and it's quite impactful in many ways. I think size wise, we can get comfortable with it, and I think experience wise, Jake is learning very fast and growing, and Joshua is a little long in the tooth. So it could be a very interesting matchup, and we're actively discussing it with Matchroom. "I think we're looking at it happening at the start of 2026. It's public that AJ was taking a little time away, I think he had a little surgery. So once he's ready, and once Jake is ready, we're going to squarely focus on that. It's a fight that Jake wants to do, and that's a discussion we've had at length, and he feels very confident about where he is in his career and his chances of upsetting Anthony Joshua." When is Jake Paul's next fight? Paul is hoping to remain active following his dominant win over former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Days after the victory, the 'Problem Child' was placed in the WBC's cruiserweight rankings. The 28-year-old's promoter revealed his business partner is keen on fighting for a world title 'as soon as possible'. However, he admits it is likely it won't happen next, given the current standings at 200lbs. "Absolutely [he will fight again this year]. November or December," Bidarian told Ariel Helwani when asked about Paul's next steps. "I'm seeing him tonight for dinner, and we will have a conversation [about his next opponent]. The only possibility right now is that Jake wants to fight for a belt as soon as possible. "I have to talk to him, I think it's tough this year [to box for a world title]. Badou Jack is who he wants to fight more than anyone, and he has a mandatory rematch with the guy he just beat [Noel Mikaelian] for the WBC. I don't know if this year is possible [for the title fight], but we'll see."

Vasseur signs new long-term Ferrari contract to end Horner speculation
Ferrari have ended speculation about the future of their team principal Fred Vasseur by agreeing a new, multi-year contract with the Frenchman. The deal closes the door on speculation that the team were considering a move for Christian Horner. Vasseur, who was instrumental in bringing Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari, has been under pressure with the Scuderia underperforming in what was expected to be a strong season. The team are yet to win a grand prix win this year. Vasseur joined Ferrari in 2023, replacing Mattia Binotto and has been central in implementing an overhaul of the team, which has not won a drivers' title since 2007 and a constructors' championship since 2008. The team took five wins last season and finished second in the constructors' championship, leading to high expectations for Hamilton's first season with the Scuderia. However the expected step forward has not materialised and Ferrari remain firmly outpaced by McLaren who have established a dominant advantage over the rest of the field. This led to speculation, particularly in the Italian media, that Vasseur's future was in doubt with his contract set to close at the end of this season and suggestions that Ferrari were considering bringing in Horner, who was dismissed from his post at Red Bull three weeks ago. However before this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari announced it was to stick with Vasseur for the future. 'I'm grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me. This renewal is not just a confirmation, it's a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver,' said Vasseur. 'Over the past 30 months, we've laid strong foundations, and now we must build on them with consistency and determination. We know what's expected, and we're all fully committed to meeting those expectations and taking the next step forward together.' The Ferrari statement did not specify the length of the contract, noting only that it was a 'multi-year' deal and reaffirming their faith in the Frenchman to deliver success for the team. 'Fred joined the Scuderia at the beginning of 2023, bringing with him extensive motorsport experience and a proven ability to develop talent and build competitive teams across all levels of racing,' it read. 'Since then, he has laid a solid foundation with the ambition of returning Ferrari to the top of Formula One.' The team are currently second in the constructors' championship but a full 268 points behind McLaren. Hamilton enjoyed a victory in the sprint race in China earlier this year but, sixth in the championship, has still yet to score a podium after 13 races, the longest he has gone into a season without a top three finish.
