Vanguard Is Now the Top Investor in MicroStrategy Stock. Should You Buy MSTR Too?

Yahoo2 days ago
In a surprising turn of events, Vanguard has emerged as the largest institutional shareholder of MicroStrategy (MSTR), holding 20.5 million shares worth approximately $9.26 billion, representing 8.55% ownership of the company. This development marks a shift for the world's second-largest asset manager, which previously dismissed Bitcoin (BTCUSD) as 'an immature asset class.'
The investment positions Vanguard as the top holder in MicroStrategy, the world's largest publicly listed corporate Bitcoin holder, with 601,550 Bitcoin valued at $74 billion.

Vanguard has previously criticized Bitcoin, with executives calling the cryptocurrency 'speculative' and warning that it could create portfolio 'havoc.'
While competitors like BlackRock (BLK) and Fidelity launched spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, Vanguard notably abstained from the crypto rush. The firm maintained its stance even as Bitcoin reached an all-time high of $123,000 earlier this month. Additionally, Vanguard CEO Salim Ramji recently reaffirmed that the company doesn't make bets on 'speculative assets,' such as Bitcoin.
This quiet accumulation of MicroStrategy shares suggests Vanguard may be gaining indirect Bitcoin exposure while maintaining its public skepticism toward direct cryptocurrency investments, highlighting the complex dynamics between traditional asset managers and digital assets.
Is MSTR Stock a Good Buy Right Now?
Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, has become the poster child for Bitcoin treasury companies. Over the last five years, MSTR stock has surged more than 3,700%, outpacing the nearly 1,200% returns of Bitcoin.
This remarkable outperformance stems from Strategy's aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy, which began in August 2020. Strategy now holds more than 600,000 BTC on its balance sheet, making it the world's largest corporate Bitcoin holder by a wide margin. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor has transformed the software company into what he calls 'the world's first Bitcoin treasury company.'
Strategy's success has sparked a wave of imitators. Even failing businesses are pivoting to Bitcoin treasury strategies, hoping to revitalize their stock prices through exposure to cryptocurrency.
However, this approach carries significant risks. For instance, Strategy employs debt and leverage to acquire Bitcoin, creating what some analysts describe as an ultra-leveraged Bitcoin fund. This approach only works when Bitcoin prices rise, interest rates remain manageable, and market sentiment stays positive.
Is MSTR Stock Overvalued Right Now?
Out of the 13 analysts covering MSTR stock, 11 recommend 'Strong Buy,' one recommends 'Moderate Buy,' and one recommends 'Strong Sell.' The average MSTR stock price target is $543.62, 27% above the current price.
With Bitcoin currently priced near $120,000 acquiring meaningful positions becomes increasingly expensive, which will create a cycle of dilutive stock offerings. While Strategy has delivered exceptional returns, investors should consider whether direct Bitcoin exposure through spot ETFs might offer similar upside with fewer operational risks and complications.

Asia Morning Briefing: Miners and Whales Dumping BTC Amid Rally May Signal 'Local Top'

Good Morning, Asia. Here's what's making news in the markets: Welcome to Asia Morning Briefing, a daily summary of top stories during U.S. hours and an overview of market moves and analysis. For a detailed overview of U.S. markets, see CoinDesk's Crypto Daybook is trading at $117,300 as Asia opens a new business week, just below last week's all-time high of $123,000. Ethereum (ETH) once again is outperforming the world's largest digital asset, holding above $3,700, up 4% in the past 24 hours and 26% over the past week, as capital continues to rotate into higher-beta assets. The CoinDesk 20 Index stands at 4,071.75, a sign of resilient investor appetite. But new data from CryptoQuant suggests potential turbulence may be forming beneath the surface. On July 15, Bitcoin exchange inflows surged to 81,000 BTC, the largest daily figure since February. The spike was driven by whales and miners: transfers of 100 BTC or more jumped from 13,000 to 58,000 BTC, while miner outflows hit 16,000 BTC, nearly all of which was deposited directly into exchanges. Ethereum showed a similar pattern. On July 16, 2 million ETH flowed into exchanges, the highest daily total since late February, following a 131% rally since April. CryptoQuant also noted a drop in miner wallet balances, from 68,000 BTC to 65,000 BTC since June 26, reinforcing the view that miners used last week's rally to realize profits. The confluence of large-holder and miner selling into strength suggests a localized top or a stretch of increased volatility. Historically, inflow spikes of this size have preceded price pullbacks, making this a potential caution flag for traders. While bullish momentum remains intact, the signals are hard to ignore. Enflux, a Singapore-based market maker, is watching technical indicators closely. 'Liquidity remains healthy, and we're watching closely for confirmation in perpetual open interest and altcoin depth,' the firm wrote in a recent note to CoinDesk. 'If ETH dominance continues to rise, we expect the tailwind for midcaps to extend into next week.' Meanwhile, altcoin inflows remain muted. Daily altcoin transactions into exchanges sit at just 31,000, far below the 120,000 observed during prior market tops in March and December 2024. CryptoQuant interprets this as a sign of low selling pressure, suggesting that altcoin holders may have stronger conviction, slower capital rotation, or are simply waiting for a fresh catalyst. For now, BTC and ETH remain the center of attention, but the sidelines may not stay quiet for long. Market Movements: BTC: Bitcoin is trading at $117,100 after consolidating in a tight range, with strong institutional activity earlier in the session giving way to a late-day selloff that broke key support near $118,000 and hints at a potential deeper pullback. ETH: Ethereum is trading up 3.78% as institutional capital pours in and funds rotate out of smaller altcoins, with analysts warning that rising momentum and $331 million in bearish bets could trigger a short squeeze and further accelerate the rally. Gold: Despite a recent dip, CIBC Capital Markets expects gold to average $3,600 in the second half of 2025, citing global uncertainty, rate cut expectations, and central bank stockpiling as key drivers of further gains. A Bitcoin whale just sold $9.5 billion in crypto that was originally acquired for $54,000 in 2014 — recent 80,000 BTC transaction nets an 18 million percent return

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. We seem to be in the middle of an especially frisky season for the so-called Bitcoin whales, as another remarkable crypto-cash-in, valued at $9.5 billion, has been spotted. This extraordinary financial transaction comes to light just a couple of weeks after an $8 billion sale hit the Tom's Hardware headlines. Kakashi on X/Twitter brought this huge trade to light, just ahead of the weekend. 'The Bitcoin whale just sold all the 80,000 $BTC for $9.6B,' they remarked. 'Which was bought at 2011 for $54,000.' Those tens of thousands proved quite a canny investment, 14 years ago or so. Whipping out our abacus, we note that the unnamed whale made about an 18 million percent return. In easier to comprehend (or count to) figures, we could say that the whale's investment ended up multiplying 176,000 compared to their initial stake. Others may prefer to say the return represented about a 145% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the 14 years hold (or is that hodl). One thing is for sure, it would have been pretty difficult to hold onto so much BTC for so long, seeing its value skyrocket, drop back, and hit the stratosphere again. Some would still insist that investments in crypto are entirely speculative, with no material asset values to fall back on if the worst happens. July – the peak of the BTC whaling season As mentioned in the intro, we saw another huge BTC transaction near the beginning of the month. In that instance, another 14-year-diamond-hands crypto investor, rumored to be Roger Ver, made a 4 million percent return on their investment. The story goes that Ver originally bought 80,000 BTC in 2014 for around $210,000. That was the height of the 'Satoshi-era.' In early July 2025, they offloaded the crypto for over $8.6 billion. We noted that the previous record whale BTC trading transaction was for 3,700 BTC. Will we see further whales liquidate their crypto before July is out? We don't know, but if another similar transaction occurs in short order, other long-term holders would have to think very hard about why.
