Cameron Smith finds his putting touch at LIV Singapore

Yahoo14-03-2025

Cameron Smith has reminded everyone that he's still the best putter around as he made an impressive start to the LIV Golf Singapore tournament at Sentosa Golf Club.
But the Australian was, like the rest of the field, left trailing after the first round by the brilliance of two-time major winner Dustin Johnson, who opened up a three-shot lead with a flawless, first-round 63 on Friday.
Johnson's eight-under round was the American's best among the 109 rounds he's played on the Saudi-run circuit, and he achieved it despite having suffered with shoulder soreness at the previous week's LIV Hong Kong event.
The 40-year-old American former Master was three shots clear of Spain's Sebastian Munoz, while Smith showed signs of getting back to his best form as he joined a packed group of eight all tied for third after his bogey-free, four-under 67.
Smith is renowned as a magician with his putter but had actually gone into this week's event ranked only 12th best on the strokes-gained-putting-averages.
But on Friday, the wizardry was back as the 31-year-old sank several long putts en route to his bogey-free 67.
"I've worked so hard on my putting in the off-season," Smith said.
"I don't think there's anyone in the world that's hit more putts than me in the last four months. So it's nice to see the putts going in."
Smith hasn't won an individual tournament since Bedminster in the US in August 2023, the last of his three LIV triumphs, but he did enjoy a team success with his Ripper GC Australian colleagues last year.
Ripper were lying seventh in the Singapore team event, with the in-form Lucas Herbert just a shot behind Smith after a 68, while Matt Jones shot 72 and Marc Leishman 74.

Johnson's 4Aces team were leading by two strokes, inspired by their captain's display, which had followed his painful week in Hong Kong.
"I couldn't turn my head to the right," Johnson explained. "I kind of just pulled when I was on the through swing, so I was hitting everything left. It wasn't a whole lot of fun."
He received treatment after the Hong Kong second round and his body responded prior to Sunday's final when he shot a 64, but he still finished last for the first time at a LIV Golf event.
Johnson, like Smith, is after his fourth LIV individual crown and could become the first player to win in all four seasons.

Kansas City Chiefs OL Trey Smith reflects on health issues before the 2021 NFL Draft

During the latest episode of New Heights, Travis Kelce and his brother Jason welcomed Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard Trey Smith. The Pro Bowl offensive lineman opened up about his battle with blood clots at Tennessee. "One week in conditioning, we were doing half-gassers, and I passed out. I had never passed out. I couldn't breathe well," said Smith, "I lost 13 pounds in a day. I remember talking to our team doctor, 'Hey, you guys gotta run more tests on me; I feel terrible. And he's like, 'We're gonna do a blood draw, just go ahead and go to class." After starting at left tackle during his sophomore season, Tennessee's medical staff discovered blood clots in Smith's lungs and ruled him out indefinitely. The issue was identified in February 2018, before the start of spring practice. "They rush me to the hospital and figure out that I have blood clots in both sides of my lungs," said Smith, "So that was sort of one of those moments where it's like, man, can I still play football? Like, what does this mean? And pretty much, I was working with the doctors for five months. (I had to go on) blood thinners." Smith started all ten games in his last collegiate season, earning first-team All-SEC honors for the Volunteers. "So it was a crazy experience. But in my junior year, I was able to play the entire season. Decided to stay at Tennessee, "said Smith, "I made a promise to my deceased mom, Dorsetta Smith, that I would get my degree and play in the NFL one day. So I kept my promise." Smith was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and has emerged as one of the best offensive linemen in the league.

WATCH: Wisconsin basketball star John Tonje reacts to his NBA Draft selection

What a moment for him Former Wisconsin Basketball star John Tonje witnessed his NBA dreams come true on Thursday evening. Surrounded by friends and family, Tonje looked on as NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum announced the Utah Jazz's selection with the 53rd pick of the 2025 NBA Draft. Immediately afterwards, his loved ones erupted in joy, eliciting a giant smile from Tonje. Here's the moment Tonje realized his NBA aspirations morphed into a reality: Tonje's journey is arguably one of the more memorable of any recent player to represent the Badgers. After playing just eight games before being sidelined for the entire 2023-24 season at Missouri due to injury, Tonje burst onto the scene as Wisconsin's most prolific offensive option. The 6-foot-5 wing began the season with a 41-point barrage against No. 9 Arizona -- a performance that included a baffling 21 made free throws -- to set the tone for what Wisconsin would accomplish during the 2024-25 slate. Tonje would then secure 2024 Greenbrier Tip-Off Tournament MVP nods with strong outputs in wins over UCF at Pittsburgh in UW's mid-November tournament, roughly three months before dropping 32 points in a signature triumph over No. 7 Purdue on the road. In the postseason, Tonje also registered 32 points against No. 7 Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship semifinal and 37 tallies against BYU in the Badgers' NCAA Tournament round of 32 loss. At the season's end, he was named a 2025 Second Team All-American, 2025 Naismith Player of the Year Semifinalist and member of the 2025 All-Big Ten first team. The three-level scorer will now join former Rutgers star Ace Bailey and Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr., who pocketed an NCAA title with the Gators in April, in Salt Lake City. The 2024-25 iteration of Utah went 17-65, the worst record in the entire NBA. Tonje's professional journey will begin in Utah's summer league action from July 5-7. Lando Norris targets a much-needed win from pole at the Austrian Grand Prix

Associated Press SPIELBERG, Austria (AP) — Lando Norris is targeting a win to boost his Formula 1 title hopes Sunday after qualifying on pole for the Austrian Grand Prix, his first race since colliding with teammate Oscar Piastri in Canada. Norris was fastest by more than half a second in qualifying Saturday in a dominant display which seemed to come as a relief to the British driver, who's often struggled to show his best pace in qualifying this year. Charles Leclerc starts second for Ferrari, with teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth after an unexpectedly competitive day for the Italian team. Piastri leads Norris by 22 points in the standings and will be right behind his teammate on the grid after the Australian qualified third. Piastri had to abandon his last lap when Alpine's Pierre Gasly spun in front of him and said he was confident of having the pace to challenge on Sunday. Defending champion Max Verstappen, who's third in the standings, starts seventh on the grid after complaining of a lack of grip in qualifying. ___ AP auto racing: recommended
