Scheduled load shedding to impact Sabah, Labuan from Aug 1-7
These works carried out by PETRONAS will impact over 600,000 domestic users in Sabah and Labuan, said Sabah Electricity Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar at a press conference here on Wednesday (July 30).
He said maintenance works on offshore and onshore platforms would result in the gas supplies to the two Independent Power Producers (IPP) in Kimanis being disconnected.
These two IPPs are the Kimanis Power plant (255MW) and SPRE power plant (100MW), he said.
Yaakob said they did not foresee any power disruptions in the initial phase of discussions with PETRONAS and the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) earlier this year.
However, based on information received on Tuesday (July 29), it was found that the power plants were unable to operate using alternative fuel, and this resulted in the need to load the shed, he said.
He said a total of 195MW of power will be lost in the Sabah grid system for this seven-day period, which explains the load shedding from Aug 1 to Aug 7.
Yaakob said that if possible, he hoped PETRONAS could postpone the maintenance works at SOGT until the generation capacity stabilises, so that there would be no power supply disruptions.
'This measure is needed to ensure stability in Sabah's electricity system. If maintenance works
were put on hold, then the people of Sabah will have some relief,' he said.
He said the load shedding process would be inconvenient to users in Sabah and Labuan, especially during peak hours between 10am and 10pm, where each area would have no supply for an hour or two, on a rotation basis.
Yaakob said Sabah Electricity would work closely with all stakeholders, especially the IPPs and ECoS, to monitor the situation while taking proactive measures to reduce power disruptions.
He urged the public to get more information on the load shedding schedule, which includes time, date and area affected via the Sabah Electricity Facebook page and the Sabah Electricity application.

Sabah Electricity welcomes SOGT maintenance rescheduling
Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity (SE), in a statement on Thursday, welcomed the rescheduling of maintenance works at the Petronas-owned Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) from 1 August to 5 August this year. The adjustment allows two independent power producers (IPPs) more time to switch their operations from gas to diesel fuel. This transition process requires careful planning to maintain a stable electricity supply across the state. SE expressed appreciation for the cooperation shown by all parties involved in ensuring smooth preparations. It also hopes the IPPs will carry out their technical adjustments efficiently and on schedule to support system stability in Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Maintenance work at Kimanis gas terminal rescheduled
Abdul Nasser KOTA KINABALU (July 31): The integrated maintenance work at Sabah Oil & Gas Terminal (SOGT) Kimanis which was originally scheduled to begin from August 1 to 7 has been rescheduled to August 5 to 11. According to ECoS Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, this rescheduling was decided in a joint meeting between ECoS, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd and grid system operator yesterday. This rescheduling is to provide room for the completion of repair works on damaged units belonging to Sabah Electricity and independent power producers, reliability testing of the independent power producers' operations in Kimanis using diesel fuel, and also the completion of additional Battery Energy Storage System capacity of 40MW. This rescheduling will be able to significantly reduce the impact of power supply rationing to consumers in Sabah should it be needed for the stability of the Sabah grid network. According to Nasser further, the integrated maintenance work at SOGT together with offshore assets is a mandatory requirement to renew the Certificate of Fitness (CF) by the Department of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) to ensure that the assets involved always operate meeting the stipulated safety standards. Throughout this maintenance work, gas supply will be shut off to two independent power plants namely Kimanis Power Plant and SPR Energy which will operate using diesel fuel. 'In addition, gas pipeline connection work for a new generation project currently being built by Sabah Electricity in Kimanis with a capacity of 100MW will also be implemented which can only be done during this gas supply shutdown. With the completion of this project in the third quarter of 2025 together with other generation enhancement initiatives, it will be able to increase the Sabah Grid generation reserve margin from the current 17% to 30%. As a record, the reserve margin in 2023 was less than 10%. This increase in reserve margin is very necessary to add resilience to the Sabah Grid in case of damage to several generation plants. Abdul Nasser added that, apart from efforts to increase generation capacity (supply side), electricity users can also play a role from the load demand aspect (demand side). The easiest method is to use electricity in an energy-efficient manner and electricity usage that can be done after peak hours, which is after 9 pm. Earlier yesterday, Sabah Electricity Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob H. Jaafar anounced that electricity supply in Sabah and Labuan would be rationed from August 1 to 7 due to scheduled maintenance at the SOGT owned by Petronas. An estimated 200,000 account holders will be affected, with power outages lasting one to two hours on a rotational basis.
