Malaysia takes third place at Genting World Lion Dance Championship
The Petaling Jaya Catholic High School Alumni Association Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe, making their debut, scored 9.59 points to secure the podium finish.
They received USD6,000, a trophy, and medals presented by Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Michael Oh Head, a member of the troupe, shared his pride in representing Malaysia despite the pressure.
'We gave our best performance and will keep training to improve. We hope for more opportunities to bring glory to the country,' he told Bernama.
Two other Malaysian teams, Kwong Ngai Lion Dance and Malaysia Xuan Long Dragon and Lion Dance Rawang Selangor, also reached the finals.
Kwong Ngai finished seventh with 8.89 points, while the Rawang team withdrew due to a member's injury.
Siow Ho Phiew, advisor to the Malaysian Lion Dance Association, praised the teams' achievements.
'Having three Malaysian teams in the finals is a major accomplishment that enhances our global reputation,' he said.
Singapore dominated the event, with Yi Mei Athletic Association's B Team winning first place (9.78 points) and their A Team securing second (9.66 points).
They took home USD18,000 and USD10,000, respectively.
Spencer Lee of Resorts World Genting highlighted the event's evolution, noting the creative use of props and storytelling.
'Lion dance is now both a cultural performance and a high-stamina sport. We hope it becomes an international event, possibly in the SEA or Asian Games,' he said.
The championship, organised by Resorts World Genting and the Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Federation, featured 40 teams competing since July 25. - Bernama

Malaysia enjoyed a medal rush in the last two days with five more silvers from Lee Ronn in boys' 14-15 changquan (9.270), Lee Cheng Wei in girls' 16-18 changquan (9.426), Ong Wei Bin in boys' 16-18 changquan (9.433), Bryan Wee in boys' 13 and under daoshu (9.073) and Logan Lim in boys 13 and under nangun (9.036).

T'ganu Gears Up For Biggest Tour Gateh D'Tranung
KUALA TERENGGANU, July 28 (Bernama) – A total of 26 teams from 11 countries will compete in the Tour Gateh D'Tranung 2025, scheduled to take place from Oct 25 to Nov 3. Terengganu Youth Development, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman, Hishamuddin Abdul Karim, said the number of participants for the fourth edition of the tournament has increased compared to last year's 23 teams from nine countries. He said participating countries include Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia and the Netherlands. bootstrap slideshow 'We have 12 local teams and 14 international teams taking part in the race, with total prize money of RM216,000. In fact, we received many applications from local clubs, but some had to be declined for various reasons. Pandelela pulls out with shoulder pain at Singapore Worlds
SINGAPORE: A recurring shoulder injury proved costly for Pandelela Rinong, forcing her and partner Lee Yiat Qing to withdraw halfway through their women's 10m platform synchro routine at the World Aquatics Championships on Monday. The Malaysian pair completed just two of five dives, scoring 87 points, before pulling out during the preliminaries at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Pandelela revealed that the injury, sustained earlier this month, flared up during the warm-up session. "After two dives, we decided to withdraw for safety reasons," she wrote on Facebook.
