ENG vs IND: England toils as Jadeja, Sundar anchor India's innings
Starting the session, both all-rounders had been given clear instructions and didn't take any risk whatsoever after losing skipper Gill just before lunch. England's lead kept reducing to bits as both batters toiled hard and kept rotating the strike among them.
Stokes too tried to return to his spell despite his shoulder struggles, but his lethal bouncers couldn't find the inspiration this time to take one of the batters out on the day. Fifties from Jadeja and Washy hand India the lead
As India grew closer and closer to a lead, England's impatience kept growing as the game approached tea. The two batters eventually removed the deficit, with Sundar hitting a six and a boundary that was followed by a loud cheer by the Indian crowd. Both of them reached their fifties as well just before tea with Jadeja unleashing the sword in Manchester as well. Jadeja also became only the 2nd player in Test history to score 5 fifty plus scores while batting at no.6 or lower.
India losing KL and Gill before lunch
Earlier, Day 5 of the 4th Test between England and India began with promise for the visitors but ended the opening session with them under pressure at 223/4 at lunch, after losing both set batters, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill. Resuming with a 174-run stand, India looked steady in their bid to draw the match. However, skipper Ben Stokes struck early, dismissing KL Rahul LBW in the 71st over with a low-bouncing delivery. Rahul, who fell short of a century, received a warm ovation but would be disappointed to not carry on.
Washington Sundar joined Shubman Gill, who despite a finger injury from a rising Stokes delivery, continued to show determination. Gill went on to score his 9th Test century and fourth of the series, equalling the record for most hundreds in a Test series by a captain alongside Don Bradman and Virat Kohli.
But just before lunch, Jofra Archer delivered a major blow by getting Gill caught behind. Ravindra Jadeja survived a dropped catch in the slips soon after, as India's hopes of saving the Test now rest on Jadeja and Sundar.

754 and out – Shubman Gill ends stunning series 20 runs short of Sunil Gavaskar's record
Shubman Gill may have scored just 11 runs in the second innings of the fifth Test, after scoring 21 in the first, which may not be noteworthy numbers but they have brought to an end a stunning series with the bat. Gill has ended the series with a tally of 754 runs, which is the second highest tally of all time for an Indian in any Test series, only behind Sunil Gavaskar's 774 against the mighty West Indies in a five-Test series in 1971. Gavaskar had played only four matches in that series, having made his debut only in the second Test. Gill, meanwhile, has achieved this feat on his debut as India's Test captain. He is also just the third Indian to score more than 700 runs in a single series after Gavaskar and his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had scored 712 runs in a five-Test series at home against England in 2023/24. Gill's tally is also the second highest for a captain in any Test series, only 56 runs behind the record of 810 held by the legendary Don Bradman, who had scored that against England at home in the 1936/37 Ashes. Conversely, it is the highest score by any Indian captain in a Test series by a margin of of 22 runs – Gavaskar held the record previous for the 732 he scored in the six-Test series against the West Indies in 1978/79. Gill fell in the first innings of the first Test after going for a single that was never there. In the second innings, Gill fell off the very first ball of the second session, being trapped in front of his stumps by an inswinger from Gus Atkinson. The only Tests in which Gill failed to score centuries in this series were both in London – the third Test at Lord's and the fifth Test at the Oval. Gill started the series by scoring a century on his captaincy debut. He scored 147 in his very first innings as the skipper, followed by a score of eight in the second innings. Gill then made merry in the second Test, scoring a record 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second as he powered India to a 336-run win at Edgbaston. He then could only manage scores of 16 and six in the third Test and 12 in the first innings of the fourth before grinding out 103 runs off 238 balls as part of a match-saving effort with KL Rahul. Rahul and Gill batted out nearly 70 overs after which unbeaten centuries by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar helped India draw the match. This was followed by the 21 and 11 he scored at the Oval.

Murali Sreeshankar continues strong form with win at Qosanov Memorial in Almaty
Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar claimed the title at the Qosanov Memorial, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meet, in Almaty on Saturday. The 26-year-old secured the top spot with a 7.94m jump, which came in his first effort of the competition. Janry Ubas of Philippines finished second with 7.53m, while Azerbaijan's Nazim Babayev ended third with a 7.48m leap. This is the third consecutive win for Sreeshankar since returning from a knee injury, which required surgery. In July, Sreeshankar had claimed wins at the Indian Open Athletics and at the Meeting Maia Cidade do Desporto in Maia, Portugal, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze-level meet. The Commonwealth Games silver medallist will be competing in Europe and Central Asia till August 14, for which the government has approved Rs 5.58 lakh.
