Expectations for Cowboys have changed drastically with Schottenheimer replacing McCarthy

USA Today09-07-2025
I'm usually a big believer in the betting markets and national odds makers but I'm having a tough time accepting the Cowboys are this big of long shots in 2025. Bottom 10 playoff odds? Are you kidding me? pic.twitter.com/ov23G9jirz
It's a positive vibes era for Cowboys Nation these days. A brand-new, player-friendly coaching staff is in place, morale around the Star has been boosted and an acclaimed rookie draft class is in place and ready to roll. The national media and local fanbase are at odds and a healthy, 'us versus them' attitude has been rostered.
Fresh starts have a way of instilling such feelings and it's one that hasn't been felt around these parts in five years. The year was 2020 and a certain Super Bowl-winning head coach named Mike McCarthy was hired to replace the stale Jason Garrett. McCarthy was handed a ready-made contender, and expectations were through the roof. So, it's fair to say the feelings of today are similar to that of the 2020 offseason. but expectations have changed considerably.
Even though Cowboys fans are optimistic, their expectations pale in comparison to what they were in 2020. Those McCarthy teams were touted as some as the most talented rosters since the Super Bowl years. They were seemingly already a contender under Garrett; they just couldn't figure out how to get over the postseason hump. That's what McCarthy was for.
It's important to remember, McCarthy wasn't brought in to get them more wins in the regular season. He was brought in to get them more wins in the postseason. It's what made his tenure such a massive failure. The Cowboys were repeatedly outcoached in the playoffs and their only success came against a lowly, eight-win Buccaneers team.
The scene for Schottenheimer is markedly different. Schottenheimer takes over a team that floundered through the previous season. Even before the Cowboys lost Dak Prescott for the second half of the season, they held a losing record that could've been worse. Poor performance, predictable play-calling and a windfall of injuries took their toll, and the Cowboys now enter 2025 as long shots to even make the playoffs, let alone make noise.
The world champion Philadelphia Eagles once again look to be the class of the NFL and the Washington Commanders, NFC East brethren, appear to be hard changing to join them at the top of the power rankings. Just finishing between the two in the final standings would constitute a win for Schottenheimer and that's likely where the Cowboys will have to finish if they want to make the playoffs.
It's safe to say the expectations are considerably lower for Schottenheimer than they were for McCarthy, but that's not to say patience will be as long. How McCarthy survived as long as he did is hard to explain. He didn't remotely approach the expectations placed on him when he was first hired. Will Schottenheimer be given the same grace?
Jerry Jones doesn't like to fire his head coaches before they've exhausted the terms of their deal, so Schottenheimer, like McCarthy, has that working in his favor. But McCarthy's Super Bowl pedigree and his three 12-win seasons bought him the benefit of the doubt. Schottenheimer won't be afforded those same benefits.
Even if a postseason appearance is a Vegas longshot, it's probably what the front office and the Cowboys fanbase expect from their new head coach in Year 1. To most outside analysts, a double-digit win total and close finish down the stretch would constitute victory. Playoffs or not. However much the two side differ in their expectations for the Cowboys this year, it's certainly a departure from where we were in 2020.
My, how the times have changed in Dallas.

Colin Cowherd Has a Problem With Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer's Backward Visor

National Football League Colin Cowherd Has a Problem With Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer's Backward Visor Published Aug. 5, 2025 12:23 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link A lot of people like to wear a hat backward, and sometimes even a visor. To most people, it's not a big deal. Again, to most people. "You know I don't like backwards hats. What's worse is a backward visor. That's a two-win team," Colin Cowherd said on Monday's edition of "The Herd" about Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer wearing a backward visor at a press conference. "I'm taking away four wins. When you sit in front of a podium, you're representing the Cowboys; you're representing Bank of America; you're representing a $12 billion corporation. I think you got to do better as a head coach than a visor backwards. "There's a reason that at country clubs and private clubs, you have to wear collared shirts and jackets. There's a reason for that. There's a standard. I don't want to look like a guy that's here to move my couch. I want you to do better than that. That's awful. That is so bad." It's a sentiment that Cowherd has previously expressed, including with Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. With regard to Redick, Cowherd said at the time that, "We can't just keep lowering our standards, or pretty soon, hat on backward becomes flip-flops and board shorts to work." If I have to be the mean guy that has to start the national dialogue on standards, so be it. … Go ahead. Standards are standards." ADVERTISEMENT Schottenheimer is entering his first season as the Cowboys' head coach after spending the previous two seasons as their offensive coordinator (2023-24) and the 2022 season as a coaching analyst. Dallas opens its 2025 preseason on the road on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams. Will Schottenheimer break out the visor? It's projected to be between the mid 60s and mid 70s in Inglewood, CA, where the Rams play, on Saturday. Chances are if the Dallas head coach indeed breaks one a backward visor, Cowherd will be punching air. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Report: Bettors are praying on the Saints' downfall more than any other team

These aren't the type of headlines you want to be reading in August, but it's where the New Orleans Saints are. An offseason of upheaval and several unconvincing seasons have forced the team into a rebuild they never wanted to engage. They have a new head coach with new assistants at almost every position group. They don't have a franchise quarterback. That might be the recipe for landing the top pick in the 2026 NFL draft. And that's a possibility bettors are buying in on. While the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants are also in the mix for teams expected to very, very bad this year, it's New Orleans drawing the most attention on the betting market. Per Mike Florio of NBC Sports, who cites data from DraftKings, "The Saints have drawn 46 percent of the bets and 52 percent of the handle. The Browns, in contrast, have 12 percent of the bets and 13 percent of the handle. The Giants, at 6-1, has 11 percent of the bets and 12 percent of the handle." Saints general manager Mickey Loomis is a proud man. The teams he's built have never lost enough games to pick first overall, and New Orleans hasn't picked top-five since 2006, after the Hurricane Katrina-impacted 2005 season ended with a 3-13 finish. His squad has only picked top-ten three times in his 22-year tenure as GM. But this year's forecast is dire. Kellen Moore is unproven as a head coach. Spencer Rattler didn't win any of his seven games last year but has clearly been a better option to start than 26-year old rookie Tyler Shough. The defense Dennis Allen built looked old and slow last season, and D.A. isn't around to call plays anymore. And the Saints face an exceptionally difficult start to the season. Their first four games include a road contest with the Buffalo Bills, Super Bowl favorites in the AFC, as well as three tough NFC West teams: at home against the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers, with a coast-to-coast trip to see the Seattle Seahawks. A 1-3 or 0-4 start isn't unlikely. Mathematically, very few teams start 0-2 and qualify for the playoffs. Losing most or all of those first four games might mean digging too deep of a hole for the Saints to climb back out of. And as we've seen here, a lot of bettors are counting on that being the case. It's on Moore and the team he's assembled this summer to prove them wrong.
