World Cup winner Varane backs ex-boss Ancelotti to lift Brazil
Ancelotti was named Brazil's first permanent foreign coach last week and will start in his new role on May 26 on a contract that runs through to next year's World Cup finals.
The five-times Champions League winning coach will lead the country into June's South American qualifiers, and 2018 World Cup winner Varane believes Ancelotti has the pedigree to reinvigorate the squad following recent struggles.
"What I can say is that in football, in national teams, it's about being at the top level with a very short period of time to prepare yourself to perform," Varane told Reuters on the sidelines of the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens.
"So it's a different challenge that you're facing from the day-to-day with a club.
"But I think if you're capable of winning trophies like the Champions League, and if you're capable of raising your level for big games, then you're capable of doing it anywhere, at any time.
"I think Carlo is a great coach. He has a lot of experience, so he knows how to prepare the players to perform at the right time.
"That's the difficult thing. You have to meet with history. Every time (at the World Cup) it's only one chance, so you can't miss many opportunities. I think at the top level he knows how to do it."
The former defender knows Ancelotti well after they shared two seasons at Real Madrid in the Italian's first spell in charge and together they won the Champions League in 2014, one of four continental crowns Varane collected at the Bernabeu.
Brazil are currently fourth in the standings in the South American preliminaries, 10 points adrift of bitter rivals Argentina, who have already secured their berth at next year's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
While the Brazilians remain likely to qualify despite their faltering form, Varane was confident Ancelotti could raise standards to ensure the team are competitive at the finals.
"If he goes there, he knows how to do it, how to prepare the players, feeling comfortable and confident enough because we are talking about Brazil," said Varane. "At that level the players have the quality, they just need to be together and confident."

With this amazing win, Ledecky expressed: ' I just knew it was close the whole way… There were times where I thought I was just going to break away. I was just happy I was up there.' Highlights of the race During the race, McIntosh had the lead with 100 meters left; however, Ledecky made her move in the final 50 meters and eventually won with a final time of 8:05.62 seconds. The race was the greatest 800-meter freestyle event by far. Surprisingly, Australia's Lani Pallister made an intense three-woman race, instead of a duel between Ledecky and McIntosh. With this, Pallister came in second with a final time of 8:05.98. McIntosh came in third place with a time of 8:07.29 seconds. The race has been exciting because the tables have been turned this year. Back in February 2024, McIntosh had defeated Ledecky in the 800-meter freestyle race. The Canadian swimmer was six seconds faster than Ledecky at the Southern Zone South Sectional Championships in Orlando, Florida. Ledecky and McIntosh have now secured their spots in the finals after winning their individual qualifying heats. Ledecky has claimed 14 Olympic medals in her swimming career—9 of them are gold medals. More so, McIntosh also made her name known at last year's Paris Olympics by clinching three golds and a silver. At the tournament, Ledecky also claimed gold in the 1,500 freestyle and a bronze in the 400-meter freestyle, in which McIntosh won gold. McIntosh also won the 200 IM and 200 fly. Both athletes have been chasing swimming records set by the iconic Michael Phelps, who won five individual gold medals at the 2007 World Championships. Gondomar, boyhood club of Jota and Silva, honour brothers with new kit
The boyhood club of Portuguese footballers Diogo Jota and Andre Silva have dedicated their kit for this season to the brothers who died in a car crash on July 3 in Spain. Fourth-tier Gondomar SC have imprinted pictures of Liverpool and Portugal forward Jota and his brother Silva, who played for Portuguese team Panafiel, on the front of their shirts. The top of the back of the shirts bears the two players' names under an infinity symbol. "More than a jersey, a tribute eternal," Gondomar SC, who play in the Campeonato de Portugal, said in a social media post. "Because football is more than victories and goals, it's legacy, it's family, it's love for our land. "Our new jersey brings in the great image of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, two sons of Gondomar who left us too soon, but who will live forever in the history of our club and our football. "Every time our athletes put on this jersey, it's like stepping on the field with them." Liverpool announced last month that their players will wear a "Forever 20" emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets this Premier League season. After consultation with Jota's family, his number 20 shirt will be retired across all levels of the Anfield club, including the women's and academy teams.
