Bing Crosby Stakes Sings At Del Mar On July 26

A talented nine horse field will race to reach the finish line first in the grade 1 Bing Crosby ... More Stakes at Del Mar Back in 1937, Bing Crosby opened a piece of heaven on earth down at old Del Mar. No one is quite sure if this crooning superstar realized he was creating a haven for the sport of Thoroughbred racing, but he likely had a pretty good idea this seaside oval would flourish. In fitting fashion, one of the top races of the summer meet is named in his honor. Garnering grade 1 status and offering a Breeders' Cup Sprint berth to the winner, this six-furlong dash over the Del Mar dirt has long provided season highlights and this year's edition looks to be more of the same. The 2025 Bing Crosby offers up a talented nine horse field that will have somebody singing at the end. Let's take a look at the entrants and provide a thought on each. Runners are listed by post position with trainer, jockey, and morning line. 1 Crazy Mason (Greg Sacco, Christopher Elliot 6-1 ) -Shipping from the East Coast, this son of Coal Front has won three of four starts this year. Two starts back he won the Carter Stakes at Aqueduct. Would it be Crazy to think he could ship and win??? His closing style could have him there at the end considering the front-end speed in the race. 2 Dr. Venkman (Mark Glatt, Antonio Fresu 4-1 )-This son of Ghostzapper has three wins and four seconds in eight lifetime starts. He has been the bridesmaid in both stats this year, but we think he is the one here. A stalking trip might just provide that trip to the circle. 3 Hejazi (Bob Baffert, Juan Hernandez 7-2 )- Nobody has won more Stakes races at Del Mar than Bob Baffert. He is not likely to add to that total here, but this New York-bred son of Bernardini can impact the race by contesting the early pace. Hejazi has two career wins, but has been in the money in eight of ten lifetime starts. 4 Smooth Crusein (Karen Headley, Kyle Frey 20-1 )- This three-year-old Florida-bred will be stepping up in class here. He ran against older horses in his last start and finished third in a four horse field at Santa Anita. This is a big ask for this son of Girvin and he can only hope for a Smooth trip. 5 World Record (Rodolphe Brisset, Flavien Prat 3-1 )- The speed of the speed in this one. Insanely fast early, his last two wins saw him on the lead with opening quarter miles that were 21 and change. If they leave this son of Gun Runner alone on the lead it will be over early. The home stretch at Del Mar will see plenty of excitement in the Bing Crosby Stakes on July 26 6 Roll on Big Joe (Robert Hess, Julien Leparoux 6-1 )- Grandson of Victory Gallop has four wins in five starts this year and was quite impressive in winning the grade 3 Kelly's Landing at Churchill Downs in his last start. In the money in fourteen of eighteen lifetime starts but has only managed one second in three starts at Del Mar. 7 Mbagnick (John Sadler, Armando Ayuso 5-1 )- After we figure out how to say this Chilean-bred's name we will decide if he has a real shot. John Sadler has saddled many winners at Del Mar, and this son of Practical Joke took'em gate to wire in winning his last start at this same distance on June 13. 8 Spirit of Makena (George Papapodromo, Abel Cedillo 20-1 )-This son of Ghostzapper won four of his first five career starts including two stakes victories. Injury sidelined him all of 2024 and he has a third-place finish in two starts this year but is winless since May of 2023. Coming back off such a layoff takes a lot of Spirit. The Bing and this field is a big asking. 9 Lovesick Blues (Librado Baracio, Geovani Franco 20-1 )-This California-bred is the veteran of the group with forty lifetime starts. Always a hard-knocker, this son of Grazen has been in the top three twenty-six times with eight wins. Although not likely to win, he is a horse that can be there at the end and pump up the exotic payouts.

A $100-million payday? Puka Nacua knows a strong 2025 could reap big rewards

Puka Nacua saw the numbers. So, no doubt, did Rams general manager Les Snead, and vice president Tony Pastoors, the team's senior executive in charge of negotiating contracts. When Garrett Wilson of the New York Jets this month signed a four-year extension that includes $90 million in guarantees, he became the latest young NFL receiver star to cash in before playing out his rookie contract. Nacua is in the third year of his rookie deal with the Rams. He will be eligible for an extension in the offseason. Read more: Rams open training camp: Analyzing their biggest concerns 'I try to do my best to stay completely present where my feet are,' Nacua said this week after the Rams' first practice, noting that he played in a high school All-Star game with Wilson. 'It's exciting to see guys, to push the envelope for the wide receiver game.' Nacua, a fifth-round draft pick in 2023, will earn just over $1 million this season, according to For the Rams, it ranks as one of the NFL's best bargains. Nacua, 24, became a breakout star in his first season, establishing several NFL rookie receiving records and making the Pro Bowl. Last season, despite sitting out five games because of a knee injury that he sustained during a preseason workout against the Chargers and then aggravated in the opener against the Detroit Lions, he caught 79 passes for 990 yards and three touchdowns. With Nacua ascending into the No. 1 receiver, the Rams moved on from veteran Cooper Kupp and signed three-time All-Pro Davante Adams. Quarterback Matthew Stafford will be sidelined through at least the first week of training camp because of back soreness. But on Wednesday, while working with veteran backup Jimmy Garoppolo, Nacua and Adams showed flashes of the excitement they are expected to generate for a team that will be regarded as a legitimate Super Bowl contender. During their brief time as teammates, Nacua said he has learned about body control, elusiveness, on-field awareness and how to maximize route-running leverage from Adams. 'He explains it so well in the meeting room,' Nacua said, 'so it makes it fun to watch tape and to be like, 'OK, how can I add some of these things to my toolbox?'' Adams' 'illusion of speed and lateral quickness' stand out, Nacua said. 'I wouldn't say there's a lot of people that can replicate some of the things that he can do,' Nacua said, 'but trying to understand the movement so I can add it to my game.' Nacua and Adams are the stars of a Rams receiving corps that also includes speedy Tutu Atwell, who is playing on a one-year $10-million contract, and second-year pro Jordan Whittington. As Nacua navigates his third training camp, he said he would be focused on improving his 'pre-practice preparation' as the Rams get ready for their Sept. 7 opener against the Houston Texans. 'I feel like I could wake up out of bed and get ready to roll and have no warmups,' Nacua said of his first two camps. 'I maybe didn't run as fast as Tutu when I woke up out of bed, but I feel like I could get out and just be ready to go. So … pre-practice preparation, so when I hit down the field, I know I can start rolling as soon as we get out here.' The Rams are currently in negotiations with running back Kyren Williams about a possible extension. But that deal, if it gets done, will not compare with those looming in 2026 and beyond. Read more: Matthew Stafford dealing with back soreness, will be limited at start of Rams training camp If Nacua remains injury free and he maintains or increases his production, he could have a potential megadeal in hand before 2026 training camp. Defensive lineman Kobie Turner also will be eligible for an extension. Edge rusher Jared Verse is another young star on track for a potential massive payday after the 2026 season. Nacua is not looking too far ahead as he gets his mind and body ready for the upcoming season. 'This will probably be the best that I feel for the rest of the year,' he joked. 'I enjoy these moments because they won't last too long, but I feel fantastic right now. 'Ready to roll.' Etc. Stafford was not on the field Wednesday. The 16-year veteran was working with trainers in other areas, McVay said. Stafford is not expected to practice until next week. 'I think that's the best thing in terms of being able to strengthen, be as strong, sturdy and feel as good as he can go,' McVay said of Stafford working away from on-field activities, 'As good as he can be for the time that we get him back out here on Monday." ... Former Rams center Brian Allen is attending camp and helping with the offensive line. ... The Rams are scheduled to hold a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 5 in Oxnard. NFL training camp tour 2025: From Cowboys to Bengals, check out our stories from the road

NFL training camps are finally open leaguewide, and Yahoo Sports senior NFL reporters Charles Robinson and Jori Epstein are taking their annual camp tours. Over the next few weeks, each will be visiting with different teams and hitting the biggest stories. We're collecting them all right here, ordered from most recent on down. An Arch Manning succession target for the Rams is very realistic with Matthew Stafford's clock ticking (July 24) LOS ANGELES — Realistically, everyone believes – including inside the Rams – that Matthew Stafford is deeply into the sunset portion of his NFL career. So much so, there's a feeling inside the franchise that if the Rams win the Super Bowl this season, Stafford is going to use that opportunity to retire, a la John Elway with the Denver Broncos in 1999, after he'd secured the second Super Bowl title that would ensure he was a first-ballot Hall of Famer. According to a team source, even Stafford himself has joked with staff that the Rams' acquisition of a second first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft from the Atlanta Falcons is a sign that L.A.'s brass expects him to hang it up after the 2025 season. But does that mean the Rams are also exploring Stafford replacements? [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] It's a complicated question. First and foremost, Stafford is still operating inside a Super Bowl window open for the Rams. The leadership both in the coaching staff and front office is steadfast in his ability — if fully healthy — to lead Los Angeles to one more title in the next two seasons. That said, it's clear there is a fixed vantage on the horizon, with Rams decision-makers knowing the next offseason is where they have to start moving toward a succession plan. Most likely toward a very young player who can grow with Sean McVay and spend an elongated period attached at the hip. One prominent name that surfaces inside this ideology is Texas quarterback Arch Manning. — Charles Robinson As Bengals open training camp without Trey Hendrickson and Shemar Stewart, Ja'Marr Chase sees 'a lot of feelings involved' (July 23) CINCINNATI — The Bengals' contract dispute with Hendrickson is within the realm of standard contract disagreements. Hendrickson is coming off consecutive 17.5-sack seasons, leading the league in sacks last year even as he turned 30 in December. Club and player agree that Hendrickson has earned a raise from the $16 million cash payout he's due on the final year of his existing deal. The value of that deal is trickier, particularly for a franchise that has long resisted multi-year guarantees. The Bengals broke that trend with Burrow and again gave multiyear guarantees to receiver Ja'Marr Chase this spring. Quarterbacks tend to encounter different extension parameters, so Chase's deal is more relevant to Hendrickson's case. Hendrickson and his camp will argue: Did you see those league-best 35 sacks in two years? The Bengals, meanwhile, will argue that Chase, 25, is the best at his position in the prime of his career … and even as they value Hendrickson, they don't consider him in his prime age nor the best at his position. Chase diagnosed the acrimony a year after his own training camp hold-in. 'It was a lot of feelings involved, even though it's not supposed to be involved,' Chase told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday. 'I feel like feelings are definitely involved when they're giving away their money.' — Jori Epstein Is Jared Goff underrated? Lions embracing their 'not too flashy' QB as offense shifts out of Ben Johnson's hands (July 22) ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Amon-Ra St. Brown understands the public perception. The wide receiver doesn't agree with it, but he doesn't expect it to change. Jared Goff, the 2016 first overall draft pick whom the Los Angeles Rams would later trade to the Detroit Lions, is underrated. St. Brown believes it. 'I think he's been underrated his whole career and I don't think that'll ever go away,' St. Brown told Yahoo Sports from training camp practice. 'You look at a guy like Josh Allen: He's big, can run, crazy arm strength. You look at a guy like Lamar [Jackson]: fast, one of the best running quarterbacks you've ever seen, does stuff on the field that only he can do. 'You look at Patrick Mahomes: His arm angles, the throws he makes, just unconventional, his ability to win big games.' And Goff? 'You look at a guy like Jared, I mean he's not too flashy,' St. Brown says of his quarterback. 'But he's consistent.' — Jori Epstein Cowboys training camp fight? Owner Jerry Jones opens up by taking jabs at Micah Parsons, Dak Prescott and others (July 21) OXNARD, Calif. — At 11:04 a.m. Pacific Time and beneath an uncharacteristically cloudy Southern California sky, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gradually ambled down a corridor toward his annual training camp-opening microphone. Trailed by parts of the team's brain trust — including his son Stephen and new head coach Brian Schottenheimer — Jerry walked his long, straight path toward the dais until the journey to his seat necessitated a left turn. And boy did he ever take it. In what struck a chord as one of the more strained and seemingly unnecessary laundry list of sideways comments about several of his core players, Jerry took an unquestionably hard left turn to start a season — taking a sliding scale of passive-aggressive digs at edge defender Micah Parsons, quarterback Dak Prescott, cornerback Trevon Diggs and offensive tackle Terence Steele. Along the way, Jerry and son Stephen also revealed that neither has spoken to Parsons' agent David Mulugheta about a contract extension, with Jerry at several points seeming to suggest he had already worked out a deal directly with his star edge rusher during a face-to-face meeting last March. — Charles Robinson 'Don't act like we're bringing in a scrub': Why Lions believe they'll rebound from brain drain (July 21) ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Success, rather than complacency, was the demise of the 2024 Detroit Lions. The Chicago Bears hired Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as their head coach while the New York Jets hired defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to lead their franchise. Early in the summer, the Lions also lost four-time Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow to retirement. No one disputes the talent and foundation each of the three brought the club, or the work it will take to replace them. But the think tank mentality means the Lions aren't starting from scratch building new schemes and playbooks to match their play-callers. The play-callers aren't starting from scratch, either. 'It's not like we're going from Ben and AG to some coaches that don't know anything,' wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown told Yahoo Sports. 'Don't act like we're bringing in a scrub. 'These coaches know ball.' — Jori Epstein Mike Williams' abrupt retirement has Chargers searching for a wideout to fill a big hole (July 20) EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — A week into the Los Angeles Chargers' training camp, an unexpected hole has quickly become a coaching staff and front office focal point. It's a void that measures 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, was previously inhabited by veteran wideout Mike Williams, and now needs a sizable presence to step into an opportunity. That was the primary takeaway after visiting Chargers camp Saturday, just days after Williams abruptly retired on the first day of practice and pushed the franchise to start mulling limited options. It's a roster concern that exacerbates an early — but somewhat typical — camp theme for many teams: The defense is ahead of the offense; the installation process is just now getting traction; and conversations are intensifying behind closed doors about roster questions that will need to be answered from inside the current depth chart or supplemented with an outside addition. For the Chargers, nothing represents that reality more than the starting 'X' receiver spot, which not only lost Williams' prototypical size and strength at the position, but also his baked-in chemistry with quarterback Justin Herbert, whom Williams played with from 2020 to 2023. All of that drove Los Angeles to reunite with Williams in free agency last March, bringing some important depth and options to the position alongside rising young star Ladd McConkey. Unfortunately, with Williams battling lingering health issues from the spring, the reliable free-agent signing ended up being the least reliable development in the first week of camp. So what now? — Charles Robinson
