Bengal man facing Assam NRC heat shows parents' vote proof

Jalpaiguri: Cooch Behar resident Uttam Kumar Brajabashi, who received an NRC notice from the Assam govt asking him to prove his Indian citizenship by July 15 or face deportation, produced documents on Monday which showed that his parents, Narendranath Brajabashi and Sabitri, were voters in Dinhata.
In Jan, 50-year-old Brajabashi received a notice from Assam govt accusing him of being an illegal immigrant who entered India through the Bangladesh border between 1966 and 1971. The notice claimed Brajabashi was unable to present required documents during police verification.
North Bengal development minister Udayan Guha, who has stepped in to help Brajabashi, said on Monday: "Brajabashi was born in 1975. Surprisingly, the Assam govt asked for his documents from 1966 to 1971.
We have asked him to not pay heed to the notice. We will stand by him and provide him support."

A Rajbanshi from Sadiyaler Kuthi in Dinhata's Chowdhury Haat, Brajabashi has claimed he had never left Cooch Behar in his life or travelled outside Bengal. "Brajabashi is an Indian Bengali from Bengal. How can a man born in 1975 have documents from before that? This is ridiculous and unacceptable," he said.
Trinamool Congress, in a statement, said: "The BJP-governed Assam govt has now sent an NRC notice to Uttam Kumar Brajabashi, a man who has never even visited Assam. He possesses documents showing that his father's name was included in the 1966 electoral roll. How does Assam govt send such an undemocratic notice to one of our Rajbanshi brothers."

BJP may seek over 35 seats from AIADMK in 2026
COIMBATORE: With the AIADMK and BJP already switching on to election mode, the saffron party is mulling to demand over 35 seats, which is almost double the number they got in the 2021 election, from the Dravidian major. Confirming it, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, during a recent election campaign that he started from Coimbatore, praised the performance of the BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan (Coimbatore South). BJP functionaries said Palaniswami's statement was an indirect hint that Vanathi would contest from the constituency in the upcoming election. If confirmed, it will be the third time that Vanathi Srinivasan – national president of BJP Mahila Morcha – will be contesting from the Coimbatore South. 'I consider Edappadi Palaniswami's praise as recognition of my performance as an MLA,' said Vanathi, adding, she hopes that she did significant work in her constituency.

RJD says INDIA bloc okay with Tejashwi Yadav as CM face
PATNA: There is no disagreement whatsoever among the coalition partners on Tejashwi being projected as the chief ministerial candidate for the Bihar Assembly elections, RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav said on Saturday. Yadav made the announcement after attending a meeting of the INDIA bloc held to discuss seat sharing for the elections as they aim to wrest power from the BJP-led NDA. The fifth meeting of the INDIA bloc's coordination committee for Bihar polls was held at the official residence of RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. Following the meeting, Tejashwi told the media that the discussion on seat sharing had begun and that everything would be settled amicably. He emphasised that there was a lack of law and order in Bihar. The RJD leader alleged that the state government did not have a clear vision as it was announcing initiatives he had already implemented. 'We'll make bigger announcements in the coming days. The alliance has a big vision for the state,' he claimed. The INDIA bloc comprises RJD, Congress, CPI (ML), CPI, CPM, and VIP. While the induction of AIMIM into the INDIA bloc appears a remote possibility with RJD MP Manoj Jha advising Asaduddin Owaisi not to contest Bihar polls, former union minister Pashupati Kumar Paras-led Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party is also apparently waiting for a green signal for its entry into the alliance.

While the BJP continues to command a grip on the Patel vote bank, bolstered by its top leadership comprising influential Patidar figures, emerging challenges from the AAP and internal lobbying within the Congress are beginning to shift the political discourse.
