Bryan Kohberger apparently agrees to a plea deal in Idaho college student murders, victim's family says
The family learned of the apparent deal in a letter from prosecutors, the Idaho Statesman and ABC News reported, citing the letter.
'This agreement ensures that the defendant will be convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison, and will not be able to put you and the other families through the uncertainty of decades of post-conviction appeals,' read the letter, signed by Moscow Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson, according to the Statesman.
Kohberger, 30, was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and burglary in the 2022 killing of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves at an off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho.
'Appears there is a plea deal that has been offered and accepted,' said Shanon Gray, an attorney for the Goncalves family.
Additional details were not immediately available.
'We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho,' the Goncalves family said in a Facebook post about the apparent agreement. 'They have failed us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected.'
Kohberger's trial was scheduled to begin Aug. 11 in Boise.
Attorneys for Kohberger, a doctoral student in criminology at Washington State University in Pullman, have said he was out driving alone when the students were killed.
They attended the University of Idaho, just across the state line from Pullman.
The bodies of Chapin, 20; Kernodle, 20; Mogen, 21; and Goncalves, 21; were found Nov. 13, 2022. Authorities linked Kohberger to the killing through cell phone data, security camera video and DNA from on a knife sheath discovered at the crime scene.

Holiday scam victims sent to North York Moors National Park office
A number of tourists turned up at a National Park's head office expecting to find a holiday cabin after falling victim to a Facebook North York Moors National Park Authority confirmed that those targeted by the booking fraud were directed to their headquarters in Helmsley instead of genuine fake website offered people a half-price stay in a holiday cabin with the postcode of the park offices, but uses the name of a real cabin based elsewhere in the Park staff received several calls and emails from victims of the scam and some customers even travelled to the Grade II-listed former vicarage. The authority's Nina Beadle said: "We've had several emails and phone calls from people who had booked, and wanted to check the address."Someone turned up last week who had booked a couple of days, and the postcode brings you to our head office."Amy Bennett, from Heckmondwike in West Yorkshire, booked a trip to the cabin after she saw an advert offering it at half-price on a Facebook reel. "I realised something was wrong as soon as I received the confirmation email as it listed details on the site which just didn't match what I was expecting," Ms Bennett said. "I researched a bit further and the address didn't exist, so I contacted my bank within 10 minutes of booking."In her confirmation email, Ms Bennett was told the accommodation was located on Runway Hollow Lane, near Upper Flixton, North Yorkshire Moors - a street and village which do not Bennett said she was initially denied a refund by her bank, who told her to contact the holiday company directly. She disputed this and sent information on the scam, and was then refunded the money. The owner of the company that owns the genuine cabin said the scam had been going on since Broadbent, director of The Wilding Airfield near Peterborough, added: "It seems to be one operator who has stolen our images and opened a number of fraudulent websites using domain name variations on the theme of our business name."They are using sponsored adverts across Facebook and Instagram to access their target audience."Mr Broadbent said the company had been receiving numerous calls per week from people who had been scammed."We are getting two to three people contact us every week since early May who are either making us aware of the scam, or who have made a booking and realised their situation," he said. "We really sympathise with everyone being defrauded and very much hope that someone is able to stop the individuals in their criminal activity." The North York Moors National Park said its visitors had also been targeted by a QR code scam at authority-run car attached fake "pay by phone" stickers to signs and machines in locations such as Newton under Roseberry, Grosmont and Goathland."Last week, one of our car park wardens noticed something didn't look right with one of our car parking signs," said Ms Beadle."After checking other locations, she spotted that a QR code had been stuck over the logo that usually appears in that space, and on scanning the code, realised this was a scam. "In one case, a fraudulent QR code was replaced within 24 hours of the first sticker being removed."The fraudulent stickers are professionally made and appear to have been carefully designed to specifically target the National Park's signage."Ms Beadle urged visitors to pay at the car park machines, or double-check where a QR code directs to before entering any personal information."If something doesn't look quite right - perhaps a QR code that seems out of place or isn't referenced elsewhere on the signage - don't use it."Always visit the genuine Pay by Phone website from your browser, or download the Pay by Phone app direct from your phone's app store."Listen to highlights from North Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North or tell us a story you think we should be covering here.

Brit gang ‘who threatened to behead Bella Culley' told her ‘we know where your family are'…as two-word SOS text revealed
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A BRITISH gang threatened to behead drug mule suspect Bella Culley and her family in a chilling warning to the pregnant 18-year-old. Bella was shown a horrifying video of an execution by the evil traffickers which forced the teen to send her loved ones a two-word SOS text, her lawyer has claimed. She denies knowingly importing drugs worth £200,000 into the former Soviet state of Georgia as she continues to claim she was in fear of life when she flew from Bangkok in May. Trainee nurse Bella - who got pregnant on her Far East trip - claimed the gang also threatened to harm her parents and 16-year-old brother after claiming they knew where they lived. In a desperate two word plea she texted her family, 'HELP ME', after being 'branded' on the arm with an iron as a warning. Bella from Billingham, County Durham, says a bag containing cannabis was checked in under her name by a gang member. Her frantic family launched a missing person hunt in Thailand after she vanished on holiday but she turned up under arrest 4,000 miles away. Her Georgian lawyer Malkhaz Salakaia claimed the gang terrorised the teenager into becoming a mule. She felt queasy and almost fainted but they still forced her to watch it Malkhaz Salakaia He told The Sun: 'They told her: 'We know the addresses of your parents, we know where your 16 year old brother is.' 'They made her watch a video of a man being decapitated and told her: 'If you don't do as you are told, this is what is going to happen to you and your family.' 'She felt queasy and almost fainted but they still forced her to watch it." Bella - who wept in court on Monday as she appeared with her baby bump visible for the first time - has stressed the British father of her child was not a gang member. Brit 'drug smuggler' Bella Culley 'starving' in ex-Soviet hell prison - as she reveals pregnancy craving to celeb lawyer And she went on to describe the horror of her 'branding' to Mr Salakaia. He told The Sun: 'On the inside of her right arm there is a mark from this coercion. 'She was, so to say, branded - a hot iron was pressed on her arm. 'She was forced to do this - there was both psychological and physical pressure, the trace of which is still visible. 'As to her connection with this group, she knew several of them - they are British. 'At first she knew one, and then through him met the others. However, we have grounds to assume that this group also had local accomplices, including in Thailand.' Mr Salakaia said by the time Bella managed to send a desperate text to her family, it was too late for them to stop her disastrous journey to Georgia. 8 Bella Culley went on holiday to Thailand and wound up in handcuffs in Eastern Europe Credit: Facebook 8 Cannabis was found wrapped in air-tight bags in Bella's luggage, police said Credit: East2West 8 Mr Salakaia said: 'Bella sent an SMS to her family asking for help, saying: HELP ME, but by the time the family reacted it was too late 'The instruction, or rather threat, she was given consisted of the following: 'You will take this luggage and carry it from point A to point B, to this or that country, or we will kill you. 'There is no talk of any potential reward or deal — Bella was simply forced to do this. 'The speculation that one of them is the father of Bella's child does not correspond to the truth - I categorically deny this. There is no connection. 'I cannot say whether the father of the child knows about Bella's situation.' Mr Salakaia told how Bella tried in vain to raise the alarm - but discovered to her horror that Thai cops she tried to tip off were linked to the gang. He said: 'There was a very alarming episode while she was still in Bangkok. Bella seized a moment to go to some policemen - there were three of them, standing on the street. 'She told them: 'I have a problem, this is happening, there is pressure on me, help me.' 'They spoke with her for 20 minutes and then returned her exactly to the same people she had run away from. 'This allows the simplest conclusion - that this group had things arranged with the local police.' She was forced to do this - there was both psychological and physical pressure, the trace of which is still visible Malkhaz Salakaia Mr Salakaia said Bella did not see the suitcase containing 31lb of cannabis in vacuum-sealed bags until a customs officer in Georgian capital Tbilisi showed it to her. The teenager had no idea where Tbilisi was and no idea why she was there, he said. Bella, in a pink t-shirt with her hair in a bun, burst into tears at a court appearance on Monday where she was supported by her father Niel (ckd), 39, aunt Kerrie and grandad William Culley. Mr Salakaia said Bella - who was refused bail on Monday - will deny drug trafficking charges which carry a minimum sentence of 15 years in jail. Bella - who says she is happy with conditions at tough No5 Women's Penitentiary on the outskirts of Tbilisi - is next due in court on July 10. 8 Bella in court last month Credit: East2West
