Its elevation to university status is seen as a boost to the region's academic infrastructure, offering expanded opportunities for higher studies and research.
Highlighting the academic possibilities ahead, Prof. Roy said the geographical proximity of Gurucharan University and Assam University, both located in Silchar, could foster academic collaboration. "This is a rare opportunity for synergy between two major institutions in the same district," he noted, adding that success would depend on the "active and energetic cooperation" of faculty, staff, and students.
The university is expected to begin its first academic session under the new structure later this year.

Oil executives brush aside Trump's tariff threat on Russian crude oil

Indian refinery executives see US President Donald Trump's threat to impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russia as a negotiating tactic, with little real-world implication for global oil markets or India's imports of Russian crude. The oil market barely reacted to Trump's assertion on Tuesday, with Brent trading around $69 per barrel, similar to levels seen over past week. Refinery executives said if implemented, the proposed tariff could effectively shut Russia out of the global oil market, pushing prices to $120 per barrel or more, derailing Trump's own low-energy-price agenda and fuelling global inflation. Russia exports about 4.5-5.0 million barrels per day (mbd) of crude oil, roughly 5 per cent of total global demand. In addition, it exports about 2 mbd of refined products. Conversely, if India and China were targeted with 100 per cent tariffs for continuing to buy Russian oil, the resulting spike in US import costs from these countries could burden American consumers and prove politically difficult for Trump to manage, executives said. "This whole tariff game is about Trump trying to strike deals with countries, including Russia, not about disrupting energy trade or dealing with high inflation at home," an executive said. Another executive said Trump's warning was just a ploy to induce seriousness in negotiations with Russia, whose leader Vladimir Putin has been following a dual-track strategy-engaging with Trump over the phone and talking of a peace deal, while simultaneously hammering Ukraine with missiles and drones.

Malaysia controls AI chip exports as US targets China smuggling

Synopsis Companies must notify Kuala Lumpur 30 days before exporting, especially if misuse is suspected. TIL Creatives Malaysian authorities said in March that they would tighten regulations on the country's burgeoning data center industry, which relies on chips from the likes of Nvidia Corp. Malaysia will now require permits for exports of high-performance US artificial intelligence chips, suggesting the government is seeking to clamp down on potential diversion of the sensitive components to places like immediately, individuals and companies must notify Kuala Lumpur at least 30 days prior to exporting or shipping such hardware, Malaysia's trade and industry ministry said Monday. They must inform the agency if they know or 'have reasonable grounds' to suspect the items will be misused or used for restricted activities. Malaysia 'will not tolerate the misuse of Malaysia's jurisdiction for illicit trading activities,' the ministry said. Kuala Lumpur has come under increasing pressure from Washington — which has effectively banned the sale of advanced AI chips to China since 2022 — to halt the suspected flow of those parts to China via intermediaries in Malaysia. Malaysian authorities said in March that they would tighten regulations on the country's burgeoning data center industry, which relies on chips from the likes of Nvidia Corp. The new permit requirements aim to 'close regulatory gaps,' according to the ministry's statement, while Malaysia 'undertakes further review' of the potential inclusion of AI chips to a national list of items covered by the Strategic Trade Act. The ministry did not immediately respond to questions about whether the controls came at Washington's urging. Semiconductor sales to Malaysia also are a focal point of a court case in neighboring Singapore, where prosecutors charged three men with defrauding customers about the ultimate destination of AI servers — originally shipped from the island nation to Malaysia — that may have contained advanced Nvidia chips. Malaysia said in March that its investigation into the matter hadn't uncovered evidence of such shipments, and that the country will continue to monitor for possible fraud. Nvidia has not been accused of any wrongdoing in Singapore's investigation. Malaysia is a key part of the AI supply chain, home to many facilities used for developing and deploying AI models. American companies including Oracle Corp. are massively expanding their data center footprints in the country, which saw an increase in imports of crucial components this year — particularly in April, the month before the US was expected to start requiring licenses to ship AI chips to Malaysia and many other Donald Trump's administration decided not to move forward with that policy in May, though officials have since drafted a separate regulation that would mandate such approvals for AI chip shipments to Malaysia and Thailand in particular — an effort that seeks to crack down on suspected semiconductor smuggling into China, Bloomberg has reported. That rule is not yet finalized and could still change. Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang has said there's 'no evidence' of AI chip diversion, in general remarks that didn't touch on any particular country. In response to earlier Bloomberg queries about the potential US curbs, Malaysia's trade ministry said that it welcomes dialogue with the US and other nations to 'clarify any misunderstandings,' while also warning that unilateral restrictions could disrupt legitimate trade and hamper ministry — which, like many others in Asia, is currently hammering out a trade deal with US officials — added that 'all matters related to Malaysia-US bilateral trade are interlinked, each having its own unique role in the current trade negotiations.'

Was Epstein a Mossad agent? 'Vicious wave of slander and lies,' says ex-Israeli PM

Bennet's denial followed recent remarks by right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson, who claimed — without evidence — that Epstein may have been working on behalf of Israeli intelligence read more Rumours of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein being a former Mossad agent have been floating around ever since Tucker Carlson triggered discussions about the unfounded claim. Now, former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has rejected the allegations, describing them as 'a vicious wave of slander and lies' against Israel. 'The accusation that Jeffrey Epstein somehow worked for Israel or the Mossad running a blackmail ring is categorically and totally false,' Bennet said, adding, 'There's a vicious wave of slander and lies against my country and my people, and we just won't take it anymore.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Jeffrey Epstein, a wealthy American financier, was first charged with sex offences in 2006 after the parents of a 14-year-old girl told police that he had molested their daughter at his Florida home. Ever since then, he has been fighting legal battles in a complicated turn of events due to his links with US President Donald Trump. The Justice Department and FBI said in a memo made public earlier this month that there is no evidence that the disgraced financier kept a 'client list' or was blackmailing powerful figures. What did Tucker Carlson say? Bennet's denial followed recent remarks by right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson, who claimed — without evidence — that Epstein may have been working on behalf of Israeli intelligence. Carlson made the comments at a conservative conference, suggesting Epstein's activities could have been part of a foreign blackmail operation. Allegations of ties between Epstein and Israeli intelligence have circulated for years, largely fueled by Epstein's association with media mogul Robert Maxwell and his daughter, Ghislaine Maxwell, as well as meetings with former Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Some reports also speculated a link between Epstein and Israeli intelligence due to shared connections with the Maxwells. 'Credible Epstein files should be released' The Epstein case is taking Trump's popularity down by a smidge, with the MAGA backers pushing the president to release files related to the case. Trump said Tuesday the US Justice Department should release all 'credible' information from its probe into Epstein. 'The attorney general has handled that very well,' the Republican leader said of Pam Bondi, who leads the Justice Department, when he was asked about the case at the White House. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Trump repeated his claim that the Epstein files were 'made up' by his Democratic predecessors in the White House – even though he said multiple times during the election campaign that he would 'probably' release them.
