In 1985, Asmara opened as one of the first East African restaurants in the East Bay. Since then, the Ethiopian and Eritrean food scene — along with its multi-generational population — has flourished along the wandering coast of the eastern span of the Bay Bridge. Largely concentrated along Telegraph Avenue, the East Bay is the region's epicenter of East African grub, delivering an impressive array of diasporic classics that are historically vegan-friendly.
With more than forty years' worth of offerings, there's certainly no shortage of spots where you can score a smorgasbord of injera-plated, berbere-spiced proteins and veggies — awaze tibs (spiced lamb), shiro wat (chickpea stew), dulet (minced liver or beef).

In a recent interview, the 54-year-old actor opened up about how the latest entry in the Dexter franchise came to be, while also naming the person who pitched its creation in the first place. While speaking with The Guardian's Stuart Heritage, Michael C. Hall noted that he was the one who 'casually floated' the idea for the Dexter: Resurrection series. Talking about how he contributed to Resurrection's creation, the Six Feet Under alum stated, 'The conversation started as a result of my saying, 'What if he didn't die?' I can't take credit for the whole scope of what we're up to, but it was a notion that I casually floated. What if the end of New Blood was something that enabled Dexter to relinquish some burden that he'd been carrying for a long time?' The actor then shed light on what motivated him to participate in the Dexter: Resurrection series, despite the titular character's supposed passing in Dexter: New Blood. Hall cited the reasons as, 'time passing, perspective shifting, recognising what a wonderful thing it is to collaborate with this family.' He also realized 'that how New Blood seemingly ended could be a way to move the character into a place he hadn't quite earned until then.' Hall's menacing serial killer seemingly met his end in Dexter: New Blood, with the series' conclusion insinuating that Harrison, Dexter's son, was the one who claimed his father's life by shooting him. However, with the character making a surprise comeback in the Dexter: Resurrection series, Hall explained his return by saying, 'Well, you know, he didn't get shot in the head.' Dexter: Resurrection premiered its first two episodes on Paramount+ with Showtime on July 11, with the remaining eight episodes of the series set to release on a weekly basis. Sean 'Diddy' Combs' Sentencing Date Set For Fall
A sentencing date has been set for Sean 'Diddy' Combs following his federal conviction. According to CNN, the 55-year-old will learn his fate on Oct. 3, 2025, after being found guilty on two federal counts of transporting women across state lines for the purpose of prostitution. The decision, made on Tuesday (July 8), came after Combs' legal team requested an expedited hearing process from Judge Arun Subramanian, asking for a September date, the aforementioned date before coming to an agreement. Combs faces up to 10 years in prison on each count. As reported by Rolling Stone, his defense team is reportedly pushing for the minimum sentence of 21 to 27 months behind bars. The prosecution, however, said the sentencing guidelines called for 51 to 63 months imprisonment, and noted it would likely be seeking an even longer sentence. Judge Subramanian has previously noted that the time Combs has already spent in behind bars will count towards his final sentence. The Harlem native has been jailed since his initial arrest in September 2024. Judge Subramanian denied the defense team's request for the Hip-Hop producer to be released on bail until sentencing. 'It is impossible for the defendant to demonstrate by clear and convincing evidence that he poses no danger,' relayed Judge Subramanian, per The Guardian. 'At trial, the defense conceded the defendant's violence in personal relationships, saying 'it happened' in relation to Cassie Ventura and Jane,' he continued. 'This highlights a disregard for the rule of law and a propensity of violence.' After the Bad Boy Records founder was found guilty of the lesser charges and acquitted of the more serious racketeering and sex trafficking charges, many celebrated the news. Celebrities, including Tiny Harris and Boosie Badazz, made exclamations on social media, while some fans gathered outside the courthouse, spraying baby oil. 'I feel incredible. I feel good,' shared Sean Combs' mother, Janice Combs, after the verdict. 'First thing I'm gonna do is hug my Pops,' added the Grammy winner's son, Christian Combs. Hulk Hogan Opening Huge Sports Bar Near Madison Square Garden
Hulk Hogan is expanding his business to a familiar spot. Madison Square Garden is like a second home to Hulk Hogan, so much so he's now reportedly starting a new business venture right nearby. According to Page Six, the WWE Hall of Famer is part of a team opening a new sports bar across from famous New York City venue. Advertisement The sports bar is set with a Hulk Hogan theme. It came as an idea from the mind of Rich Rosen, a New York nightlife veteran who owns the spot at 461 8th Avenue, on the corner of 31st Street. Rosen told Page Six that he specifically sought out Hogan due to his previous history with MSG, which includes his first WWE Championship win against The Iron Sheik in 1984. He initially approached Hogan with his pitch at an autograph signing. Rosen Recalls His Encounter With Hogan 'I basically waited 5 hours on line to get two seconds with Hulk Hogan,' Rosen said. 'I came with an 8″ by 11″ glossy picture of Madison Square Garden. And in the picture is our [storefront]… walked up to Hulk, I dropped the picture in front of him.' From there, Rosen pointed to MSG and the adjacent bar, telling Hogan, 'That's my [storefront,] that's the Garden, and you're my new partner.' Rosen subsequently handed out his business card, which Hogan used to call him about the proposition four days later. Eventually, the parties reached a licensing deal. This means that while Hogan doesn't have direct ownership in the project, his name will be used in it. Advertisement At 9000 sq/ft, the sports bar is reportedly worth $7 million, with a wall of windows facing Madison Square Garden. The bar is called Slam. It will also have three floors, including a rooftop bar, upon its planned opening in the fall season. Inside Slam, patrons can see a variety of Hulk Hogan memorabilia as well as screens playing his greatest moments. Hogan's beer brand, Real American Beer, will also be served. Similarly, Hogan himself is expected to be a regular fixture at the NYC spot.
