I love that travel constantly rewires your perspective. You're not just seeing the world, you're stepping into other people's stories, learning how they live, eat, celebrate and survive. Every journey becomes a lesson in empathy and curiosity, and as a travel storyteller, you get to bottle that feeling and pass it on to others.
I've been fortunate that my job has taken me around the globe. This year alone, I've set foot on all seven continents, from snorkelling in Antarctica to working on rhino conservation projects in South Africa, to filming a food series in the Philippines.
But the biggest pinch-me moment of my travel career, was finding out I'd won a travel competition just like this one. I was about to be paid to do what I love most: sharing stories while exploring the world. That moment changed everything. I'll never forget hearing the words 'you've won' and knowing, right then and there, that my life was about to change.

Why do humans do what they do and how do we differ across the globe? What makes one destination superior to another and what are we doing to take better care of it? Is a $20,000 a night villa really any better than a $500 a night villa (and what kind of industry do I need to get into to think nothing of shelling out for the former)?
Not only does my job enable me to keep exploring, experiencing and answering these all-important questions, I'm thrilled that I have an opportunity to then share my 'findings' with readers who might then feel inspired to break out of their own comfort zones and give something new a try.
At the top of my pinch me bucket-list travel moments since I joined the Escape team? Hiking with my best friend in Antarctica, shearing sheep (with garden scissors, no less) with nomads in the Mongolian steppe, and learning to waltz, clad in an over-the-top rental gown, at a Viennese ball.

What I love most about working as a travel creator and writer is the way it forces me to be fully present. You can't drift off when you're caught in a snowstorm, snowboarding a vertical drop off Lone Peak in Big Sky, Montana. Or when you're tracing centuries of stories through the ancient city of Bukhara in Uzbekistan. Travel writing asks me to slow down and observe, while moving quickly to capture fleeting moments before they disappear.
The biggest pinch-me moment? Swimming alongside a whale shark off the coast of Exmouth in Western Australia, only to be blindsided from below by a humpback whale and its calf. Nothing prepares you for that kind of awe.
This job is not just about seeing the world; it's about crafting stories that make people feel something. If a reader sees a destination differently because of something I've written, that's everything. But most of all, the people I meet anchor my experiences. I love to be immersed in conversation with strangers and shaping the stories I craft by meeting the people who occupy a place. Next stop: Nepal.

My favourite tools of the trade are the globe of the world that sits on my desk and the 2m-wide map on my wall at home. Every day I study one or other to locate where the Escape team is travelling or to familiarise myself with the next destination we're going to visit or write about.
Last year, ahead of a springtime sailing around the Med to review the luxury cruise ship Regent Seven Seas Grandeur, I pinpointed Ephesus in Izmir, Turkey. My visit was a fascinating lesson on religion and civilisation and I marvelled – as I always do – that I was learning about history in such a meaningful way and as part of my job.
I've worked at Escape for more than a decade and still every day feels like an adventure. We're now on the lookout for new talent to add a Roaming Travel Reporter to the team. If you have amazing video skills – or if you have a child, grandchild, family member or friends whose skills meet the job description – apply now!

If I had a dollar for every time someone said, 'You have the best job in the world', I'd be splurging on avocado toast more often. And they're absolutely right.
Experiences I never imagined possible in a lifetime have become my actual job description: plunging into the icy waters of Antarctica, dancing the night away at Rio Carnival, skiing the slopes of glitzy St Moritz, galloping alongside Argentinian gauchos, glamping in the Sahara Desert, playing games with geishas in Kyoto, riding the rails to Machu Picchu, bathing rescued elephants in northern Thailand, spotting leopards on a South African safari, driving vintage cars through the streets of Havana, and staying in the world's best hotel on the shores of Lake Como.
The best bit? It's the locals you get to meet along the way – the hoteliers, chefs, architects, artists, winemakers, producers, tour guides and taxi drivers who want to share the place they love with the world.
Getting paid to creatively capture these experiences in words, photos and videos feels like winning life's lotto.

Tyra Banks makes shocking confession about ‘disgusting and erotic' addiction
Don't miss out on the headlines from TV. Followed categories will be added to My News. Tyra Banks knows how to pick 'em. The supermodel revealed her 'disgusting and erotic' habit of popping pimples and picking dirt from other people's toes during Thursday's episode of US show Today With Jenna & Friends. 'I like to pick. I like the toe, and if it has some stuff in it, I don't mind digging it out,' Banks, who is co-hosting this week, told Jenna Bush Hager. 'But I have a kit. You have to have a kit. Some alcohol, you know. Some stuff!' Banks shocked with her "disgusting" addiction. Picture: Supplied When Bush Hager asked who she targets with these rituals, the America's Next Top Model alum admitted that anyone in her household is fair game, reports Page Six. 'Anyone that wants it — my mum, my friends, my man, my son,' Banks confessed, referencing her beau, Louis Bélanger-Martin. 'And then, a pimple? If you had a pimple, I would be staring at you.' Banks labelled her 'addiction' as 'disgusting and erotic at the same time,' explaining, 'It touches those parts of me.' Banks at a tennis event during the Australian Open in January. Picture: Tennis Australia/ Fiona Hamilton However, the TV personality, 51, does have her limits. 'Nether regions. I'm not picking up in those,' Banks said. 'If somebody's like, 'Oh, can you check this?' I'm like, 'No … that's where I draw the line.' Chest up and knees down? It's on. I'm not popping and picking nothing [outside of] there.' The model further grossed out Bush Hager as she explained that her foot-focused obsession can get quite stinky at times. 'The toenail, because there's been stuff in there. The jam. The toe jam is up in the nail, and then you pick, and sometimes it's different colours. Sometimes it's brown, sometimes it's green,' she described. She's known for her glamorous appearance. Picture: Instagram. Banks has been romantically linked to Canadian businessman Bélanger-Martin since August 2018. In November 2019, we exclusively reported that the pair was taking the next step in their relationship by moving in together. 'Tyra and Louis live together but Louis always moves around a lot for business reasons,' an insider told us, adding that he and his ex-wife, Valérie Martin Scraire, have an apartment in England, a house in Barbados, and a home in Magog, Quebec. 'Louis also spends some time with his own child in England and around the world for business,' said the source. 'Tyra's child has his own room at Louis [and] Valerie's house in Magog and Tyra moved some of her stuff — clothes, jewellery — there too.' Brunch with the kids? Kid-friendly cafes in and around Perth
Forrestdale A cafe on a farm full of cubby houses, a climbing wall and lots of animals to feed? This is kid and adult heaven all wrapped up. When you're done feeding the farm animals you can feed yourself with their delicious menu that goes far beyond kiddie stuff. Think miso tofu ochazuke and twice-cooked Wagin duck leg. You'll be stuffed, the kids will be exhausted — win-win. Kings Park The playground opposite Koorak cafe. Credit: Instagram / TheWest This great little cafe in the Poolgarla Family Area of Kings Park is adjacent to some serious playground action, which is especially good if you have slightly older kids you can watch from a distance while lingering over a coffee. Their menu is full of cafe classics and they are licensed, too. North Perth Maybe don't descend on this tiny cafe with your entire mothers group, as squeezing in a pram would take some doing. But if you want to stay central, grab some breakfast and have a toddler in tow, Hank's is where to go. This cute-as cafe has a great little play area with Duplo and a few little toys and books to keep them entertained while you enjoy their excellent coffee. Bassendean Holly Rayes cafe. Credit: Instagram This cute cafe claims to be Basso's most kid and pet-friendly cafe, which means it's also pretty good for grown-ups with either of those things in their custody. With a mini play kitchen and seating separate to the main cafe, this is a great spot to meet with friends with kids (and pets). Balcatta Little T's in Balcatta. Credit: Daniel Wilkins / The West Australian Got a runner? A climber? A kid who will just Not. Sit. Still. Before you retreat to never leaving the house and drinking instant coffee, try this cafe which has the holy grail: a gated playground. This way the kids can climb while you enjoy your buttermilk pancakes.

This year's Logie Awards Hall of Fame winner announced
Don't miss out on the headlines from Logies. Followed categories will be added to My News. The Logies are almost upon us, with organisers announcing the winner of the coveted Hall of Fame award ahead of this Sunday's ceremony. It's been revealed Magda Szubanski AO will be bestowed with the honour, making her just the fifth female recipient since the first ever awards back in 1984. Szubanski, 64, who has enjoyed a stellar four-decade showbiz career, will be presented with the award onstage at The Star in Sydney. The comedic entertainer, who was born in England but raised in Melbourne, first hit our screens in the '80s on sketch shows including The D-Generation, Fast Forward and Full Frontal, while also carving a career in film with roles in 1995's Babe and its subsequent sequel. Magda Szubanski AO is the 2025 Logies Hall of Fame inductee. Picture:But she's perhaps best known for her star turn in the 2000s comedy Kath & Kim, playing the loveable Sharon Strzelecki – a character previously debuted in 1994's Big Girl's Blouse with Gina Riley and Jane Turner. 'With a career spanning nearly four decades, the much-loved Magda Szubanski has helped define Australian comedy, creating some of the country's most beloved and enduring characters,' a statement from Logies organisers read. 'The TV WEEK Logie Award Hall of Fame recognises outstanding and continued contribution and enrichment to Australian television culture by an individual, a group of individuals, or a program. 'Magda's contribution to comedy, literature, activism, and Australia's cultural identity is profound and influential. This induction into the TV WEEK Logie Awards Hall of Fame celebrates not only a remarkable television career but also a lifetime of shaping hearts, headlines, and history, and giving audiences the gift of huge laughs.' Gina Riley, Jane Turner and Magda Szubanski first debuted their Kath & Kim characters in 'Big Girl's Blouse' in the '90s. Magda's Sharon Strzelecki remains one of the most prominent characters in Aussie pop culture. Szubanski was previously bestowed with an Order of Australia (AO) in 2019 'for distinguished service to the performing arts as an actor, comedian and writer, and as a campaigner for marriage equality.' The recognition comes amid a devastating time in Szubanski's personal life, with the star announcing her stage four cancer diagnosis in May. The beloved entertainer told fans in a social media post she was battling Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare and fast-moving blood cancer. Szubanski confirmed she had begun 'the Nordic protocol' … 'one of the best treatments available' for the disease that was randomly picked up during a recent breast screen. 'Hello, my lovelies. The head is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks,' she said at the time. 'I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive lymphoma. 'It is one of the nasty ones unfortunately. 'The good thing is I'm surrounded by beautiful friends and family and an incredible medical support team. Honestly we have the best in the world here in Australia. 'It's pretty confronting. It is a full on one. But new treatments keep coming down the pipeline all the time … I've just got to (laughs). 'What do you? What are you gonna do?' The much-loved Aussie entertainer will be honoured at Sunday's Logies. Picture: LisaDuring the past decade, Szubanksi has increasingly opened up about her private battles. In her 2015 memoir Reckoning, Szubanski documented her complicated relationship with food and her sexuality, something she had guarded for decades before coming out in February 2012. She later admitted it was one of the scariest things she'd done in her life. In her social post this year, Szubanski signed off to her legion of fans with a request: 'If you do see me out and about – don't hug me, kiss me or breathe anywhere near me! Wave enthusiastically from a safe distance and know I love you madly.' The Logies will air Sunday night on Channel 7. Originally published as This year's Logie Awards Hall of Fame winner announced
