Steep auto-cab fares & long wait test people's patience on rainy days

Pune: The heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday caused significant disruptions for daily commuters relying on app-based autorickshaws and cabs, with long waiting period and surge pricing testing their patience.
In many cases, drivers insisted on higher prices reflected in the aggregator app unlike their recent practice of demanding meter fare.
Salisbury Park resident Kedar Damte, who works with a firm on JM Road, waited for one-and-a-half hours on Tuesday evening for an autorickshaw before a colleague offered to drop him at the Pune railway station. "I tried multiple aggregator apps, but no driver accepted my ride request, despite the app showing a fare of nearly Rs 400.
The cab fares were even higher at Rs 600. Finally, a colleague dropped me off at the Pune railway station around 8pm, from where I hired an autorickshaw for Rs 450 for a distance of just about 6km.
I had no choice. Still I reached home only around 10.30pm," he said.
IT professional Raveesh Joshi was shocked when his cab booking from Pune airport to Hinjewadi Phase-1 displayed a fare of Rs800 on Monday evening. "The cab driver was firm on the fare, refusing to negotiate.
When I cited the govt-approved fare website (onlymeter.in) showing Rs 630, he dismissed it, prompting me to cancel the ride and opt for a prepaid autorickshaw for Rs 555," he said.
Ghole Road resident Nachiketa Das, who works in Vimannagar, spent two hours after his 5 pm shift trying to catch an auto, both through apps and on the street. "It was raining cats and dogs, so I opted against riding my motorcycle and tried booking an auto via apps, but did not succeed.
Auto demanded Rs 600-700. Eventually, I rode till airport, parked my bike at AeroMall and took a prepaid auto for Rs 315, reaching home only after 10pm," he said.
Keshav Kshirsagar, the president of the Baghtoy Rickshawaala and Indian gig workers unions, said all members were advised against fleecing passengers. "These are standing instructions. Meter fares for both cabs and autorickshaws are applicable. All must obey them and shouldn't exploit commuters," he said.
A message was sent to Pune RTO Archana Gaikwad about the issue, but remained unanswered till going to press. Another RTO official said they would take action.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports starting August 1, a move that is expected to raise prices for American consumers across key sectors such as smartphones, textiles, auto parts and jewellery. The announcement, made on Truth Social, cites India's 'high tariffs" and 'non-monetary trade barriers," though analysts say the move could backfire for the US economy. 'India is our friend," Trump wrote, 'but we have done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high… and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non‑monetary trade barriers of any country." According to a Reuters report, India is a major supplier to the US in segments like smartphones, automotive components, cut and polished diamonds, ready-made garments, and pharmaceuticals. American companies and consumers will now likely face steeper costs across these essential categories. A recent analysis by Counterpoint Research highlights that India has become a global manufacturing hub for smartphones. Many of the mid-range Android phones and even components for US brands like Apple are assembled in India. A 25% tariff on such imports will inevitably increase prices for US consumers, who are already battling inflation. Yale's Budget Lab and the Associated Press forecasts apparel prices could rise 17% under the full tariff regime, even after substitution effects. India exported $2.2 billion worth of auto parts to the US in 2023, according to the Auto Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA). These include engine parts, brakes, gear assemblies and wiring harnesses. Reports in The Economic Times and Business Standard say that American auto manufacturers depend on Indian components to keep production costs low. NHAI debars CDS infra projects for faulty construction on Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway

The National Highways Authority of India has debarred CDS Infra Projects from participating in current and future national highway projects with effect from July 2 after cracks and settlements appeared in a small section of the under construction Sanchore–Santalpur portion of Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway and instructed the contractor to rectify all defects at their own cost. Besides, it has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 2.8 crore while issuing a show cause notice against the contractor, debarred authority engineer SA Infra in association with Upham and suspended NHAI project director (Palanpur) for faulty construction. Independent expert committees from IIT-BHU, IIT-Delhi, and IIT-Gandhinagar have been constituted to carry out detailed site inspections, testing, and to provide scientific recommendations, a government official said. As per the official, immediate remedial action has been initiated in the affected areas based on the recommendations of expert teams in view of the ongoing traffic movement along the corridor. 'The contractor has been instructed to rectify all defects at their own cost, specialized technical teams have been mobilized, and restoration works using appropriate machinery are currently underway,' the official said, adding the immediate restoration work including rectification of bitumen surface shall be done in next 10 days, subject to availability of dry spell. The preliminary assessment suggests that the failure of pavement crust is due to poor quality of aggregate interlayer (AIL), cement treated base (CTB), poor drainage and improper or cosmetic repairs carried out previously.
