Aparna continued, 'My loss was Shabana's gain. It was Shyam's first film and when he sent me the synopsis, I saw that the role was of a Hyderabadi servant girl who speaks smatterings of Telugu. Immediately, I was terrified. I didn't say that to him though. I just said thank you, but I don't think I'll do it."She added that if Benegal had been probed further, she would've given in: "And, that would have been a disaster because we wouldn't have had Shabana. I was so happy when I saw her in Ankur - and you were just wonderful.'Reflecting on her debut with 'Ankur', Shabana called working with Shyam Benegal a transformative experience: 'It wasn't just working with a director, it was an exercise in knowing myself. I hung on to every word he said."She added that Benegal was warm and had such faith in his actors that they felt confident taking risks.advertisementShabana fondly recalled travelling to Berlin with Benegal for the film's screening. 'It was my first time abroad. I just wanted to rush to the malls and shop,' she laughed, adding, 'But Shyam would sit and talk about the taxi driver, the garden, the history of the place. He taught me that there's so much more to experience."She also praised his meticulous nature. "He'd plan our entire festival itinerary, ensuring we watched the right films. He was so invested in learning and sharing knowledge."
Shabana Azmi and Anant Nag played pivotal roles in Ankur.
Aparna then brought up Shabana's gold medal from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), jokingly asking if she brought it to the set for confidence. Shabana responded, 'No, not at all. It was in my being.'Shabana recalled preparing for the role of Lakshmi. She said she had never even stepped into a village before shooting 'Ankur.' 'When I reached Yellareddiguda, the village where we shot, Shyam asked me to just wear my costume and walk around. The tailor came to take my measurements, and I was shocked — a male tailor in a village! That's how I began," she elaborated.advertisementShe shared that she didn't know how to speak Telugu, but she would speak Dakhini. Shabana said she was familiar with the dialect, having visited Hyderabad often, which helped her essay the role.Shayam Benegal's 'Ankur' won three National Film Awards and was nominated for a Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1974. Anupamaa's Rupali Ganguly slams National Awards for not considering TV actors: 'Film star shoot karta hai 2 din toh…'
The 71st National Awards were recently announced, and several stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, and Vikrant Massey were honoured with the best actor awards for their respective films. This announcement left social media ablaze, and many praised the actors for achieving this big milestone. Now, Rupali Ganguly expressed her disappointment that TV actors were not considered for the National Award despite their nonstop hard work and dedication in delivering continuous entertainment. Rupali Ganguly slams National Awards for not considering TV actors In conversation with Viral Bhayani at an event, Rupali Ganguly expressed her joy about seeing Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi's return and Smriti Irani's comeback to Television. She said, "It is such a big validation for a person of that stature to come to the medium that I love most." Rupali Ganguly continued, "It means a lot kyuki Television waalo ke liye koi National Award nahi hai. Toh agar Smriti Ji aaye toh ho sakta hai ki uss disha mai ek positive raasta mile. It will make a lot of difference (It means a lot because there is no national award for Television actors. So if Smriti Ji has returned, so it's possible that something in that direction, there can be a positive way)." She further slammed National Awards for considering all except Television actors. Ganguly said, "Aaj content creators ke liye National Award hai, films har regional cinema har kisi ke liye National Award hai lekin Television waalo ke liye nahi hai (Today there is National Award for content creators, every films and regional cinema has National Award except Television actors)." Reflecting on how Television actors work, the Anupamaa actress said, "Covid-19 mai baaki sabke pass yeh sahuliyat thi ki baaki shooting schedule postponed karte. Apne shooting baadme kare, ghar se na nikle. Lekin hum TV waale roz lage hue the, subhese 6 baje se lekar shaamke 6 baje tak, jab tak curfew time tha. (During Covid-19 everyone had the comfort of postponing the shoot without getting out. But TV actors were shooting every day from 6 AM to 6 PM till the curfew time)." Rupali pointed out, "Jab ek film star nikal kar shoot karta hai 2 din toh uske liye bohot badi news ban jaati hai lekin puri TV industry Covid mai shoot kar rahi thi voh news nahi bani (A film star shoots for two days, it becomes big news, but the entire television industry was filming during Covid and that did not garner similar attention)." She further urged the government to consider TV actors for the National Award, as they work hard. Rupali expressed that it would be an honour if television actors also received this recognition. She mentioned that with Smriti Irani's return, everyone's focus is now on TV. Rupali Ganguly is currently seen playing the lead role in Anupamaa.

Ashish Chanchlani DEFENDS Shah Rukh Khan's National Award win; SLAMS ‘forced hatred' towards ‘Jawan': 'Will never understand this'
Shah Rukh Khan has finally bagged the National Award for Best Actor, and fans across the country couldn't be happier. But not everyone is thrilled. While many are celebrating his big win for the 2023 blockbuster 'Jawan,' others are criticizing the decision, saying the film didn't deserve such a prestigious honor. Amid this mixed reaction, popular YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani has stepped in to defend the film and SRK's performance. Ashish calls out the 'forced hatred' Taking to his X handle on Monday, Ashish Chanchlani shared his honest thoughts on the ongoing criticism of 'Jawan.' He wrote, "Will never understand this forced 'hatred' for #Jawan. It's my most favorite SRK film after Chak De. It was entertaining and was also beautifully shot (sic)." His post quickly grabbed attention. While some people agreed with him, others still felt SRK had delivered more powerful performances in other films and should have been awarded for one of those instead. Netizens express their confusion online One user explained that the criticism isn't about hating the film but more about the surprise over the award being given for 'Jawan' specifically. "It's very easy to understand that no one is hating Jawan, but they are perplexed by the selection of SRK as getting the best actor for this. There were numerous movies where the acting level was 100x better than this. Indeed, it was a great mass masala entertainer film (sic)," the user wrote. SRK wins alongside Vikrant Massey The National Award for Best Actor this year is being shared by Shah Rukh Khan and Vikrant Massey, who won for his performance in '12th Fail.' The announcement brought in a wave of reactions across social media, with many praising both actors for their work. SRK shared a heartfelt thank you post Soon after the award was announced, Shah Rukh Khan posted a heartfelt note online. His arm was seen in a sling, but that didn't stop him from expressing his deep gratitude. He wrote, "Namashkar and Adaab. Needless to say, I am overwhelmed with gratitude, pride, and humility. To be honored with a National Award is a moment that I will cherish for a lifetime." He continued, "A National Award is not just about achievement. It's a reminder that what I do matters. It tells me to keep going, keep working hard, keep creating, and keep serving cinema. In a world full of noise, to be heard—to be truly heard—is a blessing. And I promise to you to use the recognition not as a finish line, but as a fuel to continue striving, learning, and giving back."

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) After 'Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life' failed to make it to the winners list at the 71st National Film Awards, fans of Prithviraj Sukumaran were visibly disappointed. Many expected the actor's intense and committed performance in the survival drama to earn national recognition. In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Prithviraj Sukumaran shared that awards were never the end goal. 'I wanted the film to work. I wanted people to like my performance, and most importantly, I wanted the world to know that man's story. All three happened,' he said. 'If I get a National Award, great; if I don't, congratulations to whoever gets it.' Fitness inspiration from Prithviraj Jury's decision sparks debate While the film received critical acclaim and connected with audiences, Aadujeevitham didn't make the final cut for the National Awards jury. Jury chairperson Ashutosh Gowariker reportedly felt the film lacked a natural flow and that Prithviraj's performance didn't come across as authentic. There are several criticisms aimed at 'The Kerala Story' win. Talking to On Manorama, the jury member and filmmaker Pradeep Nair added that, as a Malayali, he opposed the film's portrayal of Kerala, describing it as 'leaning towards propaganda.' As ETimes review puts it, "What to say about Prithviraj, except that he lives the character and is superb as Najeeb, who is completely lost and at wit's end in this unfamiliar region. Quite apart from the stunning body transformation, he brings the right mix of innocence and vulnerability to the role. The cinematography by Sunil KS and KU Mohanan give the film the feel of a masterpiece. The desert is stark under their gaze and adds to the emotions of the storytelling.
