Palakurthi to be developed as a healthy constituency

Hans India02-06-2025
Hanumakonda: 'We will transform Palakurthi into a healthy constituency,' declared MLA Yasaswini Reddy and Hanumandla Jhansi Reddy, chairperson, Hanumandla Family Charitable Trust and Congress party in-charge for the constituency, on Sunday.
Jhansi Reddy inaugurated a free mega medical camp at the Government High School in Thorrur organised by the Trust in collaboration with Ajara Super Specialty Hospital.
The two leaders said the Trust aims to provide quality free healthcare to the rural poor. They highlighted that the Trust has been serving people of the constituency for the past 30 years.
'A hospital was built in Thorrur with the commitment to provide quality healthcare to the underprivileged. It is working with the primary goal of improving the health of the poor,' said Jhansi. She explained that the camp was organised in view of the monsoon as a preventive measure against seasonal diseases and to control the spread of Covid. The camp was set up with a strong resolve not only to develop the constituency and ensure its welfare, but also to ensure that people remain healthy.
The leaders mentioned that doctors conducted check-ups for blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic illnesses. They urged the public to follow doctors' advice and stay healthy. They added that the government was making efforts to upgrade public hospitals in the constituency.
Funds have been sanctioned through the CM for a 100-bed hospital in Thorrur and a 50-bed hospital in Palakurthi. They appreciated the management and doctors of the hospital for their support in organising the camp.
Doctors B Shiva Subrahmanyam, B Satya Kiran, Samarth Reddy, Veerayya, Neeraj, Mamata and Yadagiri Reddy, along with local leaders, were present.

In a rare reversal, US NIH reinstates 891 cancelled grants, leaving research teams in disarray

US NIH reinstates 891 cancelled research grants after court ruling. (AI Image) In a major reversal, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has reinstated 891 biomedical research grants that had previously been cancelled. The move follows a federal court order issued by a judge in Boston, prompting the agency to restore funding to projects that had faced abrupt termination. The grants were initially suspended earlier in the year, affecting hundreds of researchers across the country. Many of these scientists had already enrolled participants, hired staff, or committed resources to long-term studies. The sudden reinstatement, while restoring financial support, has introduced new operational challenges for research teams. Researchers face staffing and operational hurdles One such researcher, Ethan Moitra of Brown University, was among the first to learn that his grant had been cancelled in early February. His study focused on how the Covid-19 pandemic impacted depression and anxiety levels, particularly within LGBTQ+ populations. At the time of cancellation, he had enrolled 240 participants. Although the grant was reinstated in the current month, the short timeline and loss of staffing have made it difficult to resume the study. Moitra noted that only five weeks of funding remain, and that the original team had since disbanded. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lara Green Is Retiring - Her Final Jewelry Pieces Are 80% Off The Heritage Journal Read More Undo Across the country, similar situations have unfolded. Scientists affected by the initial cancellations had been forced to lay off staff, retract job offers, and pause or completely halt research activities. While the reinstatement has brought a temporary reprieve, many projects are struggling to regain momentum due to administrative and staffing breakdowns. Court order prompts NIH to act The reinstatement of the grants came after a court ruling in Boston, which ordered the NIH to reverse its prior decisions. The ruling affected 891 biomedical research grants, all of which are now back in effect. The NIH has not provided a full statement on the reason for the initial cancellations or the court's findings. Lingering effects on US research infrastructure Although the funding has been restored, the long-term impact on US research programmes remains uncertain. The disruption caused by the grant cancellations has affected ongoing data collection, team structures, and project timelines. Many researchers are now facing compressed schedules, with some left with only a few weeks of funding to complete their studies. The reinstated grants cover a wide range of biomedical topics and were part of ongoing federal research initiatives. The temporary loss of these projects has contributed to wider operational challenges within the US scientific community. TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here . PGI's Rs 490 cr Advanced Neuroscience Centre nears launch by Sept

Chandigarh: India's healthcare system, currently facing a critical shortage of neurologists—with just one specialist available per million people—is on the brink of a major breakthrough. The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), Chandigarh, is preparing to launch its long-awaited Advanced Neuroscience Centre, a Rs 490 crore project that promises to revolutionise neurological and neurosurgical care across the country. Approved in 2017 and with construction beginning in 2020, the centre is now nearing full operationalisation. PGI officials have confirmed that the outpatient department (OPD) is expected to become functional by September, marking a significant milestone in the journey to improve access to specialised brain and spine treatment. Once fully operational, the centre will join the ranks of premier institutions like NIMHANS Bengaluru and AIIMS Delhi's Cardiothoracic and Neurosciences Centre. However, PGI's facility stands out for its integrated model, combining neurology and neurosurgery services under one roof. "This will be the largest such centre in India where both specialities are housed in a single building," said a PGI official. "Beds will be consolidated, not scattered across departments, ensuring seamless care for patients. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo " The project has faced several hurdles over the years. Construction was halted during the Covid pandemic in March, 2020 and resumed with limited labour by June. More recently, delays were caused by the renewal of pollution control clearance from the state pollution control board and the calculation of property tax arrears owed by PGI. Despite these challenges, the administration remains optimistic about the centre's phased rollout. The facility will feature 300 general ward beds, 10 modular operating theatres, dedicated ICUs, 10 High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds, and 30 private ward beds. It will offer advanced sub-specialities such as cerebrovascular surgery, skull base surgery, and spinal functional neurosurgery. A key highlight is the Brain Suite, a specialised operating room designed for complex neurosurgical procedures. While some equipment requests—like a 3T MRI, Bi-plane DSA, and dual-energy CT scan—were scaled down due to budget constraints, PGI faculty believe the centre will still significantly enhance diagnostic and treatment capabilities. "Patients come from all corners of India because of the expertise and affordability PGI offers," said a senior faculty member. The Advanced Neuroscience Centre is expected to serve as a national hub for neurological care, addressing a long-standing gap in specialised treatment. With its integrated approach and cutting-edge infrastructure, the centre is poised to offer a lifeline to thousands of patients who currently struggle to access timely and affordable brain and spine care.
