A Venice businessman has now proposed the city introduce a €100 (£86) entry fee for day-tripping tourists.
Setrak Tokatzian, who is the president of St Mark's Square resident's association, said the charge would help to combat what he called 'obscene' overtourism in the historic Italian city.
As of right now, seven out of 10 visitors to only stay in Venice for a day, and often do not spend money in local shops.
The city became the first metropolitan area globally to charge day-trippers an admission fee, which was introduced on 25 April 2024.
Holidaymakers with hotel or Airbnb reservations within the city are exempt but other tourists have to pay €5 (£4.20) to visit.
Significant increase
The proposed €100 (£86) fee would be 20 times more expensive, aiming to deter tourists who do not contribute to the local economy.
Tokatzian described Venice as being is in a 'state of calamity' in an interview with local newspaper Corriere del Veneto.
'This tourism is obscene, there's a complete explosion of overtourism like never before, with a type of people wandering around without entering shops or even knowing where they are," he said.
Tokatzian, who owns a jewellery shop in the city, called for the charge in order to stem the 'rivers of people' arriving in Venice.
'They move from one place to another, often guided by tour operators, boarding gondolas, hopping into taxis, rushing here and there, but no one buys anything," he explained.
The tiny coastal village named the Venice of England is home to the country's best B&B
He added that tourists who 'don't know what culture is' often bypass storefronts to spend money on 'illegal vendors' selling grain for pigeons and roses.
A €5 (£4.20) to €10 (£8.35) levy was trialled between April and July this year.
Last-minute tourists who made reservations less than four days in advance were charged the higher rate.
Daytrippers visiting during peak hours, 8:30AM to 4PM, have to pay the daily fee.
Meanwhile, overnight tourists with hotel reservations are exempt from the charge.

Opposition to fees
The proposal faces opposition as critics argue that such a high rate would not teach visitors 'respect'.
The former president of the St Mark's Square association Claudio Vernier shared his thoughts on social media.
'To believe that an entry fee of €100 can solve this sick system is a pure illusion," he said.
'Asking 100 euros to enter does not educate the visitor. Doesn't teach them respect, doesn't make them more aware."
He pointed out that charging such a high entry rate may work against the city.
'Those who spend a similar amount will expect a perfect, luxurious, frictionless 'theme park' experience — an expectation that cannot be met in a lively, historic, fragile city," he said.

The pair were also spotted wandering through the back streets of Rome — with Harry carrying a bottle of wine. A source said: 'Harry loves nothing more than showing people his favourite spots in Italy. 'He also loves art and Kim has been a great source of inspiration.' Kim, who grew up in Antwerp, Belgium, has shared pictures on her Instagram of The Loggia Of Cupid And Psyche — a mural depicting a love affair — at the Villa Farnesina in Rome. She also posted snaps of red peppers drying on a rooftop in Ravello on Italy's Amalfi Coast. It comes as Harry is rumoured to have fallen in love with the small Italian village of Civita di Bagnoregio. The Watermelon Sugar hitmaker spent the pandemic learning Italian and sign language. During his final Love On Tour show in Reggio Emilia, Italy, in 2023, Harry thanked 120,000 fans in Italian. Speaking in their language, he said: 'The last two years of my life have been a wonderful gift and it is truly very special to end my tour here, in a country that has a special place in my heart.' Harry Styles' mystery woman revealed after Glastonbury snog - and she's VERY different to the women he's dated before In June, the singer was seen sharing a passionate kiss with producer Ella Kenny at Glastonbury Festival. It came after his relationship with actress Taylor Russell ended in May last year. He was seen kissing model Emily Ratajkowski on a night out in 2023 and has previously dated model Kendall Jenner, singer Taylor Swift and actress Olivia Wilde. Last month, Harry launched his own vibrating sex toy and lubricant through his lifestyle brand, Pleasing. Alongside his new passion as a tour guide, it seems that Harry has many strings to his bow. The singer will sit down with interviewer Louis Theroux to recount her days in the pop group, which has had six members over the years, including the original (and current) line-up of Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy, as well as former members Jade Ewen and Amelle Berrabah. A source close to the project, which follows last year's Boybands Forever, said: 'Heidi has never spoken about what went on. 'Louis reached out to her directly and she finally agreed to take part a couple of weeks ago. It was an emotional interview and one that viewers will want to watch.' Last year, the Sugababes were handed a gong at the Mobo Awards, but Heidi's mum hit out after her daughter was 'white-washed' from the nomination video. She wrote on Instagram: 'I can't believe the cheek of it. Sugababes didn't have a hit till Heidi joined. It is so false and disrespectful the way they are carrying on.' Mutya hit back: 'When I wasn't in the group and the girls was doing big things without me, do you think I was getting upset about not being mentioned?' A spokesman for the original trio declined to comment. Forget the Suga – things might be about to turn very sour again. A source told me: 'Tom and Amy are in the honey-moon phase and are the new power couple in town. 'Tom is a rising star in the film industry and Amy has fast become the first person pop stars want to work with.' Earlier this year, Amy scooped the Grammy Award for Songwriter Of The Year – the first woman to win the gong since its introduction in 2023. I visited the European city where ‘fairytales began' with beautiful mountain parks and cheap Ryanair flights
The city marks the start of the German Fairytale Route, stretching 600km through the country to the maritime city of Bremen FAIRYTALE ROUTE I visited the European city where 'fairytales began' with beautiful mountain parks and cheap Ryanair flights Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WE all know our Disney fairytales and their happily ever afters, right? Well, the original versions of favourites such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood and Rumpelstiltskin were a lot darker, as I found out on my visit to Hanau, Germany, the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 5 The magical medieval castle in Kassel Credit: Getty 5 A nod to Cinderella at Marburg Castle Credit: Alamy 5 The Grimms path in Marburg Credit: Alamy The city marks the start of the German Fairytale Route, stretching 372 miles through the country to the maritime city of Bremen. Along the way you can explore quaint towns, medieval castles and ancient forests — and imagine you, too, are in the middle of a fairytale. The main focus for my adventure was the life of the Grimm Brothers, credited with devising the opening line 'Once upon a time' and the concluding 'lived happily ever after'. In Hanau, I learned that in their early years, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm scoured the surrounding countryside for authentic folk tales that had been handed down over generations. Then, in 1812, they decided to publish a compilation of all they had heard on their travels, including Cinderella and Rapunzel. But the violence in some of the stories meant that the book was not particularly well received, so the brothers had to rely on their creative skills to tone down the explicit elements. And with that, the modern day fairytale was born. But it's not this collection of stories I'm here to uncover on my four-day trip, it's the story behind the Brothers Grimm themselves. Strolling through the main square of Hanau, I could not miss the huge statue of the pair which commemorates the fact they were born here. This city is understandably proud and has erected a trail of artworks depicting various characters from their stories, including King Thrushbeard, Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood. Martin Lewis warns about strict passport rule that could see you board your flight - only to get sent home on arrival About 30 minutes from here by car sits my favourite stop on the trail, Steinau an der Strasse. With higgledy-piggledy houses surrounded by lush trees, I immediately fell in love with the beautiful little village, which is as chocolate box as something from a fairytale. And it turns out the brothers loved it, too. This is the place where they are said to have spent the happiest part of their childhood. And you can get a sense for that in their former home. Now open to the public, the house-turned-museum hosts interesting exhibits about their work, as well as the works of their younger brother, Ludwig Emil, a talented artist who created the illustrations in the brothers' book. Cascading water Their grandfather had been the priest in the local church in the marketplace for 47 years and their father was born here. After a brief stint in Hanau, he returned to the village in the early years of his marriage to become a magistrate. While here, check out Die Holzkoeppe, a theatre that puts on regular puppet shows. And for a flavour of traditional Germany, head to Cafe Restaurant Rosengarten, which serves classic schnitzels in various forms, including a Little Red Riding Hood version that comes topped with tomatoes and mozzarella. The following day, my journey continued a little over an hour north to the hilly and historic market town of Marburg, where the Brothers studied. It is a charming destination full of beautiful half-timbered houses. 5 Unicorns on the Grimms Path Credit: Alamy 5 Jane Keightley reading by a statue Credit: Supplied The brothers have certainly left their mark on the town, with visitors now able to follow the 'Grimms Path', which takes you on a mile-long fairytale-themed walk through the old town. The final stop on my fairytale adventure took me even further north to Kassel, where the Brothers eventually became librarians so that they could support their family while they searched for fairytales. Today, the city is home to the largest museum dedicated entirely to the Grimms. Called Grimmwelt, it has a trail of original exhibits as well as state-of-the-art installations and hands-on activities. The city is also a great place for ramblers as it is home to a Unesco World Heritage park and Europe's largest mountain park, filled with cascading water features. With gorgeous green and woodland landscapes like this around, I can see how the brothers found the inspiration to adapt their fairytale stories. And, certainly, no Disney princess would look out of place here.
