Two women actors in fray for key AMMA posts
Ms. Menon will battle it out with actor Devan for the top post. Ms. Parameswaran will face actor Raveendran in the contest for the post of secretary. The election is scheduled on August 15. Actor Ansiba Hassan was elected joint secretary as all others who had submitted their nominations for the post withdrew from the contest.
Actors Unni Sivapal and Anoop Chandran will vie for the post of treasurer. Those remaining in the fray for the vice-president posts include Jayan Cherthala, Lakshmipriya, and Nasser Latheef.
Baburaj, Jagadeesh opt out
The last day for the withdrawal of nominations had all the elements of a potboiler as actor Baburaj, who had filed the nomination for the post of secretary, opted out of the race amidst criticism by a section of the actors that those who are facing allegations of sexual misconduct must stay away from the election. In a Facebook post, he said that he was quitting from all works related to the association. This was not out of fear, he said.
Mr. Baburaj said that he was pained by the allegations raised against him by some of the members, despite having worked in the association for the last eight years. 'They could have defeated me after going through the electoral process. That would have been democratic. But I am unable to move ahead facing the allegations,' he said.
Actor Jagadeesh opted out of the race for the post of president after he spoke with senior actors, including Mohanlal, Mammootty and Suresh Gopi. It was stated that he decided to withdraw from the fray amid the support from various quarters for a woman president.

Kalabhavan Navas laid to rest in Aluva, hundreds pay respects
Kochi: Scores of people from various walks of life, including prominent figures in the Malayalam film industry, paid their last respects to popular mimicry artist and actor Kalabhavan Navas when his body was kept for public homage at his residence and Town Juma Masjid in Aluva on Saturday. The mortal remains were interred at Town Juma Masjid around 6pm, in the presence of his family members and others. Navas was found unconscious in a hotel room in Chottanikkara on Friday night. He was taken to a nearby hospital where his death was confirmed due to heart failure. He was staying at the hotel after the last day of shooting for the upcoming Malayalam movie 'Prakambanam'. On Saturday, his body was taken to his residence on the Aluva-Perumbavoor road, around 1pm, after postmortem was conducted at the Ernakulam govt medical college hospital. His colleagues in the industry, including Lal, Sidique, Ramesh Pisharody, Sharafudheen, Bindu Panickar, Saikumar, Kalabhavan Shajon, K S Prasad, Kottayam Nazeer and others, paid their last respects. The autopsy report confirmed that Navas's death was due to heart failure. Signs of a previous heart attack were also found during the postmortem. Navas was found collapsed near the door of his hotel room, which was not locked. Actor Vinod Kovoor said in a Facebook post that Navas experienced chest pain on the set during shooting. According to Radio Omega, 'Ivory Coast is regularly accused by the Burkinabe junta of harbouring opponents and fomenting plots.' The report discussed a protest in the capital, Ouagadougou, during a memorial to a Burkinabe figure who passed away in captivity in Abidjan, the main city of Ivory Coast. 'The expression 'Burkinabe junta', in addition to being inappropriate for referring to the Burkinabe authorities, is pejorative and insulting, suggesting contempt,' the CSC stated. 'Such a tendency by the media constitutes a malicious insinuation and seriously offends the Burkinabe authorities.' In a statement released on Thursday, the radio station attributed the article's publication to 'a service provider' that had not been validated by the editorial management. On Wednesday, Radio Omega – a subsidiary of the Omega Medias group, which also owns a television channel owned by journalist and former foreign minister Alpha Barry – issued a correction, removing the 'inappropriate expressions'.
