Phumelela Cafu excited for day of ‘Truth' to unify titles

TimesLIVE14-05-2025
World Boxing Organisation (WBO) junior-bantamweight world champion Phumelela Cafu says he never thought one day he would fight to unify world titles.
Nicknamed 'The Truth', Cafu will put his belt on the line against World Boxing Council (WBC) titlist Jesse Rodriquez in a winner-takes-all contest at the Star Frisco in Dallas, Texas, on July 19.
On the same day but at London's Wembley Stadium, Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois will battle it out for their undisputed heavyweight title fight. Usyk, from Ukraine, holds the WBA (Super), WBC, WBO, IBO and The Ring belts, while his English dance partner will put his IBF title on the line.
'I am so excited my fight against Rodriquez happens on the same day as the heavyweight championship, which means that weekend will be about unification fights and I am part of it,' said Cafu.

Goalkeeper Trafford returns to Man City from Burnley

Trafford, who will wear the number one shirt, will battle with Brazilian Ederson to be first choice. Goalkeeper James Trafford has signed a deal to return to Manchester City from Burnley, the Premier League giants announced on Tuesday. Man City activated a £27.5 million ($36.7 million) buy-back clause for the 22-year-old England youth international, according to British media reports. ALSO READ: Bayern agree deal to sign Liverpool winger Diaz: reports Trafford, who never played for the City senior team during his first spell at the Etihad Stadium, left for Burnley in 2023. He struggled in his first season as the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League, but equalled an English football record with 29 clean sheets last term to help Burnley earn promotion back into the top flight. 'This is the place I call home — it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play,' he said in a statement. 'I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving — and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be. 'I will do everything I can to help this great club look to achieve even more success.' City coach Pep Guardiola dropped established number one Ederson multiple times last season in favour of Stefan Ortega. Trafford, who will wear the number one shirt, will battle with Brazilian Ederson to be first choice. He is Man City's sixth signing of the transfer window after they finished third last season, well adrift of champions Liverpool in their bid for a fifth straight Premier League title. Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Cherki and Sverre Nypan have all already moved to the club since the end of last season.

Top African female boxers clash for WBC title in Johannesburg

South African female flyweight champion Simangele 'Smash' Hadebe, based in Johannesburg and currently rated number one in Africa by Boxrec, will face undefeated Nigerian boxer Olamiposi Kehinde Solomon. Both fighters will compete for the World Boxing Council (WBC) African female flyweight title in Johannesburg on August 30. Smash's last fight was in July this year, when she lost to Mexican boxer Gabriela Sanchez Bonita at the Zaragoza Olympic Stadium in Mexico, competing for the WBC Silver female flyweight title. During that bout, Smash fought hard, breaking Sanchez's nose with a stiff jab in the first round. She won the first two rounds and cornered Sanchez, showcasing her boxing skills. Smash's manager, Colleen McAusland, noted that Smash will be the first female to fight for the WBC Africa title on African soil. Solomon, currently rated number two by Boxrec, last fought in December 2023. This means both fighters are ready for their upcoming clash.
