2026 draft scouting first look: Miami QB Carson Beck
After briefly declaring for the last draft, Beck opted to transfer to Miami. It's a chance at a prospect revitalization with Beck taking over for Hurricanes QB Cam Ward, who emerged as the No. 1 overall pick after one year in Miami. Beck has some work to do to get into that conversation, but there is still a lot to like about his pro-style game and potential.
How Beck translates to Miami's offense remains to be seen. He's not Ward, who proved more patient and less mistake-prone in 2024 than Beck did. A quick refresh on Beck's performances against Alabama, Texas (the first meeting) and Ole Miss spotlights exactly where Beck can help himself regain first-round status for the 2026 NFL Draft. Before that comes, however, he'll need to show he's fully recovered from UCL surgery on his throwing elbow.
Beck does still offer quite a bit of potential as a sort of high-end game manager, which isn't nearly the disparaging comment it's often interpreted to be. When Beck is patient, seeing the defense well (both pre- and post-snap) and confident in both his arm and the players around him, the 6-4, 220-pounder is a very good quarterback.
Scouting first look: Caleb Downs
He's got a good arm, not elite but certainly not lacking in zip. Beck can hit the wide sideline throws and rifle the ball into shrinking windows when he wants to. The throwing motion is fluid and easy, with consistent mechanics and a strong lower-body base. The feet and hips don't appear to engage as fluidly when he's pressured or on the move, but that's something that can be coached up.
Beck's ability to handle pressure, both from the defense and from the weight of leading his own team, was not nearly as sharp in 2024 as they were in Georgia's national championship run a year earlier. Throwing to a lesser receiving corps, Beck appeared to try and get too perfect with his throws at times. The Bulldogs receivers weren't reliable and that looked like it weighed on Beck. How quickly Beck can develop chemistry and trust with his new Hurricanes mates should be a big key in his evaluation.
It's the more complex defensive pressures and more exotic and deceptive coverages that really tripped up Beck in big games. Even in the upset win over Texas in October, Beck threw interceptions on Georgia's second and third offensive drives and struggled all day with now-NFL DBs Andrew Mukuba and Jahdae Barron not sticking to the film script Beck expected. Handling the added degree of difficulty from interior pressure that forces Beck to move off his desired throw point, and doing that while also more adeptly processing the back-end variations.
Beck isn't really a runner, but like Ward a year ago, he's not stiff or reluctant to use his legs to gain a few yards when given the opportunity. Pocket mobility is a little better than advertised, though Beck could anticipate his escape routes a little better. That's true of most "game manager" quarterbacks, which again is not a pejorative in Beck's case. When he got away from being in calm control of the offense is when he struggled the most, a la recent draftees Bo Nix or Hendon Hooker.
There's a lot for Beck to prove in 2025, but the capability for him to rise back up into prominent draft consideration is certainly there. It's going to take some work, however.

Ohio State football well-represented at the top of PFF's Top 50 college football players
Pro Football Focus (PFF) has made a big splash on the American football season over the last few years with its analytics-driven data to measure players' performances, snap counts, and more. And while the name "Pro" is in name, PFF also dabbles a ton in the college game. The site and its tools have become very popular, as have some of the articles and rankings that it has shared with the masses. Recently, PFF ranked the top 50 players in college football, and anytime a list like that is circulated, you know Ohio State has to be well represented. In this case, heading into the fall of 2025, it's not quantity, but quality when it comes to Buckeyes on the list, especially after they sent 14 players to the NFL via the draft last April. All told, Ohio State has just two players in the top 50 according to PFF, which falls behind teams like Alabama, Penn State, and Texas (five each), but the two that it has can claim something no other school can. OSU has the two best players in the college game according to PFF, with receiver Jeremiah Smith leading the pack, followed by safety Caleb Downs at No. 2. Come to think of it, that mirrors what EA Sports says about Ohio State's roster. It also ranked the duo as the two best players in the game in that same order. And PFF and EA Sports aren't the only outlets claiming that Ohio State has the two best players in the game; it's almost everywhere you look. Here's to hoping that the rest of what is still a talented roster can fill in the gaps, come together, and develop into another College Football Playoff national championship contender. 14 Dolphins selections named best NFL draft picks ever taken at slot
Some of the greatest players in NFL history have donned the aqua and orange. In ESPN's look back at the best NFL draft pick ever at every draft slot from No. 1 to No. 262, 14 Dolphins selections found their way onto the list. ESPN's Ben Solak took "best" to mean some combination of "most talented" and "most succesful" and added some extra weight for players that were lifers with one franchise. Here's a look at the 14 Dolphins NFL draft selections that garnered inclusion from ESPN. Miami Dolphins' NFL draft selections included among ESPN's best ever Dolphins Hall of Famers Dan Marino, Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas were no-brainers on this ESPN list. Marino passed for 61,361 yards to rank ninth all-time in NFL history. Marino finished with 420 touchdown passes and guided the Dolphins to an appearance in Super Bowl XIX. During that 1984 season, Marino became the first NFL quarterback to pass for more than 5,000 yards in a season and set a single-season passing touchdowns record at the time with 48. Taylor was a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro. Taylor was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2006 after registering 62 total tackles, a team-high 13.5 sacks, two interceptions returned for scores, 11 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. During his 12-year stretch with Miami, Thomas led the Dolphins in tackles in 10 seasons and racked up 100 tackles in each of his first 11 seasons. Throughout his career, Thomas registered 20.5 sacks and amassed 17 interceptions for 170 yards and four touchdowns. Thomas was voted first-team All-Pro five times and was a seven-time Pro Bowler. Six players from the list were selected in the 1970s, four in the 1980s, three in the 1990s and one in 2019. Of course, quarterback Joe Theismann never played for the Dolphins. Theismann was drafted by the franchise in 1971, but he initially opted to play in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts. In an ironic twist, Theismann would later beat the Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII with the then-Washington Redskins who Miami traded Theismann's rights to in 1974.

Cowboys Pro Bowler KaVontae Turpin lands in legal trouble just weeks before training camp
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver KaVontae Turpin was arrested in Texas on marijuana and weapons charges on Saturday. The speedy receiver and return specialist for Dallas is facing a pair of misdemeanor charges after being arrested and booked into Collin County Jail, per The Dallas Morning News. Turpin faces possession of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon, both being misdemeanors in Texas. Jail records also confirm that Turpin was released from jail on Sunday. There are no further specifics on Turpin's incident or whether he will face any discipline from the Cowboys or the NFL. This isn't the first time Turpin has dealt with off-the-field legal issues, as he was kicked off his TCU Horned Frogs squad due to assault charges, which he pleaded guilty to in college. Turpin ended up going undrafted out of college, where he played in several leagues before ultimately landing with the Cowboys in 2022. He ended up finding a solid home there, earning two Pro Bowl nods during his three seasons, most of which were due to his ability to make magic happen on special teams. He was a first-team All-Pro last season after totaling a league-high 904 return yards on kickoffs with one touchdown. He also had a punt return and 187 yards on those kicks last season. Turpin can also provide some breakout speed when Dak Prescott gets him the ball, hauling in 31 receptions for 420 yards with two touchdowns. The Cowboys will open training camp on July 21, beginning their preparation for their Week 1 matchup — a "Thursday Night Football" bout to kick off the NFL season against the Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles.
