Backlash: The Murder of George Floyd, review: the white middle-class guilt over Black Lives Matter

Telegraph21-05-2025
Why did the death of George Floyd spark a global protest movement? The LA riots didn't spread across the world after the beating of Rodney King. The fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin didn't cause much of a ripple outside the US. Yet the killing of Floyd outside a convenience store in Minneapolis was the catalyst for Edward Colston's statue, 4,000 miles away in Bristol, being torn down and dumped into the harbour, while celebrities and organisations fell over themselves to voice public support for Black Lives Matter. Backlash: The Murder of George Floyd (BBC Two) makes an attempt to answer the question, but its analysis only goes so far.
The feature-length documentary speaks to people in the US involved in the case – the Minneapolis chief of police, a community leader who helped to organise the first protests – and to random British contributors. I say 'random', because while the likes of Adele and Harry Styles tweeted pro-BLM messages to their millions of supporters at the time, and Star Wars actor John Boyega risked blowing up his career by making an impassioned speech in Hyde Park, the contributors here are Great British Menu presenter Andi Oliver, her daughter, Miquita, and comedian Munya Chawawa.
It begins with footage of Floyd's arrest in May 2020. His dying moments – an officer with his knee on Floyd's neck, and Floyd protesting, 'I can't breathe' – are played later. The footage went viral. Floyd's uncle, Selwyn Jones, watched it before realising the man on the ground was his nephew. 'That was the day the world changed. That video played every second of the day, all over the world,' he said.
Viral video in the age of social media explains why everyone knew about George Floyd, but why did that translate into protests on British streets? The documentary highlighted incidents in the UK involving black men and the police, including the shocking – and under-reported – case of Julian Cole, left paralysed and brain damaged after an arrest outside a nightclub. Nathalie Emmanuel, an actor and BLM protester, said the uncertainty of the pandemic had contributed to a sense of hopelessness, while scenes viewed on mobile phones took on a new intensity because they were our only connection to the outside world.
In the Forest of Dean, a young woman named Khady Gueye, who has a white English mother and a black Senegalese father, was prompted to confront the horrible racism she had faced at school. She pulled out her school leavers' shirt, signed by friends – friends, not enemies – with messages calling her racist names. The murder of George Floyd, Gueye said, suddenly felt 'like a really powerful moment to make change'.
All of this made sense, and was difficult to hear. But beyond the personal stories, the documentary didn't stand back far enough to assess whether the changes have been lasting, or if corporations were cynically jumping on the BLM bandwagon. And in assessing the backlash to BLM, it gives us only Donald Trump telling voters that 'our country will be woke no longer', plus ex-GB News journalist Inaya Folarin-Iman speaking of the embarrassment she felt at watching middle-class white people tearing down the Colston statue.
One of the most surreal bits of footage is of what also looks like a bunch of middle-class white people kneeling for eight minutes and 46 seconds – the time it took George Floyd to die – on the high street in Totnes. They're all taking it very seriously. But how many of those people give black lives much of a thought today?

Kerry Katona shares her controversial views on Coldplay cheating couple after THAT kiss cam scandal

Their affair was revealed to the world last week after a couple were caught cheating while on the kiss cam at Coldplay 's concert on Tuesday. Andy Byron, former CEO of software firm Astronomer, was caught with his arms around the company's chief people officer Kristin Cabot at the band's Boston Gillette Stadium gig. The 50-year-old then resigned from the billion-dollar company on Saturday in a statement after being placed on leave. And now Kerry Katona has weighed in on the scandal, however the Atomic Kitten star has a slightly more controversial view. Kerry, 44, has had a colourful relationship history herself and in her latest column for New magazine she appeared to sympathise with the cheating pair. She penned: 'I can't believe Chris Martin caught a couple looking cosy at one of Coldplay's concerts in Boston and they ended up on a big screen in front of million of fans. Then the video went viral. 'Yeah I had an affair myself once - while I was married to my second husband Mark Croft - and it was the best thing I ever did. 'I'd say it probably saved my life.' Kerry was married to the former taxi driver from 2007 until their official divorce in 2011. Their relationship was marred by cheating allegations from both parties and claims he had an 'obsession with spending her money,' that contributed to her bankruptcy. The star has previously admitted she had an affair during their marriage after she cheated on him with ex Royal Marine Kevin Green, who she met at the GI Jane Bootcamp. Talking about the affair back in 2023 on Slingo's Getting Lippy Gossip Show alongside host Emma Conybeare and MailOnline's Rebecca Lawrence, Kerry recalled the incident. She explained: 'I had an affair myself when I was with Mark Croft and it was the best thing that I ever did.' The TV personality continued: 'We were both married we both fell madly in love with each other he did leave his wife for a little bit but for me that just... it saved my life.' The pair had a turbulent relationship since they married at Gretna Green on Valentine's Day in 2007. Their wedding came six days before the birth of their daughter Heidi. In April 2008 they welcomed a son, Maxwell Mark. Shortly after the ceremony reports alleged that Mark slept with a former lover in the days following their engagement and also had an affair with a second woman. He was then pictured apparently fondling a stripper in Majorca while he was on a make-or-break holiday with Kerry and their children. They split for good in 2010, when Kerry was introduced to Kevin in January when he agreed to help out at a weight-loss bootcamp course in Kent. Her progress was also followed by a camera crew for the ITV2 show Kerry Katona: The Next Chapter. The singer admitted to kissing Kevin but insists the relationship didn't develop any further because they were both married.

Awful public insults 'killer dad' Luciano Frattolin leveled at daughter, 9, as it's revealed he was $200k in debt

The Canadian father who allegedly killed his nine-year-old daughter in New York had insulted her 'messy art projects' and 'chaotic' toys on his coffee business's website. Luciano Frattolin, 45, wrote on his Gambella Coffee website that he struggled with daughter Melina's impact on his life because of his obsession with keeping 'perfect order' in his home. The businessman included candid insights into his 'feelings of isolation' and struggles with 'incidences of racism', and said he was hit hard by the death of his father as a teenager. At his arraignment on Monday, where he hung his head in shame as he was perp-walked into Ticonderoga Town Court in upstate New York, Frattolin also revealed he is mired in debt. He said he is more than $200,000 in debt due to his failing business in Canada, and admitted he could not afford a lawyer as he pleaded not guilty to murdering Melina. According to authorities, Frattolin killed his little girl as they were heading home from a vacation in New York on Saturday night, and he was set to give custody back to her mother. He called 911 in upstate New York and claimed that she had been abducted, but soon after an AMBER alert was issued, suspicion fell on Luciano. Cops said he had 'inconsistencies' in his story of the abduction, before her body was found in a lake in a remote stretch in Ticonderoga, New York, around 45 miles south of where her father said she had last been seen. Despite his apparent insults at his daughter's 'messy' impact on his life, Frattolin also wrote on his coffee website bio that she is the 'light of his life.' 'She is the inspiration for... well, everything,' the bio read. 'His pursuits for building a more equitable and just world are deeply guided by his determination that she will not have to endure the same social injustices that he encountered throughout his childhood.' The bio has since been scrubbed from the internet, with Frattolin's coffee company and failing business ventures said to have severely impacted him in recent years. According to a report in Canadian news outlet La Presse, Frattolin had rented a property in a hip neighborhood in Montreal since 2020, which he subletted as an Airbnb. He said in court documents reported by the outlet that he hired two property managers to run the Airbnb and make the rent payments, which he then used to pay for Melina's child support. But he still fell $26,000 behind in rent, and his lease was terminated by the landlord in August 2024. Frattolin is currently suing the two property managers for over $115,000, alleging that they never made the rental payments as promised, per Le Devoir. The managers countered that Frattolin had plans to flee the country and empty his bank account, which he denied. The Bank of Nova Scotia said Frattolin owed around $83,000 on Dépanneur Café, coffee shop he once owned, alongside $97,000 in credit card debt from Café Gambella, a coffee shop with the same name as his failing coffee business. After Melina's body was found on Sunday, Frattolin is now facing charges of second-degree murder and concealment of a corpse. At a press conference on Monday, officers said they came to believe he 'fabricated' his report of an abduction due to inconsistencies with his story. He initially claimed that his daughter was kidnapped near Lake George in upstate New York when he pulled over to urinate in the woods. He said he turned around to find that Melina was missing, and saw a 'suspicious white van' fleeing the scene. But he later said that 'two unknown males forced' his daughter into the white van. At the press conference, officials said that Luciano and Melina had traveled to the US from Canada on July 11 for a vacation, and were expected to return on Sunday. Luciano and Melina had spent the week on vacation in New York, but he was set to hand custody of his daughter back to her mother that day, officials said. Melina's mother had full-time custody, and had been estranged from Luciano since 2019. At around 6:30pm on Saturday, Melina phoned her mom to say she was heading back to Canada, but sometime that night she was allegedly murdered. The little girl was found in the shallow portion of a pond in upstate New York near the town of Ticonderoga on Sunday. Her cause of death is not yet known, and officials said they would perform an autopsy on Monday.

This Morning fans seriously concerned by Christina Aguilera's appearance as she promotes new show - gasping ‘is that even her?!

This Morning viewers were left seriously concerned as US singer Christina Aguilera appeared on the show on Tuesday. Christina, 44, joined Alison for a pre-recorded interview during the latest instalment of the show as Dermot O'Leary, 52, and Alison, 50, hosted the daytime hit. It comes as Burlesque arrives on the West End, 15 years after the iconic movie hit screens in 2010, with it marking Christina's film debut. Burlesque The Musical is now playing at the Savoy Theatre for a strictly limited season until 6 September 2025 following its sold-out run in Manchester. Genie In A Bottle hitmaker Christina wore an olive coloured corset-style bodice for her chat with Alison as she showed off her slim figure, while boasting a large bust. However, as the Birmingham native interviewed the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, fans watching at home were distracted by her appearance. Flooding social media with comments, they expressed some concern about her shrinking size. Posting on X, formerly Twitter, one viewer said: 'My God what has happened to Christina, is that even her?' A second harshly commented: 'State of Christina. Really sad to see... Britney is having a meltdown too.' 'Is Christina Aguilera ok? She doesn't look well,' asked a third worried fan. While a fourth remarked: 'She's wasting away.' Christina previously displayed her thin appearance and caused panic among fans, who discussed rumours she might have undergone plastic surgery on her face to achieve her transformed appearance. Her frame has also sparked rumours about whether may have turned to Ozempic-like drugs to bring about her drastic weight loss. Despite the speculation among fans that she may have altered her appearance in some way, the Grammy-winning singer–songwriter has not addressed the comments. She was previously rumoured to have had a breast augmentation after displaying a scar under her arm — which is a common place for the surgical incision — in 2010. In October of last year, multiple plastic surgeons who had not treated the songstress spoke to about her seemingly transformed appearance, suggesting that she may have undergone a face lift to sculpt her cheekbones and smooth the natural lines between her nose and lips. This Morning airs weekdays on ITV1 from 10am and is available to stream on ITVX.
