Another Jets QB calamity averted as Justin Fields suffers dislocated toe

Whatever good feelings and optimism the New York Jets and their fans might have had about their new era — with their new brain trust of Coach Aaron Glenn and General Manager Darren Mougey — were put to a severe test Thursday. On only the second day of training camp, quarterback Justin Fields left the practice field riding in a cart after suffering a toe injury on his right foot while participating in a drill. The Jets signed Fields in March to replace Aaron Rodgers after Glenn and Mougey informed Rodgers that his disappointing, injury-marred stay with the franchise would end after two seasons. What a truly Jets-esque beginning to a new era, right? Perhaps not. The Jets said later it was determined after medical evaluation that Fields suffered a dislocated toe. His playing status will be listed as day-to-day, the team said, adding Fields 'avoided serious injury and significant missed time.' Another quarterback calamity may have been averted. Barring another setback, Fields presumably will be in the lineup for their Sept. 7 season opener against, fittingly, Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Meadowlands. 'I don't know the severity of the injury,' Glenn said at an earlier news conference, just after Thursday's practice. 'But I do know it's a toe on his right side. And, listen, we have an outstanding backup in Tyrod [Taylor], who's been in this league for around 14 years. So the leadership that he brings, listen, we're all good.' Glenn spoke at some length about his level of confidence in Taylor. 'If anything does happen to Justin, I don't think there's any drop-off as far as what we're going to do when it comes to play-calling,' Glenn said. 'Very similar when you talk about skill sets. So that was, like, enticing for us. And the leadership ability, things that we heard about him. I played against him before. And you can just tell the players really gravitate to him. When he says something, everybody really listens, even the coaching staff. He's been around this league a long time. He knows what it takes to win.' It's generally not a good sign when a coach professes his faith in the backup QB on Day 2 of training camp. And all of this came against the backdrop of the Jets' lucklessness and extended lack of on-field prosperity. Their 14-season drought without a playoff appearance is the longest current streak among all teams in the NFL, NBA, WNBA, NHL and MLB. The Jets have not made the postseason since the 2010 season, when they reached their second straight AFC championship game with Rex Ryan as their coach and Mark Sanchez as their quarterback. They've had nine straight losing seasons. And when hopes were raised with their blockbuster trade for Rodgers in 2023, the four-time MVP promptly suffered a torn Achilles' tendon on his left leg four offensive snaps into his debut. Before becoming a top coaching candidate with his work as defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions, Glenn played eight seasons as a cornerback for the Jets and was selected to two Pro Bowls while with the team. He played for legendary coach Bill Parcells. He knows the issues and the angst involved. 'I've been there and done that,' Glenn said Thursday. 'And again, I just talked about what we did in Detroit. It becomes a mentality, for the most part. The thing that I have to do is to make sure that I can transition that mentality to everybody else. And I understand how this league is. I understand how social media starts to take over and everybody starts to panic. One thing I would say is we have a number of men in that locker room that wants to win. And we have a number of men in that locker room learning how to win. It's my job to make sure I push that over the edge. And that's my plan.' The Jets just signed wide receiver Garrett Wilson and cornerback Sauce Gardner to four-year contract extensions worth $130 million for Wilson and $120.4 million for Gardner. They are the foundational players of the Jets' rebuilding efforts. The Jets can only hope Fields can be added to that category after being signed in March to a two-year, $40 million deal. He played well in helping the Steelers to a 4-2 start last season before being benched by Coach Mike Tomlin in favor of Russell Wilson. Before that, Fields had an uneven three seasons with the Chicago Bears after being selected 11th overall in the 2021 NFL draft. A toe injury on the right foot of a right-handed quarterback could hinder his passing motion, given that it's his plant foot while throwing. And Fields is a quarterback who utilizes his mobility. So Thursday's injury initially was rather ominous. But maybe, just maybe all will be fine. Now, wouldn't that be a sign that times indeed have changed? 'I understand the outside noise,' Glenn said. 'I understand [what] the fans go through. I understand what you guys [reporters] go through. But it's really early. We have a lot of time. So we're going to focus on that.'

On top of Rodgers claiming that 2025 is his final season in the NFL, he has the pressure of performing one final time to help lead the Steelers back to the playoffs. More news: Jets' Justin Fields Given Official Injury Status, Return Timeline Rodgers is a consummate pro, despite the controversies that surround him every offseason. Despite still being heralded as one of the best quarterbacks int he league, his age is a thing that many people worry about. That said, it appears Rodgers' start with the Steelers in training camp is off to a rough start. During 11-on-11 team drills, the 41-year-old signal caller threw his first pass out, which was intercepted. The training camp mistake brought in plenty of reactions from fans. Still, throwing an interception is something that fans are going to be all over when it comes to Rodgers. Rodgers left the Green Bay Packers after the team chose to draft Jordan Love, leaving the veteran with no choice but to pursue another team. He was shockingly traded to the Jets in 2023 and was ready to begin the twilight years of his career. Rodgers stated he would return to the team if they made the playoffs, but that wasn't the case. He would return in 2024, but the Jets still ended the season with a paltry 5-12 record. Rodgers managed to throw 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions behind a shaky Jets offensive line. He may be up there in age for the NFL, but stats still prove he can win games. Now, Rodgers gets a chance to lead a revamped Steelers offense that includes the aforementioned Metcalf and young upstart running back Jaylen Warren. The Steelers also traded for tight end Jonnu Smith, who joined the team from the Miami Dolphins. Though training camp is the time in which quarterbacks and players can make mistakes, Rodgers needs to provide more than turnovers; otherwise, the team might look to Mason Rudolph or Will Howard to start in the regular season. Jets QB Justin Fields suffers dislocated toe in his right foot during Thursday's practice

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields suffered a dislocated toe in his right foot during Thursday's practice, the team announced. Fields is considered "day-to-day" and, according to the Jets, "avoided serious injury and significant missed time." Fields threw an incompletion, then sat down and stood up before limping off the field. Trainers were seen removing his right cleat to work on his foot. He was then carted off to the locker room to be examined. The team then ended what they were doing in practice and began working on special teams. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters he believed Fields had his foot stepped on. Tests showed no fracture, only the dislocation, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Jets are hoping Fields will be ready for Week 1. Fields is in his first season with the Jets after signing a two-year, $40 million contract in the offseason after spending 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tyrod Taylor is the Jets' backup quarterback. When asked about the veteran signal caller potentially being needed to play, Glenn said, "I don't think there's any drop off as far as what we want to do when it comes to play calling." Fields making an impression early on Prior to his time in Pittsburgh, Fields played three seasons in Chicago after the Bears selected him with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Bears traded Fields to the Steelers in 2024 after obtaining the No. 1 pick in the draft to select Caleb Williams. Fields then split time in Pittsburgh with Russell Wilson. He started Pittsburgh's first six games after Wilson suffered a calf injury in training camp before Wilson took over at quarterback for the rest of the season. In 10 appearances, including his six starts, Fields completed 65.8% of his passes last season for 1,106 yards on 6.9 yards per attempt with five touchdowns and one interception. He ran for 289 yards on 4.7 yards per carry with five rushing touchdowns. The Steelers were 4-2 in games he started, but moved on to Wilson once he was healthy. During offseason work, Fields has impressed Sauce Gardner, to the point that the two-time All-Pro cornerback said Fields has been making throws on the level of the quarterback he is replacing. "There's only a certain amount of quarterbacks that can make [certain throws]," Gardner said earlier this month via "The Pat McAfee Show." "I'm talking about throws on, like, Aaron [Rodgers'] type of level. When it comes to being able to squeeze those throws in there, I always thought Aaron was the best when it came to that. And it's like Justin had made a few throws where I'm like, 'OK, he really been in the lab, for real.' I could just tell." Fields and the Jets won't have to wait long to see Rodgers and his new team, the Steelers. New York and Pittsburgh will meet in Week 1.
