'One of Them Days' Is Officially Getting a Sequel

Elle05-06-2025
We're about to have another One of Them Days.
The Issa Rae-produced hit comedy, starring Keke Palmer and SZA, is officially set to return for a sequel. Written by Syreeta Singleton and directed by Lawrence Lamont, the original film followed besties and roommates Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) over a single day in Los Angeles as they scramble to make their rent money before they get evicted. It went on to become one of the most successful original films released this year, grossing over $50 million worldwide. 'It was such a scary thing because I wanted a number one movie,' Rae told the Washington Post in January. 'I wanted it to be successful and simultaneously show that, box-office-wise, there was a demand for this.'
Below is everything we know about the forthcoming sequel.
Yes! According to Variety, a sequel to One of Them Days is in the works. The film is currently in early development at TriStar Pictures.
Palmer and SZA will return as best friends Dreux and Alyssa, respectively. The original creative team will also be coming back. There's no word yet on whether the supporting cast (which includes Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Maude Apatow, Janelle James, Katt Williams, Lil Rel Howery, Joshua Neal, Aziza Scott, Patrick Cage, Dewayne Perkins, Amin Joseph, Gabrielle Dennis, and DomiNque Perry) will be returning, too.
While the plot for the sequel is still being kept under wraps, that won't stop us from hypothesizing. One of Them Days ended with Dreux getting an offer for her dream job and Alyssa successfully putting on her first art show. (Oh, and they did end up making back their rent money. That is, before a fire burned down their apartment.) The sequel might follow them in their new lives as self-assured career women, who undoubtedly get involved in even more hijinks.
It's currently streaming on Netflix.
This story will be updated.

Why [Spoiler] Probably Doesn't Survive That Shooting on 'The Gilded Age'

Spoilers below. Someone check on George Russell! Last night's episode of The Gilded Age ended with a nail-biting cliffhanger when the railroad tycoon appeared to be shot in a surprise assassination attempt. A gunman posing as a messenger stepped into George's office, where he was gathered with a few colleagues, with a 'delivery for Mr. Russell.' He takes out a gun and shoots one of the men and then points the gun at George and fires. The bullet bursts out of the barrel in slow motion. The episode ends before we can see whether George was actually shot—and if he survives—but we do know the bullet was intended for him. Is there a chance the Russell patriarch miraculously makes it out alive? Morgan Spector, who stars as George on the HBO series, says don't get your hopes up. 'You should be very worried,' he told Variety. 'In the 19th century, gunshot wounds from up close were extremely dangerous. Many people didn't survive them. I don't have a contract for next season yet, so who knows?' Of course, there's a chance he could be bluffing, so we'll have to wait until the finale next Sunday to find out about George's fate. Despite the tragic turn of events, Spector said he was excited to portray this shocking storyline in the show. When he read the scripts, he told Variety, 'I was just thrilled, because it's such a left turn for our show. It's totally historically accurate—this kind of thing happened during that era. But it doesn't feel like The Gilded Age.' Spector added that he sees parallels between the show and the present day. He first read the shooting scene in scripts shortly after a real-life high profile shooting took place in present day: when Luigi Mangione allegedly assassinated the CEO of United Healthcare, Brian Thompson, in New York City. 'I was like, [The Gilded Age creator] Julian Fellowes is clairvoyant,' he added in his interview with Variety. 'It redoubled my sense that there's a way that this show, however subtly, however quietly, is really in dialogue with our current moment, simply by virtue of there being structural similarities between the two eras. Both of these time periods have massive wealth and massive inequality. Both of them are characterized by industrial titans, who are kind of swinging the state around by its tail. The consequences of that can be violence.' The actor was likely referring to George's scheme to expand his railroad business. After his son, Larry, finds valuable copper mines on their land in Arizona, George has enough funds to gain control of the Illinois Central Line. He doesn't do this humbly. At the business meeting where he announces this acquisition, he scolds his former secretary, Clay, for overlooking the copper mines and for working with the enemy. Clay's new boss, who is also turned off by his oversight, fires him. Clay then warns George that he's like a cockroach—he won't get rid of him easily. So in the wake of the shooting, Clay sure seems like he may have organized the hit, but we won't know for sure until the finale airs. After all, someone as powerful as George Russell might have a lot of people who want to see him dead. When asked by Variety whether George's ambition was also the cause for his 'undoing' this season, Spector said yes. 'His by-any-means-necessary drive has succeeded so many times, but that formula isn't always going to work,' Spector said. 'He probably should have paused on the railroad expansion, but I also think he was distracted. His marriage is not going well. His relationship with his daughter is not going well. He's kind of a mess in this episode. He's wagered more than he should have. There's a lot of internal disappointment at the way he's failed Gladys. There's a lot of internal disappointment over his own stupidity in terms of risking more than they have.' There are layers of tragic irony that make George's possible death even more heartbreaking. He and his wife, Bertha (Carrie Coon), didn't leave things on good terms after he pushed her away and blamed her for meddling with their son's marriage plans (even though she didn't.) Plus, his daughter Gladys (Taissa Farmiga), who married an English duke against her will, is headed back to the states with her husband to reunite with the family in Newport. How will they and Larry (Harry Richardson) react when they learn what's happened to George? The answer lies in next week's must-watch finale.

Song Young-kyu, South Korean movie and TV star, found dead at 55: Reports

Song Young-kyu, a South Korean actor best known for his role as Chief Choi in 2019's South Korean box office hit "Extreme Job," has reportedly died. He was 55. An acquaintance found Young-kyu unresponsive inside a parked car the morning of Aug. 4, Variety and South Korean publication Yonhap News report. South Korean authorities do not suspect foul play and no suicide note was found, according to the outlets. Young-kyu, who was found south of Seoul in the city of Yongin, had recently been the subject of scandal when he was caught in a drunk driving incident in the same city in June, Deadline and Variety reported. The incident led to his removal from several mid-project stage and television productions. A staple in South Korean cinema, Young-kyu made his acting debut in 1994, launching a robust career that spanned both film and TV. Appearing in popular series like 2022's "Narco-Saints," a popular Korean Netflix original series, and Disney+'s "Big Bet," he was a reliable supporting actor, bringing both experience and consistency. Young-kyu was best known, though, for his role as Chief Choi in the action-comedy blockbuster "Extreme Job." In it, he appears as the head of a detective squad investigating narcotics on the low and running a fried chicken restaurant as a front. He appeared in the film alongside actors Ryu Seung-ryong, Lee Hanee and Jin Seon-kyu. It was a major box office success in the country and introduced a wider set of audiences to Youn-kyu's steady and masterful onscreen presence.

Tom Holland Breaks Silence On James Bond Rumours With Intriguing Comments

There's been an interesting development in the ongoing speculation about who the next actor to play James Bond will be. For the past year, it's looked like Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been the frontrunner to land the role of 007, following Daniel Craig's departure from the franchise at the end of No Time To Die. Aaron himself hasn't exactly always (or, indeed, ever) been keen to talk about the rumours, but his name has repeatedly come up in press reports about which star will be cast as Bond next. However, back in June, Variety published a piece citing 'insiders' who claimed that the team behind the iconic spy franchise is looking to cast a 'British actor under the age of 30', in the hopes of showing a new side to the character, throwing doubt on Aaron's casting for the first time (as well as that of other rumoured contenders like Henry Cavill, Regé-Jean Page and Aaron Pierre). Variety's article specifically mentioned three names, Jacob Elordi (who, of course, is Australian, but that's seemingly not an issue), Harris Dickinson (who is now probably best known for his role opposite Nicole Kidman in the erotic thriller Babygirl) and Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland. Tom has now spoken out about the rumours for the first time, and he's not exactly issued a denial. During a conversation on, of all places, Gordon Ramsay's YouTube channel, Tom was asked about the Bond rumours, to which he responded: 'Listen, there's speculation at the moment. We'll keep it to a minimum for now. We will get there one day.' 'Every young British actor [would love the opportunity],' he continued. 'It's the pinnacle of working in our industry. 'I already consider myself to be the luckiest kid alive. I could never have dreamed [of having] the career that I have.' Tom is currently shooting the latest Spider-Man movie, while Variety's article suggested fans shouldn't expect to see the next Bond film until around 2028. Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve will helm the next instalment in the James Bond series, once he's completed work on the third Dune movie, which is about to go into production. The writer of the next 007 film was also announced last week, and it's exciting news for fans of prestige British drama.
